  1. Fundamental problem with e-Books on Digital Books Start A New Chapter · · Score: 1

I seem to recall that text on a computer screen is harder to read than printed text, because the viewer is confused about its exact position in space, so the eyes are tricked into focusing slightly wrong. This certainly continues to be my experience. So as cool as ebooks are, I would not expect them to be good sellers until they are noticeably cheaper and more convenient that physical books. And of course intellectual property will be a problem.

Sure, there's no danger of something like child protection on the Internet becoming politicized, especially under a conservative "faith-based" administration that is SO careful and thoughtful with the facts. No way this Csar will end up circulating hysterical "faith-based information," screaming about the need for Internet "control of perverts," thus curtailing important free speech in the name of protecting little Sally from goatse man. Pardon my sarcasm, but really, I believe we need to choose freedom over security on this one without a doubt.

I agree that interpreting tone of email can be problematic, but no way is it just the same as chance. That's just obviously wrong by experience, think about it.

One huge gaping problem in methodology here is the apparent researcher request that students essentially fake the tone of their email. So this study is in large part measuring how well the sender *acts* "sarcastic" or "serious." From my observations in theatre, most people are not very good at faking their "tone", compared to when they actually *want* to be sarcastic or serious. A better study would have asked students to write on subjects and send the emails to their friends, then asked the sender and recipient of the tone of the email, then compared the results, without asking the sender to fake their feelings. I'll bet the percentage would go way, way up.

Opposition Papers in Elektra v. Barker in Manhattan Argue for Expansion of Law

    [Legal]

In opposition papers served yesterday in Elektra v. Barker in Manhattan federal court, the RIAA has argued that merely making files "available for distribution" is in and of itself a copyright violation.

Were the courts to accept this misguided view of copyright law, it could mean that anyone who has had a shared files folder, even for a moment, that contained copyrighted files in it, would be guilty of copyright infringement, even though the copies in the folder were legally obtained, and even though no illegal copies had ever been made of them.

I myself, a mac user, have told someone that it is okay to open an email because they are using a mac.

While I agree that Mac users cannot ignore security, I see nothing wrong with your instruction. It IS ok to open an email, and it IS because they are on a Mac that this is true. Or does Entourage continue the grand Microsoft tradition of exposing mac users to vulnerabilities created and maintained in Redmond?

The fact remains that Macintoshes are right now and have historically been more secure than Windows PC, for various reasons. Some people think it's because of Apple's low market share. Some because of Unix file-level permission control in OS X. I think these are both factors, and also Microsoft doesn't give a damn about security while Apple does (at the moment).

Attacks on Macs have to be by trickery ("social engineering" or "phishing" mostly). On Windows, you can be "attacked" simply by turning on your computer and reading email. Scary.

But whatever the reasons, if you buy and use an Apple Macintosh, you are SAFE from viruses and email-based attacks, at least for now. So go ahead, Mac users, read your email! :-)

The only thought the normal Mac user needs to give to security is, don't give out your personal information to strangers without thinking about it. And don't respond to spam.

Geeky techno-gadgets don't really catch fire because they are too hard to use, unless they are the only solution to a problem. And of course, you might have noticed through the example of Windows that there are real benefits to owning very popular technology -- lots of accessories and stuff available for iPods. That's why many people choose Windows over Macintosh.

I think the reason that "acknowledging a higher power" (not bowing, BTW) works for many people is that they have often struggled to quit drinking or whatever without success and have come to believe that they are not able to change, which is false. Belief in God gives them an important reason to try harder and new things to change, because they start to see their addiction as part of a larger system, not alone. They start treating their whole soul instead of just focusing on the drinking. Usually addicts have other problems and behaviors that feed into their addiction in a positive feedback loop, and religion teaches them to change all of it together, which is often very effective. BTW, I'm not religious, but I used to be, and the holistic approach was very helpful to me and is something I keep with me.

I guess it's time to point out again that Myth TV is no TiVo. It might be more less powerful GUI-wise, but it requires an infrared remote controller to change channels on your satellite box. This makes it unreliable maybe 5% of the time in my experience, that is, about 5% of the time, it failed to correctly change the channel as the signal somehow got "missed" from the transmitter. I require 100% reliability when I arrange a recording. It's not acceptable to miss even if it's 1% of the time, in my opinion. The system needs a hard wire or reliable wireless connection to be useful to me. I tried foil tents and other methods, but could never get perfect reliability. Ever since the time I missed a big football game I always just go with a dedicated combination TiVo/satellite box because it has the tuner internally and never misses a recording.
