I highly question people when they say this. I am a broke college student, paying my own way thru college and making payments on my mac. Yea it cost me 1700 for the new iMac and subwoofer but I personally think its worth every penny. I use to work for Best Buy. I laughed at the prices of PC's cause you never got what you paid for. With mac you are getting a robust machine, outstanding OS, friendly support and a computer that all your friends will oogle at when they see it. Only computer I have ever thought was too expensive was a BeBox. Wonderful machine but the price has gone up since BeOS users want a collectors item now.

As for people not complaining about this. Honestly I dont know but when I hear Apple is going to be driving people onto OSX I think its a good idea and it makes sense, where as when I hear about MS doing a simular thing, I get the idea its for money or something like that. When MS does it, it just doesnt sound like an advancment in the computer market. Apple is paving the way for bigger and better things and they want a level area to start with. OSX is a wonderful base and they are just going to get better from there. MS never did this, in my opinion.

Maybe I am just missing it but wouldnt things like this hurt Microsofts profits? I mean with money being tight everywhere, who is going to spring for a 1500 dollar computer when you can go to walmart and get one for 200. Last I checked most companies try to maximize profits. I am curious. Would love to hear ideas on why this is happening.

A CD key and heavy monitoring of thier online gaming servers. Granted they lose money to pirates but I am sure its far less than some of these companies with fancy cd's.

Regaurdless of how protection is done its a waste of time. Someone WILL crack it or get around it. If for nothing more than the challenge of breaking the encryption.

Personally I think the best way to stop pirating of software is to make it more affordable. It's kinda sad now that the windows OS is matching prices with some COMPLETE COMPUTER SYSTEMS.

  12. Questionable Legality on Russian Agency Charges FBI Agent With Hacking · · Score: 1

OK well the article I just read about the Judge OKing things seems to scream a few things at me. First and most important I have to question if the FBI's actions fell into the realm of entrapment. I dont know how those laws read but it sounds like the way these guys were lured over wasn't exactly legal. Although I have to admit that if what is reported is true, then these two Russians arent exactly high on the common sense ladder. I don't see any reason for the story to be fabricated but it just seems too easy.

Also the second thing that I saw that concerns me highly is the fact that these guys were using an exploit that M$ had patched. Now the companies that didn't update with this patch, knowingly left themselves open to the attacks. This to me is just foolish and I find these companies at fault as well since they knew they were open to attack.

There are several things about this I just didnt like. Of course this is all old news.

However with this FBI agent being accused of hacking by Russian officals has sparked issues. I find it funny that the posted MSNBC article talks briefly about the fact that Russia has charged an FBI agent and focus's more on the arrest of the two Russians. Of course the two are interlinked but from the reactions of the FBI and other departments of the US government, I am guessing not a damn thing is going to happen.

From what the articles say happened it just doesnt sound like procedure was followed and the FBI is in fault for removing or downloading data without proper authority.

ALthough I guess this is a pointless rants. I mean the US is going to do whatever it pleases, legally or not. Makes ya proud to me an American huh? *sighs*

Of course using WMP was a mistake to copy music but thats beside the point. Software of this nature should never do this. The user nows what he/she is doing and if its illegal and thats between the user and the copyright holder. Anyway I am going to shutup now. This is a pointless rant. Windows is going to be like the US government and decide to police the world at everyone elses expense.

My suggestion. Get a Mac. Its a UNIX and doesnt have the bull floating thru it like any PC with windows installed on it. Even a linux user should be able to admit that Mac would be the simpler move for a person use to windows. Linux is great for the more advanced users.

Honestly I think its time windows users started complaining about software like this. It wouldnt sell on the open market. Why attach it to a OS? Or maybe thats reason enough.

I come to slashdot and read the articles cause I like to see what's up in the technical world and I have seen some very intellectual conversations here. Lots of flames too but thats beside the point. When I ran across this Paladian thing a while back I was kinda confused. I sat there thinking "Ok Microsoft wants to tell me what I can and cant run and if I get something they havent approved then I will just be SOL." Least thats my take on it. Now in my mind I was instantly thinking this sucked. From what I can gather it looks like new HARDWARE is gonna be control my computer more than I can. If I wanted to be restricted in how I use a computer I would go to ba public library. Honestly I think this is a joke. Why is microsoft spending so much money to create new hardware, which we all know about M$ and hardware *points to Xbox sales*, when their best option to would seem to be education of the USER. When cars started rolling around this earth no one knew how to use them. They were just something that scared people. As they evolved over time they got more complicated but never once did we create a system in the car that suddenly decided if the driver is doing something wrong OR might do something wrong, that it just wont response. If you steer your car into a brickwall you are going to crash and if you put software on your computer that is plagued with virii then you are going to infect your system. Oh but wait that doesnt stop hackers, which I believe this new POS is suppose to help stop. Well using the car example again. A person can break into your car and steal it. There are tons of antitheft devices out there and usually the most effective arent the mysterious ones that the car owner has no idea about. Mines is a 12 gauge shotgun and a good aim. Computer users can do the same thing with a FIREWALL. They dont need this "new" system to help stop hackers cause for every good coder out there, there is a better one that will probably try to hack into your system. I guess what makes me so annoyed is that I feel that M$ is trying to force things apon the user cause its in their own interest and they say its for the user. The user needs to decide this and not some company that cant even get bugs out of their OS. *grumbles*

