I think the problem is that everyone is trying to cash in on non-cash alternatives.
Imagine if all fees went away, for both seller/buyer. Imagine there was a small little latch on your credit card that would allow payment, but would signal `anonymous' transaction (ie: it would show up as "CASH" in all statements, on both ends---and all other identifying records of it would be erased [by law] after 3 day clearing period).
Banks could still make money just by the fact of not having to deal with cash and armored cars.
Why is this such a big deal? Does Vista prevent 3rd party apps from opening files and reading contents? Or start/stop system services? I really don't see what the big deal is.
As for integrating 3rd party program into the `os search' feature, that's not MS's responsibility---Google isn't paying Microsoft's developers to make such integration possible.
note that the primary way of relating new work in computer science is through peer-reviewed conference proceedings
My experience with conferences has been that they're for-profit, and beyond that, don't really care for anything else; and the only reason most `researchers' don't care is 'cause their institution is paying for the thing, and the more you publish, the more important you appear (even if you publish obvious barely readable crap). Of course there are exceptions...
I don't understand why they don't just release "SP1" (and "SP2" a month later) just to silence folks who are `waiting for the service pack' before they upgrade. It's not like they -have- to wait until end of the year.
The laughable part is that in US, there's also a waiting list. Try to make an appointment for any `big' test, and you'll see there's a waiting line, sometimes of a few weeks---sure you can go elsewhere, but, eh, there's still a line... unless there's an emergency.
Maybe it's not as clear cut as `I'm on a waiting list'... but `My appointment is in four weeks.' is similar to `I'm on a waiting list for four weeks.'
Moore's films have very little to do with fact and more to do with his personal agenda.
So in other words, you think the healthcare system in the US is perfectly OK, and everyone has access (that is, there are no financial barriers) to the treatments they require?
shouldn't a -school- be running some sort of proxy, like websense? (I know it's a major pain in the neck, but, eh, it's a school... that's where such a thing would be appropriate).
I've tried to use git, and I feel like if you want to do anything more than commit, you have to jump off a cliff which has serious spikes at the bottom. seriously, if you want to learn how to do more than 1 or 2 of the simplest operations with it, you have to invest serious time. I tried, and never could get there.
It was hard to write...it should be hard to use...errr... this is Linus we're talking about, right?
Probably because Japanese written history only goes back about 2400 years and Chinese written history 3200 years....Yes... but combined, they cover 5600 years... which is a perfect fit for ID fact..errr..theory.
This is a very simple, formal test that any theory must pass in order to be considered a scientific theory.
Where does that leave String Theory?

...most of the terrorists are fighting closer to home to affect governments that have more direct interaction with them...
In other words, fight'em over there, so we wouldn't have to fight'em here? Hmm... Where have I heard that before?
What kind of good CIO has that kind of failure on his watch?

I don't understand why they have to do this though.
Wait till they become a patent troll...

My OS shouldn't be the second most expensive componenet of the entire system.
Err... I'd imagine that's precisely what Microsoft wants.

Not if you have any "pre-existing conditions."
:-)
Ah, but with those (and no insurance), you'll hit the poverty line pretty quickly, and become eligible for medicaid
It's interesting to note that they stopped growing as a corp once they started being very intrusive about their licensing.
How about "Skip bidding?"
Ironically, this already exists in stock markets (double auctions): Market Orders.
If you wanna bid, you do limit orders. If you want to skip bidding, you do market orders (to pay whatever price the other party wants).
This is a no-brainer---the fact that it's patentable is amazing.
The threshold for federal prosecution for copyright infringement is $2500.
But... who quantifies that? Is someone with an 80gig iPod carrying around -millions- of dollars of copyrighted material? By RIAA's definition... ?
I think it's the obsession with Mechs. Add a bullet proof hood, a large caliber gun, etc.

If only it went somewhere useful... like north pole.
4 million a day is... 1.46 billion. Hardly ``billions''.
How is that innovative? I've been able to do that on my blackberry for over 3 years now.
But but... it's not Apple!
Now, what if they cut out pagerank completely, would their search results still be just as good?

Ahh... Google... crapping on the little guy... just like any other corporation.
