It seems apparent to me that you did not. Go back and re-read it.
But you know what the stupidest part is? This is just a rumour. It's unconfirmed. Here we are, wasting space posturing like any of this nonsense MEANS anything! Over what? AN UNCORROBORATED RUMOUR! What a bunch of pinheads we are.
Hi. Please re-read the post. I didn't contradict myself. I said the files themselves have essentially zero cost because of the ease with which they can be reproduced. Then note that I considered the other side of the equation. I looked at each side, and therefore see no contradiction. You disagree? Good for you.
Yeah, that's a good point. Who decided 99 cents per song anyway? In digital terms, ANY pricing is artificial because it's just bits, and you can create the files and copy them at virtually zero cost, and the cost gets lower the more copies you make. OTOH, you DO have bandwidth and storage costs to consider, not to mention the RIAA's exorbitant royalties.
Still, it shouldn't be hard to keep the price lower than 99 cents and still make money. Logically, the lower the price per song the more attractive the service will be and the more customers they'll get.
eMusic manages to get by on their $10/mo for unlimited downloads. I bet Apple could too.
It's all well and good to assert these claims, but until it's corroborated, I won't believe it. I've never heard of the "United Nations University" If it's at all connected with the UN that gives me even MORE reason to distrust the report.
The American dream, once upon a time, was pretty simple. You worked hard, raised a family and managed to have a pretty decent life.
In the 21st century, the dream has changed. The dream doesn't involve work at all. It's all about filing suits against people with money. Got lung cancer? Hey, it's not YOUR fault! It's the tobacco companies'! You're 200lbs overweight? Nevermind the fact that you havent moved your fat ass off the couch once in 10 years, or that you never exercise. Blame Burger King!
It's all about blaming anyone but yourself for your problems, preferably people with deep pockets.
This guy's an idiot if he thinks the courts will pay him any mind. He'll be lucky if they don't nail him for filing a frivolous suit.
I'm not a programmer, and I cannot think in those terms, but I do know that audio CDs store the audio information a large, chunks of raw data. A program stuck in there would be treated as audio data. So where's the application code at? That code is going to be Windows only, because that's what everyone uses, right? It wouldn't affect Mac and Linux users.
So, if it's a separate application, why not just look at the task monitor in Windows and kill it?
Unless, of course, this is a "protected" CD which has its own built-in player and which wouldn't work with any other CD playing app. In which case it's going right back to the store for a refund...
Software? OK, well, how many anti-virus apps do you NEED, really? I used to ask how many word processors a person really needed, but I've updated the question to reflect the most important software in a Windows user's life. ^_^;;
One of the many things that I like about the Macintosh is that it ignors Gator and all of the other assorted scumware out there. YAY!
I've got Mozilla set to reject their cookies, as well. Several times I've found my preferences altered to allow popups. I emailed Johan about it, and he denies any responsibility, but one of the cookies anti-leech likes to set is called "net-flip". Hardly a smoking gun, but suspicious nevertheless.
I give credit to Brian Herbert for the foresight of enlisting the help of Kevin J. Anderson in the creation of the Dune "prequels" as he openly admitted that he did not possess all of the "tools" required to under take this project, kudos.
There are those of us who believe Anderson also lacks the "tools" in question.
Anderson is a hack whose amateurish fiction smacks of the worst 'Mary Sue' fanfic. Unlike fanfic, however, you have to PAY to read Anderson's drivel.
Ah, the Mac Classic...that was a great little computer. For $1,000 you got a machine with an 80mb hard drive and 2mb of RAM. It was expandible to double that. Wow. I bought one and it was my machine for several years. I'd love to have one again. I'd prefer an SE/30, but I'll take what I can get. This iMac is getting too fast for me.;)
In a world bent on clamping down on every possible means of copyright violation (including traditional fair use), how can the warez scene survive? The real scene is already underground, operating on private FTP sites and so-on. Will it have to dig deeper still? Does this call for a new type of program, one which can resist traditional snooping tools?
It's not like the gubmint plays by the same rules it lays down for the rest of us anyway. If we held clowngress to the same financial rules it's putting down for corporate America every single one of those fuckers would be sent away for a VERY long time.
I'm all for loopholes, as long as they're tightly shut.
Now if we could just get the things banned while driving... Whatever happened to that in NY, anyway? I heard Limbaugh piss and moan about how it would kill the entertainment industry (in NY? How's THAT supposed to work?) and then I didn't hear one way or the other if it'd passed.
I want a law passed in California making it illegal not to shoot the assholes who drive and talk at the same time.
There's a ton of stuff for Gameboy, Super Nintendo and many other systems out there. Head over to emulation.net to get the emulator of your choice and then hit Usenet's emulation newsgroups for the ROMs. Legal? Not hardly. Fun? Yah, shure, youbetcha!
When these shills start hitting the street, we should have a website set up to store these peoples' pictures. You know, the ones they ask you to take?
Assuming they're going to be fully-enabled (for demo purposes, natch) we should be able to email or otherwise upload the pictures to a web site for display. People go to the web site, they see the actors' pictures, they learn who to avoid.
I just don't happen to believe that there's any justification for $1/song. So far nobody's given me any reason to believe differently. *shrug*
But it's a great show. I'm gonna miss it.

Surely there's better things to be done for the Laotians than bringing them the joys of spam and on-demand smut.

All caps, right? Time And Relative Dimensions in Space, yeah? OK. As you were.
Troll? Hardly. Just asking a question, which was answered.

If he were a democrat, would we have heard how he was a left-wing democrat? I'm just curious.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! I tell ya, it's SPOOKY!
And thank God for you knee-jerk reactionary types! It's people like you who give alternatives to mainstream platforms a bad name.

Wow! That's pretty cool! I'd love to see a Mac port.

Their own product used against them.