I had never thought of it before but when a person buys a computer from Best Buy, I use them cause I use to work there, they take the computer home turn it on, and then they can either agree or disagree to the EULA which is the first thing they see. NOW in that case they decide but what if someone decided for them. More specificly what about the free setup that Best Buy offers when you purchase a computer. I personal setup hundreds of computers and always blazed right past the EULA cause I was in a hurry. No where on any of Best Buy's paperwork does it say that Best Buy is going to agree to the EULA for you or tell you that they are doing so. My question is does the EULA still apply to the customer that purchased the machine? Now that I think about it, it is kind of like someone forging a signature and more importantly if the customer finds out about the EULA from a someone, would Best Buy be obligated to take the machine back if the person didn't agree? I'm not a lawyer so if anyone has any idea I am curious.

  18. From a marketing standpoint on Satellite Radio - XM vs. Sirius? · · Score: 1

Well being an ex-employee of Best Buy, I moved for college and just didnt transfer my job, I can say that XM seems that it is being pushed harder. I cant say if thats a good thing but most new mid range car stereo head units are coming XM ready. Like my pioneed deck came XM ready and this was close to 6 months ago when I bought it. I didnt work in car audio I was in the tech area but I worked with a guy that was heavy into car audio. Went to all the competitions and everything. He had the XM thing setup in his eclipse. Its very nice. The sound quality was nice and the setup for it was extremely simple. The antenna was small and mounted on the roof of the car easily. Working at Best Buy meant that I had to sit thru those lame 5 in the morning meetings where we are "taught" about the new technology, more like told what to say but anyway. The advantages I heard of XM, high ammount of channels, clear signal and so forth made it sound like a very nice deal. Honestly I thought it was a wonderful thing for anyone that was on the road alot, like a trucker or someone that commutes a long way each day. Otherwise, despite the advatages over local radio, I found a 12 disk changer to be a better option for the average driver since it provided me with enough music to listen to for the amount of time I spent in the car. I ended up spending 1600 on my car stereo but declined the XM and my reasoning was this.
    1. I didnt like the idea of monthly payments for radio even though it wasnt that expensive
    2. Though the selection of music I listen to was availble thru XM, that being modern alternative and techno, I found my own CD's to be more entertaining since it was music I KNEW i liked.
    3. I dont listen to talk radio, which is one of the bigger advantages I was told about with XM. There are apparently several channels of talk radio.
    4. Most of the decks that supported XM at the time were rather expensive. The first deck I bought was an AIWA which was not XM ready. Hated it and returned it for a Pioneer which I got cause of recommendations of sound quality. It only by chance was XM ready.
For me XM wasnt practical and when I asked around about alternatives I was told that I should really only pay attention to XM since it would be around the longest. I dont know how ture that is however.
If I had to choose I would say XM but unless you are in the car all day I dont see the need for it.
Oh and yes you can listen to local stations with XM radio. The XM is an option on most XM ready radios. Its labeled as a source so once you are finished listening to XM you can just hit the "source" button and get local FM or AM or CD. The inputs the head units I have seen have the XM input as a completely seperate input.
No idea if this helps with any decisions but its my take on things.

Not like they are using a yahoo group or something to say "ok folks lets go blow something up". This psuedo-invasion of privacy that people are so scare of when they hit the send button is rediculous. In the early and mid 90's netbus was around and it could watch, look and listen to what you typed, and this was availible to the general public. The goverment looking at your email is far from the worst thing that could be done and it may look like some "Big Brother" ripe off and that our government is trying to be evil and watch what we are doing but its not. Maybe I am the only one that is a little happier that the government is taking the time to actually try to curb terrorist communications, not like the email eachother anyway but the idea is kinda nice. I just find it funny how people yell kick and scream over monitored internet use cause they feel the government is "WATCHING" them yet they go each year and tell the local DMV watch make model year and type of car they drive, along with VIN number and everything. I personally find that more of an invasion of privacy.
