  1. Microsoft airline? on SpaceShipOne Captures the X Prize · · Score: 0

I wonder if Paul Allen put up the money so that Microsoft could start its own airline (spaceline!).

For no apparent reason, you'd have a Blue Sky of Death instead of a Blue Screen of Death and all passengers would perish instantly. Of course, all logs of the accident would be unrecoverable.

During the flight, you'd have to pay for extra upgrades such as seatbelts to stop you from being sucked out of the plane through the spontaneously appearing holes in the hull.

Linux and OSS friendly passengers would be considered as terrorists and shot on the spot once discovered.

  4. Hassled at Airport on US Expands Fingerprint and Mugshot Program for Visitors · · Score: 2, Interesting

I recently went to the US for a job interview. At immigration, they asked me to justify why I was staying for only two days. As soon as I mentioned I was here for a job interview, I was taken to the police center where a couple of ex-convicts without appropriate visas were also waiting.

I had to wait 30 mins for a police officer to take me to a small room for questioning! He was concerned that I might be working illegally and reminded me of the visa procedures.

As a british citizen, I have never dealt with the police and usually never get stopped for anything. This was a first for me. I felt accused, unwelcomed, rejected and insulted.

Also, the skilled worker H1B visa have run out this year, which means I can't start working until November earliest. This means that I'll probably look for a job elsewhere. In my opinion this is a loss to the US, since they should try to attract highly educated people like myself (in all modesty of course ;) ).

So yeah, Perens is right that patents are an enormous threat to developers right now. But the threat is certain to diminish greatly with time.

Sure patents may run out, but companies will just patent new stuff that's relevant at that time. And by the time the old patents expire, they'll probably be commercially useless anyway.

A TRIBUTE?!?! Who gives a rat's arse! I want a decent film, not a filmography fest.

Most asian KungFu movies suck grass. The characterization is comical and the fights are just plain stupid. I'm sorry to say this, but Hollywood usually does a better job (except of course Flying Dragon and Croutching shitbag).

  10. Kill Bill = Pedantic drivel on The Best and Worst Movies of 2003? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I watched Kill Bill with great anticipation but was thoroughly disappointed. I mean anyone who starts the credits with "Quentin's 4th Film"... WTF!?! I mean I like his movies but this was just a piss take. I didn't feel involved during the action scenes. We knew Uma would win from start and I didn't even notice most of the people she killed. Deja-vue to death. Then this all this slow-motion shite to make it 'super-emotional'. That coupled with supposedly 'cool' humour and - ohh my God!!? - REFERENCES TO OTHER FILMS... How soooophisticated.

Not only was I bored during 40% of the film, but I felt ripped off at the end because I only got half a film. I might download KB II but that's as far as I'll go.

I use to like Tarantino. But he's hot-headed and cliche-driven now.

At SIGGRAPH 2003 this year, we saw a demonstration by Masahiro Fujita, the head of Sony Intelligent Dynamics Laboratory, of this robot during the Android Dreams: The Present and Future of Autonomous Robotics session.

They showed it dancing (to its own music), flashing its lights, walking around and finding its way using dynamic path planning and environment sensing. It responded to an extensive voice vocabulary and mubbled some stuff in Japanese.

A PC was wirelessly to it linked showing some graphical and textual output from the robot. Anyway, that PC was running Unix, not sure if it was Linux. I guess the robot also ran a Unix-based OS.

IMHO it's just opportunism to tighten the noose by using the 9/11 excuse. People are still scared so it's quite easy to pass the laws and the government is scrambling while it can.

I seriously doubt monitoring the whole population will lead to anything conclusive. I mean, terrorists are not fools, they'll use covert method and encryption to communicate.

And anyway, anything called the Patriot Act would make me suspicious in the first place.
