Actually, the real brilliant bit behind metric is that it has evolved so that nearly everything is derived from our definition of mass and the vibration rate of cesium. Even so, we are looking to redefine mass to be based on something more grounded.
I joined when you used to have to belong to a university network and it tied into your university email account. It was a nice place for students so sure, and it was good to be exclusive. It kept things more intelligent at first and seemed more adult. This was the era of myspace and social networking really hadn't taken off yet. I guess the perception was that only 13 year old idiots and pervs join these contentless voids and that's really why I and my friends resisted at first. But then it started to become useful and we couldn't avoid it. Within 2 years or so, everyone was allowed on it and facebook changed it's layout and feature set about a dozen times to reflect this. It's less about professional now and more about social. Everyone is on it and the desire for exclusivity is long gone since we realize it's just better to have everyone on it. That's kind of the point of these things.
And to expand this to the concept of the big bang, there is no center where we exploded out of. In every point is expanding away from each other. We are all the center... everywhere.
How about this instead. How about our generation finally admit to ourselves that we are all human and aren't "good little christians". Every single one of us will have to learn to not care otherwise there will be no one left to lead.
People who play world of warcraft have no lives. This is exactly what certain companies (especially high tech) are looking for. Young employees who will sit down in front of a computer for a million hours without any family or friends to draw them away.
Sure they have some sort of pressure sensor that can stop the arm, but how will they tell the difference between say something they want to cut and something they dont??
In québec they have what is called cégep which is kind of like college for kids who are 17 and 18. I don't recall seeing any more problems with them than I do with kids in ontario who used to go through 13 grades.
I find that scientists dont often bother replicating results because their funding is to do new stuff.. not old stuff. It can be very costly and time consuming to thoroughly review.
Well.. first consider the nature of "consciousness". Our brains are still running but really at what point are we no longer human and merely a broken machine. There is no magical spot in the brain that represents our spirit, it is really the sum of a giant network of "dumb" neurons firing off based on stimulus and response. Undamaged neurons will continue to work dumbly and independently as always despite the brain being damaged to the point the person no longer exists.
"Our students have no work ethic, and no desire to learn. "
"Presently, the majority of the students I am watching as I write this have elected not to open their book and participate."
Sorry, but you're not exactly hard at work yourself if you are reading slashdot on the job. Maybe you could stand up, walk around the class and kick them all in the ass if they aren't working. I TA a decently sized class and if I make sure they are on topic while working but if they finish they can leave early. They seem motivated and productive that way.
Pretty much every manufacturer sets the default power output levels to FUCKING LOUD. This means that I can get a clean signal from your router 100m away. Worse yet, most channels have overlapping frequencies with one or two of their neighbours on either side.
Actually, 64-bit memory allows for better security. You can randomize the memory layout of a program much better with more space.
Certainly a shortage of jobs there. Or perhaps, well paying jobs. It's a lot easier finding a java/web/cloud gig.
How about we first try and get america on the 24h clock. I noticed that even this crazy posting still listed things in am/pm.

Sony finally won the standards war but is almost irrelevant because people now watch stuff on-demand via streaming.

Aren't the Egyptians telling you guys to stay out!? Maybe it's better if you don't get involved for once.

That's well above the average income round these parts.

Firefox should be able to rely on the windows/mac implementation of H.264 and avoid all of these headaches.
