... if sending unsolicited e-mail (sending to an address that didn't have you on their contact sheet) cost a small micro-payment, it would quickly offset any profits to be made from spamming on the scale described in the article...
This is a good idea... sort of...
As long as sending SPAM is cheaper than sending junk snail mail, there will be SPAM. This is where this idea starts getting interesting... charging more than (or the same amount as) it would cost to send out a flyer via the postal service. This is when you'd see a HUGE decrease in SPAM. Only when it requires a legitimate investment to advertise and it costs about as much as other advertising medium will SPAM cease to suck up terrabytes of disk space (and bandwidth) on mail servers.
1) You'll go over there to work, if you're good looking enough, hook up with one of these babes, and then loose 50% of your money when you return to the US when your wife divorses your ass for giving her crabs
2) Go over there to work, work your ass off to keep the job, and then return to the US (depressed) when the job is finished because you were constantly shot down by all of the gorgeous women because they already have some European stud that they've hooked up with.
... but atleast you'd be getting paid, but definately not laid.
My company used to use Road Runner for all local (office) traffic. We had 10 PCs connected tot he same line, with 5 or more using going at one time, downloading all sorts of large files, constantly. We never received any type of warning like you suggested, and we did this for years. Maybe we just got lucky, but I am concerned since I still have RR at home. Obviously, I'm not downloading MP3s at home, but I'm still pulling tons of large files off of my company's co-located servers (on a OC-3 line), and at times, I have 6 or 7 people doing this at once.
What state are you doing this in (hopefully not Ohio)? Was you machine hacked when this happened? Did you have an open FTP server?
I've never heard of this happening to anyone that I know, which is why I am hoping that you'll provide a little more detail as to how this happened to you. I just hope this doesn't happen to me... I can live without TV, but not without Road Runner!!!!

