And what about all these up and coming standards like 'n'? With 'n', you'd have far less deployments to worry about (increased distance), and improved bandwidth. Investment in old tech is what you get when you let Gov't handle (botch) something like this.

By the time it gets through 800 committees, the original idea is so watered down you begin to wonder why it was proposed in the first place. I think this would be a better job for the private sector with gov't investment and incentive.

You can't slam the folks out there who are clueless. If the estimates are correct they are in good company - over 80% of the machines out there are infected with spyware. And then you have children using XP - what a nightmare this is!

You are right that XP can be 'patched up', but it requires vigilence to keep dodging the bullet - even Firefox needs updates from time to time.

What if there's no binary distribution for a given program in Linux? Right! You compile it. Don't lie and say this isn't a common occurance - it is, and users who would like to install new software in Linux had better get used to the 'make' command.

Why do you question the man when he says he had problems with his Java install? More importantly, why does this sort of thing surprise you? It seems to me that I've had my own share of headaches with dependancies and versioning. He was giving an example of the sort of thing that can happen in the Linux world. Sorry, but nothing beats simplicity like 'Installshield' and a registry.

Now, if it weren't for the spyware and the viruses, XP would work just fine. Whether the flaw in XP is due to man years of concentrated hacking or poor design I'll leave up to you.

SERIES finale??!! WTF?! It was just getting REALLY GOOD!!!

Having been following Battlestar Galactica's struggles as well as Enterprise (which has gotten better IMHO), I have to say that clearly something needs to be done about properly funding science fiction movies/series.

There is simply no way these types of shows can compete with the 'Friends' and reality TV shows of the world. Viewers of Sci-fi represent a real challenge and it's been this way since the original Star Trek was cancelled in 1969. No amount of letter writing is going to change the minds of execs who look at real numbers and conclude that shooting million dollar episodes of Enterprise isn't as much fun as shooting and ENTIRE SERIES of Fear Factor for the same amount.

    Here's what I have as a solution:

The Sci-fi channel (or some other enterprise) starts a pay network like HBO dedicated to science fiction with no commercials. Proceeds from that go to production of unique series/movies, further proceeds can be made from licencing (DVD's, airing on major networks, etc.)
