It's rather astonishing isn't it? here we are looking at technology that can increase our storage to petabytes (probably tons more) of storage, and a year or two ago we were worrying about, what was it?, 10, 20, even 30 gigs not being enough? In this world of 300 gig harddrives, and 120 meg floppy disks, rewriteable cds, and such, you have to wonder, when will our advance stop? and how would such a stop in our advance affect us? would we be able to cope with such? but this kind of advance, it is amazing no doubt, i am just in awe at this, and wonder if such storage technologys as in sci fi novels (like the plasma storage in such, (was it asmiov?)) will soon become a reality.

The only remaining reason for ham radio to continue to exist (and it's a really important one) is for the utterly unique educational opportunities it provides. Where else can you, as an individual, design your own antennas, build your own radios, conduct propagation experiments, experiment with your own modulation schemes, or participate in the design, construction and operation of a spacecraft? Ham radio has launched many people into productive technical careers, and that has always been its biggest payoff.
hmm, really? i always thought it was kind of usefull for public service! in an area i used to live in, the hams assist the firefighters for nearly every fire (most of the firemen are licsenced hams). they would report who was there, if any people were in the buildings, and such stuff as that, which was invaluble because they didn't have much equipment and had to choose what truck to bring out and such based on that info to save money on stuff like gas and such

(note, i think that only the computers themselves are the ones that are faulting, not any of the modules, but this does provide a learning example.) Yes, there is a kind of embedded 'os' which controlls and initilizes the hardware. I beleive that for each module it has a seperate control 'os' which does infact have the ability to 'reboot' akin to what us pc users are used to. It functions as such(according to what i have learned) lets say there is section that controls data transfer from one or two radar systems to a seperate computer, and it faults, mabey it's sent data it can't handle. it reboots, the other components failsafe untill the data transfer module is back up, and the other components resume communication. (note, this is theoretical, there may not be a 'data transfer module' for radar -> console computer, but it provides an example we can grasp.) just so, there is a os as of such, and it can reboot as such as we do on our pcs, it's just not supposed to have to do that in flight :P Anyway, there you have it, and yes, when rebooting the computer parts it does scroll some stuff across the lcds and such, and if it faults or somthing itll pause midoutput and display the error. i don't know how the reboot works, but i imagine you just toggle the computers power switch, and that reboots it :D

Are they still a "white hat" now that they are going after Linux? IBM used to be the "Great Satan" before MS. Now that they are supporting Open Source (after a fashion) are they now "white hat"? "White Hat" vs. "Black Hat" in technology is a myth. On that note of corporation white hat v. black hat I must agree, but what on the note of hackers? would you still say that there is a white hat/black hat form of hacking? one must ponder, this is a good point, but the original meaning of this is lost in this usage.
