Everybody who've have had a high-end German car is ready to praise German obsessive compulsiveness. You can also find a lot of shit in Germany but when they really try, then they go all out.

It's a phase. I too have been proud of writing grotesque, obtuse code. Debugging said code 6-12 months later is usually a humbling experience.

Things get dodgy when human activity causes the release of a shitload of extra CO2 and therefore amp up the greenhouse effect.

  13. Still amateur hour in NK on What Debris From North Korea's Rocket Launch Shows · · Score: 1

NK's deterrent is still only conventional, their nuclear capability is a joke.

    • Their physics package is still very crude. They need to miniaturize it in order to have something deliverable. The results also needs to be confirmed with successful tests, so before we register more NK tests, this hasn't happened.
    • Their lifting capacity is a joke, particular when they needs to carry a first generation warhead. They need a big ass rocket to drag such a contraption over long distances, so wake me up when we see them using MON and UH25 or Aerozine 50 etc.
    • Don't even mention guidance. Their satellite shot was less than impressive. The yield of their warhead is going to be modest until they do some more development, so accuracy really matters. We need to see some test-range shoots where they develop this accuracy.
    • Deterrence requires volume. Even if NK had a single perfect ICBM, it wouldn't really matter. It would be a tragedy for the casualties but any use of that ICBM would cause a retaliation that would blast NK straight into orbit. Heck, China would have to put their dog down themselves in order to prevent the whole world from coming down hard on NK.

In short NK have made a career of being a nuisance and all their antics are little more than creating bargaining chips. NK only exists because China wants a satellite state that acts as a buffer. Let them handle the mess.

  16. Re:HFT for dummies on Algorithmic Trading Glitch Costs Firm $440 Million · · Score: 5, Insightful

First, the added liquidity from HFT market makers are largely fake. They cancel 90 percent of their orders before they are executed.

Second, these market makers trade at a discount at the exchanges due to the maker-taker deals. This tips the playing field in their favor.

Third, HFT outfits utilize special order types that are moved to the front of the execution queue and therefore they can do front running on a massive scale. This causes regular buyers and sellers to take a hit.

HFT is such a dominant force in the equity market that it amounts to 75 percent of all US stock trades. This have caused the the average time that an investor holds a stock to drop to 11 seconds. With those numbers, the consequences for volatility are pretty obvious.

The best part is that the exchanges are in on the scam and are beholden to the HFT outfits least they take their business elsewhere.

All of this comes out of Your 401(k) and other long term investors not to mention the damage to the economy at large. Companies are already backing away from raising capital in the stock market because it's so obviously rigged. Likewise, investors are moving into dark pools in order to protect themselves from excessive front running.

It's a bit more tricky than that. You pay a fee each month You short a stock in the hope that the stock drops so much that You make up for the fees and make a profit.

This play requires that few want to short the stock (low fee) and that the wait isn't too long (too many fee payments).
