Replace Cisco with Microsoft/IBM/Intel and Extreme with Linux/HP/AMD

Doesn't change the point that there are MANY IT shops out there (some quite large) that will only accept Cisco equipment.
Many vendors get around some of the issues by implementing the Cisco CLI - making management of siad devices easier, they are managed just like all of the other cisco devices in their shop.

This is just a reality if you are an equipment vendor - might as well recognise it and move on

    2) BS doesn't have the ability to take vesting into account. Don't know about you - but all of the options I have been granted vest between 1 and 5 years in the future. I would have no way of knowing if I will still be employed by the company on these dates.

So it boils down to - either don't expense options, OR allow the board of directors to pick a random number out of the air and declare the value of an option to be that number.

Frankly - I would much rather see companies go closer to cash accounting - when I am looking at the financials of a company, I don't even look at their P&L statements - too easy to cover up mismanagement there. I look at the cashflow - are they depositing money into the bank on a quarterly basis and if so - how much.

There is software that provides these kinds of guarantees... Problem is the guarantee is almost worthless.

Lets first talk about supported hardware configurations.

Before I would allow certain liabilities like this, I would require a given supported configuration. Lets say something like a Pentium 4 processor running at 3Ghz - without HyperThreading, A Chipset, a single graphics card (make it old too), a single hard disk from one manufacturer - the list goes on (well in reality - the list doesn't go on). Your hardware isn't in the supported configuration (You did buy directly from Dell didn't you ?) forget the support, it isn't a tested and qualified system.

    Software configuration

You weren't going to install ANY other software on your system, other than mine... How do I know that THAT software didn't cause the problem - so nix any software purchases - or that will void the warantee as well.

So basically you end up with a supported system, that is completely useless. Not much fun at all. And you WANT to have this happen by getting lawyers involved ?

Now it is dilutive to the current shareholders - but that is simple math, and in fact is not covered in the accounting (ie. If you were the only shareholder of a company - and you gave yourself 10M more shares - What did it cost your company)

Security is a range, it isn't a switch. If maximum compute power is of upmost important to you - go ahead, turn off all your virus scanners, personal firewalls, etc. . However, if you need security - turn those services on, monitor their compliance, and take the overhead that it requires.
