There was a great episode (though rather hard to follow) where Picard and the crew meet up with a civilization that speaks only in reference to historical events.
While I don't recal the specific dialog or incident, I do recall the general nature of the dialog - [name] on the river [name] - as a reference to two people overcoming their differences to triumph over a common enemy.
Quite a thought provoking episode which requried one to think beyond normal speech and understanding.
So basically the author says that MicroBSD is a great developing OS which is basically FreeBSD and OpenBSD somewhat combined with a few patches and a search and replace performed to put MicroBSD all over the place.
What a waste of an OS and a waste of an article. Why was this even posted on Slashdot?
The *BSDs and Linux (and related OSes) all fail basic usability - by which I mean my Mom can't configure them to just run darnit.
Sometimes the gentically inferior, but more brightly plumaged cock gets the chicks. When these OSes get better plumage the public may consider mating - er using - them.
That's a slightly (actually its a rather large) difference in scale and technologies you're talking about. And how would one upgrade the individual components?
It might be useful for handhelds and thin webpads though - still its rather limiting in that regard which will likely cause any experiments in this direction to remove themselves from the marketplace.
Now integration of common features which don't require upgrading (Firewire, USB1/USB2, Ethernet, 6 channel sound) is interesting and worthwhile, which is why the new southbridges all do some or all of this.
While diamonds may have a low resale value, that's not a critical point. Are you planning on selling this diamond any time soon? No.
If you're fortunate enough you may have a better option, see if your grandmother's (or great grandmother's) engagement ring is in the family and available. That's both sensible and heart-touching.
Don't add more digits, think of the poor military cadets who already have to learn the barcodes for Tobasco Brand Tobasco Sauce, JIF Creamy Peanut Butter, not to mention the chocolate sauce and the honey.
Sir, the barcode of the JIF Creamy Peanut Butter is as follows, thick bar thick bar thin bar...
I would have been much more pleased had the action sequence played out like one from Kung-Fu the Legend Continues. David Carradine's character mastered the art of being wise and skilled/strong without flying through the air and jumping over walls.
This "super Yoda" is fun to watch (if you can watch that fast) but it doesn't sit right with me as the same character who hobbles on a cane and eats porridge.
I've played my share of online games, from the simple telnets to the varied mmorpgs. Technological and admin based solutions never seems to adequately solve any real poroblem.
You can boot players, ban IPs, reprimand, close servers, but the miscreants always find a way back in, because its an enjoyable game to them... annoying others.
The only viable solution I've ever come across is the social stigma. This method of self-regulations fails if the game doesn't implement a system of reliance on other players though. As long as several players are needed to band together to achieve certain goals, social stigma works.
Picture a mmorpg where you need 3 other players to help you defeat a certain barrier. There's no other way, its part of the game structure. If you're a cheater, others won't help and you're limited in your game play. Where's the fun now?
Game builders have to be aware that cheaters exist and really strive to construct game play in such a manner where players can self-regulate like that. Admins and code-limitations never seem to solve the real problem.
D-Theater is an option (feature) on D-VHS tape decks. There are already decks on the market, especially in Japan, that are D-VHS but not D-Theater.
D-Theater is a content encryption system. D-VHS is a recording format (MPEG-2 aparently). A D-VHS recorder would allow you to record any HDTV broadcast directly - up to 4 hours of it in fact. Also, D-VHS supports full Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks at a bit rate of 576Kbps (higher than DVD's 448Kbps rate). This is being touted as the VHS for the HDTV generation.
Also, while the titles are listed at 35-40 USD Buy.com and BestBuy have them listed at 25-29 USD, so they aren't terribly more expensive than DVDs. Even so, DVDs have market edge on D-VHS (and a few other technological advantages including durability). It seems as if D-Theater is unimportant, but take notice of D-VHS.
The name of the television program eludes me at present, but it was an analysis of modern city planning. They looked at heat produced/reflected by buildings. They scanned a city, noticed an aluminum building with unusual properties, and then found a "dark zone" where there was little heat emitted. Looking at a map they realized it was a greentop building. Go figure.
But a building with a green top, that being trees, grasses, etc would help reduce ambient temperature caused by normal metallic/asphalt roofing materials. Furthermore rainwater falling on such a building could be used to at least flush toilets and water plants.
Additionally there are new solar cells being constructed that could easily be incorporated onto new construction to help it reduce / eliminate its need for an electrical power grid.
It doesn't seem that the authors are against progress or power grids, but they want to see more logic and thought go into creation processes. Rooftop gardens actually save the owners money over time (temperature regulation), but how often are they considered?
You could have just changed your TSO session's settings. Then you could have stared a lovely blue screen all day.
But don't pick the wrong terminal settings or you'll hose your machine and get a REAL blue screen - did that at work today, yikes!
It appears Hemos is using ViaVoice. I'm using it for this post as well.
Ahh, isn't technology grape.
And geeks the world over just got an ego boost because smaller IS better.
Thanks for the info - strangely enough, it re-aired tonight, and I'm watching it right now.

Watch out, according to the email inflammable liquids are flammable. Zoinks!

You can always Google for the history of GSM, as well as tons of resources on the spectrum and technologies behind GSM.

A slightly more well known source reports on the TI GSM chip.
Is this on Slashdot because its about spam?
Or because its about bad coders?
Or because its about a lack of/bad/imcompetent beta testing?
Or is it a CowboyNeal kind of thing?
Tool, why don't you know the name of the airship! Everyone knows the name of the airship. Even my mother knows its name.
Now if you'll excuse me I have to go put on my Jabba the Hut pajamas, watch Return of the Jedi for the 15th time this year, and wax my lightsaber.

At least that's what they always said in the movies.