The majority of spam has HTML that can trace you. I obviously don't know the content of your mail box, but by doing this, I have a 90% uccess rate now (from about 70% or so).
Torvalds probably sleeps a lot more soundly that Gates
Although I wish this was true (since I think Gates should sleep on a bed of nails), I doubt this is true. Gates has a TON more money than Linus, and can thus, can afford to buy a better (sound proof) place to sleep. If he didn't have a sound proof house, he'd be up all night, listening to the splatter of all the eggs that hit his house each night!!!
Was changing the name of the free version of RedHat to Fedora really neccessary?
Personally, I think they should have left the name alone and just allowed outside programmers to work on it.
Even from an enterprise point of view, the more people an executive sees using RedHat, the more comfortable s/he'll be to use it in their shop.
This will be the death of RedHat.
Just like everyone else, RedHat is selling out. First, it was Napster selling out... now RedHat.
They use people to get their name out and develop a community of loyal users, and then strip their name away from the community inorder to make a buck!
I'm switching to {fill in another flavor of Linux}!!!
They are using the identity of what used to represent freedom from the RIAA to make money, and basically, supporting the RIAA!!!
This is a disgrace!
I know that the musicians have a right to make moeny (although I still think it is a crock how the RIAA has blackmailed everyone and even more so how the musicians have basically turned their backs on their fans), but using the Napster name to support the RIAA is NOT RIGHT!!!
Hell, just on the fact that Napster has also sold out to the RIAA would be enough for me to NEVER visit their site. As it is, I am (as I am sure many others are) boycotting music by not purchasing CDs or subscribing to any pay-for music site. The people need to speak out by boycotting this kind of thing.
In addition, (if I was buying CDs) now you have to pay to download music, whether or not you have purchased the CD! (If you want to have the music "legally") That is also a crock!
Don't support the sellous at Napster!
Don't use their service!!!
Don't support the RIAA!!!
Let those music producers go out of business and starve! If you want to support your bands, go to their live shows, but don't allow the RIAA to exploit people with these insane rules on music. Yes, the artists deserve to make a good living, but these kind of costs provide MUCH more than a good living. Force the music execs to take a pay cut... and have the artists living in semi-luxuray instead of in their plush castles!
It just frosts me that the folks at Napster, the people that are supposed to represent what is good in music, are now selling out to the evil RIAA! I would rather have the name go down (as a marter) than to sell out like this!
And to the people at Napster: Please stop with all of the annoying TV commericals!
So what happens... when the same kid gets into 11th grade and their teacher tells them to type their paper (using MS Word 2006 that only runs on Windows RG) in class and email it to her.... when Joe Student raises his/her hand and tells the teacher that:
- My screen isn't working
- My wireless card broke 2 years ago
- I'm missing the '@' key
- My laptop won't run Windows RG (Really Good edition)
-.... etc....
Are they going to expect kids to repair or replace these laptops?
Has ANYONE thought of this?????
Nice idea, but it could be expensive to the student in the long run.....
Comedy relief
When the 6th grade student asks his 11th grade brother what school was like when he was his age, he replies:
"We had to type our papers, AT HOME, on a PC with a TUBE monitor. And we couldn't take the PC with us, we used CDs and disks to transfer information. And we usually used the same PC... in the SAME PLACE since we couldn't walk around with our computer... "
Did you read his resume???
He has been working since 1967 (for NASA) and had a job up through this year (2003).
If I'm doing the math correctly, he's been working for 36 years!!!! He also has a master's degree, so it is hard to say if he was working while he got that or if he stayed in school during that time, which should place him at about 58 - 60 years old!!!!
He had some NICE jobs, so there had to have been SOME money that could have been saved. And after 36 years, and by the article, it sounds like he has his house paid off....
Unfortunately, this sounds like typical American downsizing... and that due to his age. However, he should be able to begin to collect social security and (hopefully) find a much more stress free job (working at the local super market)... which should be enough to get by on... and should still provide him with LOTS of time to do all of the things he mentioned in the article.
During this kind of economy, retirement might actually be the better option.... (again, depending on his actual age... I'm only speculating as to what I think his age MIGHT be)
Just some food for thought...
Now for the younger people, I have no idea what to say... but I've been there, and done that... and it sucks!
That was a great arguement and accounting of how the Internet has gone from a great, fun place to surf and express yourself... to what it is today... a cut-throat place where people are fighting for advertisement dollars that aren't enough to even pay for bandwidth bills (and where people go to bitch about how sites they used to visit aren't free anymore)...
Honestly, like many others, I feel your pain. My company was dropped by several advertisers because of our WWII game (there are many people that are still understandibly offended by Nazi's).
However, we've managed to keep our site free thus far. We had the same delema that you had, and we decided that we weren't caving in unless we were absolutely forced to....
Unfortunately, the games don't make much money... and we're splitting that money five ways, which doesn't help.... but we do give our players the option of purchasing a banner free account... which pays slightly more than the banners do, but is far less annoying that seeing casino ads all over the screen each time you click on something...
Personally, I hate ads, especially REALLY annoying ads that play music, shake, or pop-up, but that is what we have to do to survive....
However, unlike many sites, we give our people the choice of seeing the ads in lieu of veiwing the ads... so the poeple can decide if the site is worth visiting with ads or if it is worth paying for the content....
It isn't a perfect solution, but it seems to be working well. Our player base has dropped by about 10% because of some of the obnoxious banners, but that isn't too bad.... most of the people that are really bothered by them pay us to take them away...
However, we are now posed with a very interesting issue as we prepare to venture into the world of fantasy sports... where I have seen first hand that people will NOT tolorate pop-up ads.... It will be interesting to see how this pans out
'Considering that the Web as a whole will have about 4 trillion page views this year, the [low-traffic] sites might seem irrelevant with their pitiful millions of page views. But within their niche they dominate.'
I currently run a couple of free online games, http://www.coldfirestudios.com (*cheap plug*). I currently receive about 300,000,000 page views per year on a total of 3 games. That isn't too bad..... but it definately isn't a "large" site....
I have been told that our Space and WWII game are some of the most detailed games of their genre, yet the games barely support themselves with the banner ads we place on the site...
... which leads me to this question: HOW IS THIS DOMINATING?????
I suppose this is better than the fate of many other smaller web sites, but give me a break! Over the past 5 years, I have seen my competition come and go.... but no one is "dominating"... they are surviving!!!
Who ever came up with this idea that smaller web sites will dominate is on crack! It has been proven over and over that only web sites that utilize economies of scale can survive on the net these days... because most advertisers want CHEAP advertising that MANY people will see over and over.... you don't get either of those with targeted advertising on small web sites!!!
Mod this down (or even troll it), but this has been my experience......
Advertisers (people that can still afford advertising) want to reach the masses, which means you need thousands (or millions) of unique visitors daily....
Look at their homepage....
It is kinda funny that they use jpegs instead of their own gifs!!!!
If I was making royalties in the degree they are from a patent like the.GIF patent... I would make sure that I promoted my money maker by actually using it myself...
Yes, I know that a gif for those images would be larger than a jpeg.... but it just seems crooked that the people that rape everyone else for using gif's get to use jpegs at no cost to them!!!
-- Just my $0.02 cents...
First, remember that you are only young once... and once it is gone, it is gone! Go play basketball, football, and/or baseball while your body will still allow you to do this!... and while you're at it, get laid while you can still get a girl that hasn't had time to learn what good sex is yet! (Not to be mean, but it doesn't sound like you have much experience in this department)
... then after you blow out you knee / ruin your back / tear a muscle / etc.... playing sports, then you can retire to playing with computers....
But if you MUST play games now, go to a LAN party, like most other people do.... or just play them from home periodically. Why in God's name would you want to start a club that is going to guarentee a good ass beating everyday for you and your proposed club associates?
I have a LAN party every other month, and there are MANY athletes that show up to these events, but even a "jock" is going to pick on or beat up the computer club geeks on a regular basis.
Don't get me wrong, computers are great things... but their not worth ruining your social life during a ppoint in your life that you should be enjoying (not healing after your weekly ass kicking). People are cruel and are quick to label and stereo-type people.... it is ok to do what you like, but don't do things that are going to take any little bit of "coolness" out of what you enjoy and get you labeled a looser.
In a couple years, there will be MANY more people doing what you want to do now, but while you are in high school, this probably won't go over too well. Wait until you are in college to do something like this.... but don't tell the people in your dorm that you do this... otherwise you'll miss out on all of the 18-20 yr old ass!!!

This page is parked FREE at Go Daddy!
Man, they must be serious.... they have their domain name registered!!!

... further, we know which ISP to forward our leftover spam to:)
Everyone should contact Go Daddy and protest them hosting this site and aiding terrorists (well, they terrorize my mail box every day!!!)
You better watch out emarketers.... just wait until "W" finds out about your group of organized crime!!!

Turn the ships around, we have a serious battle to fight on the home front. Homeland security is now at red.... time to bomb the emarketers convention, while we have all of them in one place

If you want ROI, don't buy from HP!
... during the 90's, people bought lots of over priced hardware, and now they're on to that scheme ... what do we do next?
.. let's eat.
They're too pricey to begin with!
Here is what I imagine an HP executive meeting would be like (using Nextel phones):
Exec #1 : Hmmmm
Exec #2 : Let's sell over priced serives instead
Exec #3 : The over priced products will promise more real-time services and a grear ROI
Senior Exec : Great idea! Pursue the new serivce scheme, pronto
