As much of the foreign media has been shut out of Iran and communications have been cut and/or monitored in much of iran, twitter has become a major source of news coming out of iran. As much as many here on slashdot like to bash twitter, its clear that social networking tools such as twitter and facebook can be immensely useful in this sort of repressive situation.
The traditional media have struggled to cover this, and there has been a lot of criticism of outlets such as CNN for not being on the ball.
The Huffington Post has a good blog covering much of the news coming out of twitter and blogs and some reporters still in iran. The Guardian has perhaps the best reporting of the mainstream media, with a live blog that covers official reporters and some unofficial sources.
I wont claim to know much when it comes to claiming dedictions. Theres so many loopholes that you may not be able to take advantage of some once you reach a certain income level, so you could in fact lose out (though thats probably to do exploiting loopholes rather than the original intentions of the tax office)
Yep,
Would be nice if they presented it that way on the website to help people understand that they will not going to go home with less money because of income tax after a 5% pay rise.
Interesting to see that part of the article summary is a direct copy and paste from theregister.co.uk and not a link back to the original article?
"After careful review and consideration, we are pleased to inform you that we have stopped collecting New York sales tax, effective August 21, 2008," reads an email the company tossed at customers late last week, including at least one loyal Reg reader. "This decision was driven by your direct and candid feedback and our continued commitment to you as our valued customers."

Is this some new way of cashing in by directing links to websites?
1. Sign advertising agreement with other news website
2. Post article to idle.slashdot.org (?????)
3. Profit!
It's very easy to demonstrate.
Ever "been in the zone" while playing Guitar Hero. I don't even know how I'm pressing the buttons in the right order, i just see the notes on the screen and think of clicking them, as soon as i think to hard about my fingers i mess up.
I read a story somewhere (can't find it now, maybe someone else knows this story?) some scientist-type guy working on defence stuff figured out the combinations on the safes or some-such. I don't remember the exact who or what, but instead of fixing the security problem (when he reported it) their solution was to send a memo stating that the guy wasn't allowed near the safes anymore...
This is absolutely true. I don't care for a pretty GUI, i just want a simplistic GUI, that responds fast and allows me to play the game or watch a dvd without hassle.
The best example I can give is the original Amped on the XBOX. I really liked this game, but the menu was horribly frustrating, if I wanted to restart a run, i should have been able to do it with a button clicks in less than a second. Instead i had to wait for the menu to do its pretty animation, costing me a few seconds every time, bloody annoying when youre trying to perfect a run.
I think free wi-fi in bars is a great idea. E:55 in Melbourne is a great little bar that offers free wi-fi. Everyone i see using the wifi has a beer or two on their table, so it cant be hurting business. Its great to be able to leave work for the day and send those last few emails while having a beer instead of sitting in a depressing empty office, its handy for settling those drunken arguments that always happen later in the night. They also have a few kiosk style PC's set up which you can pay to use, and its its cheaper if you buy a beer.
A few years ago i returned from a night out at about 3am, very very drunk.
I placed my cell phone down on the table next to me and passed out on my bed.
I was absolutely horrified the next morning when i woke up to see that i didnt actually leave the phone on the table, but i had dropped it into a glass of water.
I took the battery off and left it sitting on my desk for a few days and figured it couldnt hurt to see if it would still work, to my delight it did and lasted me another year or so:)
This is great news from intel.
The Pentium-M absolutely kicks the Pentium 4's butt!
Itll be interesting to see how they market this seeing as they've been the ones pushing the "More Mhz means a faster CPU" Idea.
Also, i'tll be interesting how they market the celeron line as well.
I know this was supposed to be a joke, but come on, M-Theory (and subsequently superstring theory) is 9+2 dimensions.
Here i was trying to convince my housemate that slashdotters do have a life, and then he read this.
You just set me back 3 years.

I'm not sure how you figure you lose out in australia.
Tax rates 2008-09
Taxable income
Tax on this income
$0 - $6,000
Nil
$6,001 - $34,000
15c for each $1 over $6,000
$34,001 - $80,000
$4,200 plus 30c for each $1 over $34,000
$80,001 - $180,000
$18,000 plus 40c for each $1 over $80,000
$180,001 and over
$58,000 plus 45c for each $1 over $180,000
For every extra dollar you earn, you're still going to take home at least 55 cents of that.

I think you will find that it was Richard Feynman.
Very true. Tony hawk is much better.

Simplicity is best.
Easy
Hehe. Thats quite a good one. I figured it out after two rolls, though i can see how frustrating it would be if you didnt pick up on this quickly :)
Lets play chess.

Read all about it Here in this superb documentary.
Considering GMail was launched on April 1st last year, id say you'd be pretty safe in assuming that it isnt actually a joke.

Linus said that he thought adti.net might have been hijacked or let their DNS lapse. Interesting because its down now.

Those poor gnomes.
I also heard that the version of TCP/IP in SP2 is compatible with RFC 3514
:)
Theats sure to get them some credibility in the slashdot world
Spyware can be a real prick to remove, people just cant do it themselves, even competent computer users.

Well, according to the banner add at the top of this page, Windows Server has a cheaper TCO than linux.
/. more often?
Maybe they'll just advertise on
