    Oops. I'm sorry. I had the temerity to criticize Stanford so somebody rightly modded my post as a troll. I'm so sorry. I'm sure that that person's moderation was completely fair.

    Let me reiterate succinctly: a PhD for studying a banal concept from a fictional teevee show is dumb if your background isn't sociology.

    I'm sorry, but I just had to reply to this.

    This is stupid. I can't believe that Stanford might give a PhD for this. Oh, wait a minute. That's right. It's Stanford. That means that as long as your parents can afford the obscene tuition you will get whatever degree they pay for.

    By the way, I live in Palo Alto right next to Stanford. I know these people. Did you know that the most upscale shopping center in Silicon Valley is almost on the Stanford campus? I went to UCSD and I didn't furnish my dorm from Crate & Barrel, and I didn't shop for clothes at Neiman Marcus or even Wilkes Bashford. I'm not bitter. I swear! :-)

    This could hurt G. Bush's oil profits! Therefore it'll never be available in the U.S. When will everyone learn? If it hurts investors it will not succeed in the U.S. It's as simple as that. This is a free market. There's a big demand for oil. Thank God there's nice companies willing to go out of their way and fulfill that demand. Maybe I should buy an S.U.V. I might really need to go 4-wheel-drivin' on Hwy. 101. Especially with all the potholes.

    Hi there. I'm a complete Tolkien fanatic. Can you name the seven sons of Fëanor? His mother? His father? His significance, even? I really wanted to like PJ's version of LOTR, but it was too fast. I can't really remember any one scene vividly from his movee. He tried to cram in all the action by sacrificing all the atmosphere. Hobbiton did look pretty, though. I don't think I'll bother with his version of The Two Towers. I'll just read it again instead.

    The only thing worse than PJ's LOTR is any recent Star Wars movie. :-)

    Oh, but the special effects were good, so I guess it's OK. Too bad about Tom B., though. BTW, I have nothing but respect for Christopher L.

    I don't know why people have trouble with this. This isn't about the GPL, or Stallman per se. It's about the fact that you can't develop for both the Linux kernel and a source code control system (e.g., CVS) at the same time without paying for BitKeeper.

    Obviously RMS has set himself up for flaming. People on any mailing list people tend to be very touchy about what they consider topical. :-) On the other hand, if you are a kernel developer using BitKeeper, then you can't work on CVS without paying money to BitKeeper.

    What about Baseball? Oops, they're on strike because millions-per-year ain't enough? Are you that much of a slave? Do you make millions per year? Can you even sit through a whole, boring baseball game? Tell the truth!

    That's what the man wants you to believe. :-) Seriously, last time I checked, the economy was in the toilet anyway. Mostly because the Bush administration doesn't have an economic policy at all, and has turned a budget surplus into a huge deficit.

    Then comes corporate greedheads to put the nail in the coffin of investor confidence. It's pretty plain to see why the economy is bad. Not because of 9/11, but be because of mismanagement both private and public. This is not partisan! This is just the truth.

    It's not like we peons can do anything about it, though. Don't forget that Bush II was appointed, not elected. I was kinda shocked by that. I don't think I'll ever vote again. It's pointless. The only thing I'm hoping for is that I can hold and job and not starve. Hmmm... Maybe I can marry a corporate greedhead, get security, and become part of the problem...

    Although food service can be rewarding it can also be very grueling. My grandfather ran restaurants and I worked in one of them for many years when I was growing up. The work is hard, the pay is low, and you're frequently surrounded by idiots. :-) I am much, much happier as an "office girl." I don't get burned, or end up smelling like grease, or get yelled at by tourists when I'm sitting behind a computer!

    ...it's an easy trap to fall into, and I've caught some really bright people with it.

    Which is why I think these types of interview questions are bad for a company. Would you reject someone because they didn't give the right answer? Then why are you wasting time asking it?

    Those kinds of questions are esoteric and contrived, and it doesn't tell you how adaptable someone is, or what their experiences have been. I've interviewed a number of people for senior development positions and I tend to be more interested in them talking than thinking about a riddle. I usually ask them to describe problems they've faced and how they solved them, instead of giving them artificial problems to solve on the fly.

    Usually I find that an interview goes very fast when I'm on this side of the table. I'm always pressed for time. I certainly don't want to waste it with riddles, I want to try to get to know someone, and really find out if they can contribute to my team.

    On the other hand, maybe I will use your question if we ever need to hire a riddle-solver. :-)

    Perforce is pretty nice. A couple of years ago I evaluated SCC systems because my company and I desperately wanted to get rid of Visual SourceUnsafe. We ended up choosing CVS. The two big things were cost and Perforce's lack of a Mac OS GUI interface. Seriously, this was a big issue. Try to get Mac or even Win people to use a command line. Ouch!

    Despite its limitations, CVS has served us very well for years now. We have many active developers on different projects in California and Ottowa and it's been great. Our whole company uses CVS now.

    There's a few features I wish CVS had, but simplicity and GPL are nice advantages, too.

    It's a frickin' story on a STAPLER.

    What's funny is that at first I would've agreed with you, but then I looked at that stapler site and got hooked. I saw the light. I realized that staplers are special. It's something intangible, the magic of mundane technology.

    Then something weird happened. I remembered that I had a stapler that my father gave me when I was little and it was old when he gave it to me. I looked for it in my apartment and sure enough I found it. According to the engraving it's a Bates 88P Hand-Grip Stapler. I think it's almost 40 years old--please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    It's one of the few things I've kept with me for a really long time. It works great and never jams. I spend a lot of time on a computer, but it's fun to use old technology, too.

    Isn't that bizarre? What is it with staplers, and not, say, hole punches or paper cutters? :-)

    Where do you live? It isn't like that here in California. My landlord must have my permission to enter unless it is 30 days after an eviction notice, and then the police have to be there too if I haven't cooperated.

    My God. I can't believe the fascist crap I'm reading here. Do some of you really think it's OK not to have privacy in rented property? Are you insane? Do you realize that most people in the USA rent housing? Could you afford the 1/2 million dollars it takes to purchase a three bedroom home were I live?

    My only hope for wealth and security is to win the lottery or marry a rich CEO before he's busted by the S.E.C. :-)

    Are you sure? I think I'd rather go without a hard drive than go barefoot all the time. I think I'd rank shoes higher. Have you ever walked around town barefoot? Watch that broken glass on the sidewalk! You can't go to restaurants either. "No shoes, no shirt, no service." :-)

    I got my last two computers from a local shop less than two miles from my apartment. They're called GamePC and they're great.

    They had a wide range of high-quality components so I could choose my own motherboard and case and stuff. They also burned it in for 48 hours and gave me a good warranty. I also got custom restore discs plus regular Windows CDs. They'll also install RedHat Linux if you want.

    My next computer will be from them also. They're not dirt cheap, but high-quality and I don't have to cut myself up trying to put together my own system. :-)

    I also like the idea of supporting a local small business.
