Replace Cisco with Microsoft/IBM/Intel and Extreme with Linux/HP/AMD
Doesn't change the point that there are MANY IT shops out there (some quite large) that will only accept Cisco equipment.
Many vendors get around some of the issues by implementing the Cisco CLI - making management of siad devices easier, they are managed just like all of the other cisco devices in their shop.
This is just a reality if you are an equipment vendor - might as well recognise it and move on
I know of several IT shops that will not allow non Cisco equipment into their infrastructure. Would make it hard (if not impossible) to qualify for those accounts.
That said - what kind of customization are you looking for... Cisco is the gold standard on most things IP infrastructure these days.
Limitations on B-S option pricing.
1) BS breaks down VERY rapidly as the length of the option term goes up. My understanding is that the use of BS is worthless beyond 2 years. Don't know about you but my options are granted for a period between 8-10 years.
2) BS doesn't have the ability to take vesting into account. Don't know about you - but all of the options I have been granted vest between 1 and 5 years in the future. I would have no way of knowing if I will still be employed by the company on these dates.
So it boils down to - either don't expense options, OR allow the board of directors to pick a random number out of the air and declare the value of an option to be that number.
Frankly - I would much rather see companies go closer to cash accounting - when I am looking at the financials of a company, I don't even look at their P&L statements - too easy to cover up mismanagement there. I look at the cashflow - are they depositing money into the bank on a quarterly basis and if so - how much.
There is software that provides these kinds of guarantees... Problem is the guarantee is almost worthless.
Lets first talk about supported hardware configurations.
Before I would allow certain liabilities like this, I would require a given supported configuration. Lets say something like a Pentium 4 processor running at 3Ghz - without HyperThreading, A Chipset, a single graphics card (make it old too), a single hard disk from one manufacturer - the list goes on (well in reality - the list doesn't go on). Your hardware isn't in the supported configuration (You did buy directly from Dell didn't you ?) forget the support, it isn't a tested and qualified system.
Software configuration
You weren't going to install ANY other software on your system, other than mine... How do I know that THAT software didn't cause the problem - so nix any software purchases - or that will void the warantee as well.
So basically you end up with a supported system, that is completely useless. Not much fun at all. And you WANT to have this happen by getting lawyers involved ?
What is the expense of the option to the company ??? - After all, all it costs to issue a share of stock is the CFOs signature.
And just for fun - it is a cash positive transaction for the company (The employee pays cash to get the shares of stock)
Now it is dilutive to the current shareholders - but that is simple math, and in fact is not covered in the accounting (ie. If you were the only shareholder of a company - and you gave yourself 10M more shares - What did it cost your company)
Rather than paying for fancy furniture, perks, and all of that - create an OA5 organization (See The Dilbert Principle) and spend the money somewhere else (like maybe more developers)
Gigaethernet enough or should we be going for Fiber
Well quit mixing your media here. What do you mean GbE is enough, it runs over both copper and fiber. Now there are other layer 2 protocols that run over both copper and fiber (all though different cables) for example - what SAN are you going to use ? iSCSI, FC, SRP, NFS ?
What networking are you going to use ? GbE, TokenRing, FDDI, ???
What HPC/Interconnect are you going to use Infiniband, Myrinet, VI, ???
Some of these are the same networks, some of these are not, they all run at various speeds with various types of cabling. Now go ask your question again
PS GbE is probably good for networking, probably not for your SAN
Of course if I were to RTFA - and more importantly UTFA (Understand the Article) I wouldn't be able to post this for another 2 years or so...
As it is, it looks like he proposed this solution over a year ago and has been getting it vetted in a tightly controlled community. Now that the cat is out of the bag he will have to get it into a peer reviewed journal (takes 6 months or so) and wait 2 years to see how it is bashed...
Yeah - that is about the time it would take for me to UTFA, except I am not a Mathemetician, so add in another 6-8 years to get that training as well. So I will get back to you sometime around 2120 with an insightful comment after UTFA
It's not the "open internet" that you'd like to see. Live within the limitations this simple, dumb network provides.
