I've been watching the Discovery Channel on super volcanos. There is supposed to be a 80 mile magma chamber under Yellowstone. It's supposed to be near the surface so we wouldn't have to drill to deep. Why don't we tap into that bad boy?

DRM free books have just as much life as real books, maybe even longer. I've got asc text based books that are over 20 years old. They read just fine today as they did then. Even if the formats change I will just change the update what I a have.
Yes, electronic text and pictures can out last the real thing too. That book, no matter how well taken care of, is a physical thing. Soon or later it will decay in to nothing. That is just the nature of physical things. But digital data can last forever as long as there is a technological civilzation.
If I wrote this reply on paper it might last 20 years, a 1000 is we protect it. But since it's stored electronically it could last 10,000 years, 50,000, or much much longer. There could be some one/thing reading this thread a billion years from now. Probabaly not but it can happen. There is no chance that will happen with physical media. I've tried a shit load of readers on the thing but always seem to go back to the mobi reader. I just got used to the fonts on it. I always strip out the drm from any book though, and redo it with the mobipocket creator.
I've had three palms over the last few years, I can't remember the last time I read a non fiction dead tree. The display is smaller than kindle and it does use more juice. Still with my normal reading habits I can go 2 or 3 days without recharching it. I put a leather cover on mine and it opens up like a small book. It even has that leather smell that a good book has.
And most importantly it fits in my pocket with drawing undo notice to itself. I can carry it just about everywhere.
Any deficiencies the palm has over the kindle are more than made up by it's versatility. Its a mini computer is what it is. In my hand I have all my email, my address book, a check book program (quicken), a dice roller (in case I come across a adhock D&D game), all the rule books to 2nd edition D&D, a mp3 player, and I have 300 of my best photos on the fucker.
Anything the Kindle can do my T5, or the TX, can do better. And I just checked the website, the TXis 299, a hundred bucks cheaper.

Err, No. A raid of any type is not a substitute for a proper backup. The only thing a raid 5 or a mirror set gives is marginal protection from sudden drive failure. It does not protect you from catastrophic failure like your power supply going out and cooking your entire system. That shit happened to me. Cooked my entire system, both mirror sets. If I didn't have a backup I was fucked.

All the fileserver that I manage are RAID 5 but I get calls every week from some dumb ass that has deleted some important file and needs me to dig it out of backup. Software raid is just fine for most applications in a home environment as long as you have proper backups. But that would count for a hardware raid too. The backend storage for my htpc is kept on a software raid box. I use the raid because if one drive heads south I don't want to loose the whole share. But really, if I do lose the whole share and my pirated copies of the 3 stooges head out to pasture, big deal.

I, for one, have really never found Netflix's recommendations all that useful. It sometimes recommends movies that I've already Netflixed. But to be fair I think they fixed that. It has recommended movies that I already have in my queue but most of the time it will be movies that I have no interest in at all. Then there was the time I turned in a 'G' rated movie, Disney I think, and it recommened ether Saw I or Saw II.
Not really sure where it got that one from. Nothing I had turned in that week had anything remotly to do with the Saw movies. I've even looked at my past rentals and can't find anything I think would tie me to those movies. I'm out of my blood and gore phase years ago.

And to tell the truth I don't think it's enough that anyone can really tell the difference. That is unless they place each movies side by side and flipped through them one frame at a time. The only people that care about that 20 GB difference are people that want to use the disks to store computer data. And maybe archivers who want to put whole series on one disk. That would be me for example. I would love to have all of B5 or Farscape on one monster disk.