Anyone else remember the days 20 years ago when it was considered rude to not allow relay through your SMTP server in case someone needed to bounce mail from your network.
I am running Fedora Core 2 on a dual opteron Tyan motherboard. I have a 80Gig SATA drive that works fine right out of the box (FC 1 didn't see it though, in fact FC 2Test 3 didn't either)
Ok - only once a week or so, but it is quite nice. Consider it takes me just over an hour to bike it, and a 1/2 hour to drive (yes the roads are getting that bad in the bay area again). So it is only costing me about 45 minutes MAX to bike.
Well I get to save a trip to the gym that is at least 45 minutes, plus I get to look at the pelicans in the bay on my way to work rather than the idiot that didn't know how to merge this morning
41 employees... Ok that is normal for a startup, but 3 locations, illinios, washington, california ???
Now tell me what the competative advantage to having 3 sites with an average of 12 people in a location. I have never understood the advantage of building hugely distributed teams - I've worked in them... I have also worked on very localized teams (everyone on the same part of the same floor of the same building) - I have yet to see a distributed team that can match a localized team
Shouldn't be a problem if they say they have a degree from Ajax school of blundering idiots, and indeed they do have that degree from Ajax.
I would be much more concerned with individuals in government that claim to have degrees from the University of Texas (graduating with honors) when in fact they flunked out after their freshman year. ( I know this one happened when said in-duh-vidual came to speak at a commencement at my college and ended up getting exposed ).
The problem as I see it is that a lot of "automatic" extra money comes along with saying I have an additional degree - there needs to be limits on this "automatic" money, to include things like "from an accredited source". The government is just a bunch of idiots if they accept degrees from non-accredited sources
As a 2002 Prius owner I regularly get over 50 MPG over a weeks commute time. That said - when I put my bike on the back to drive to a ride, my gas milage plummets (added air resistance).
I also know that my average MPG plummets when I drive off of normal commute times where I am going 70-75 rather than 50-60.
Averages are averages, most people don't drive their cars anywhere near the conditions to get the rated MPG, but I am happy that I am around 50. It sure is nice going 500 miles to a tank of gas (I once wanted to try for 600 - but that seems like it is just pushing it)
Ok, does security have a priority at your company... Of course it does, doesn't it - No, I mean REALLY have a priority. Do you have a mandate to shut anything down that doesn't follow a certain policy, why isn't monitoring in that policy.
Security is a range, it isn't a switch. If maximum compute power is of upmost important to you - go ahead, turn off all your virus scanners, personal firewalls, etc. . However, if you need security - turn those services on, monitor their compliance, and take the overhead that it requires.
Scanning for security vulnerabilities at night won't do you any good if the PHB takes his laptop home w/ him, or joe user powers off his virus ridden PC every night before heading home. You must scan during the day (again, if that is important to your business).
What are the project priorities...
Follow the priority list and go from there.
If the priority is minimize development time, that might tell you one thing, if it is to maximize portability that might suggest another.
For example if you are a pure Oracle shop, have been for 10 years, would never port off of it - why should you care that your logic is implemented inside Oracle. If you are prototyping on a new database, and have no history with it (or any other product) you had better come up with a different answer
Active Driectory is like having a diesel car when everybody else has regular cars - you're stuck buying your diesel from the truck stop, where everybody else can fuel up where they'd like.
Ok - I'll have fun with this one (need some flamebait anyway) - yeah just like diesel, cheaper, fewer greenhouse gasses, better gas milage. Plus every gas station I go to has diesel available anyway.
To be slightly more fair, diesel also has a higher ammount of particulate that may be even worse on the environment than the greenhouse gasses, but who knows what will kill us first a 10.5 Earthquake Really Bad Movie, Global Warming Another stinker, or frankly all just dying from a random disease Ok, maybe not so bad

Q: What is the difference between a sendmail.conf file and modem noise

Yeah once every 6 months the new survivor gives out a million bucks... Lets boot this math geek off the island today.

God I hate spammers
Dual opteron just rocks
Good prior planning

Can't find it but PETA (I think) did a Mootrix take off as well as a video, was pretty funny on "farm raised" animals stuck in the Mootrix
