Even if you're a Linux developer -- XEmacs is pretty hefty, and when running a web server, 4 instances of Galeon on 6 virtual desktops, a mail client, 28 consoles... it gets nasty in a hurry...
i cant comment on emacs (ew), but you would be amazed at how much stuff you can run with not very high memory usage.
i'm running both galeon and (new 1.1!) mozilla, a bazookarillion xterms, a few instances of vim, irc client, mp3 player, couple other little gui programs, apache, bind, ftpd, ircd, exim, mysqld, and probaly some other stuff i am forgetting. ram usage right now -- 94MB! woo!
now, this is on a p233....not exactly fast...but mozilla 1.1 is AMAZINGly fast compared to 1.0, and even leaves galeon in the dust (galeon with gecko 1.0 that is).
i cant wait for my dual duron system to be complete!
"Uhh",.deb is a filename,.deb's are debian packages. Files. Archives. Call them what you will. dpkg is what manages them, and is (I believe) what you were referring to as the backend to apt.
I agree, Wal Mart is home of cheapo everything, PC's included. They don't give 2 shits about Linux, it's about sales. I'm interested to see *normal* people asking questions about Mandrake, it should be fun. (in a masochistic way)
I'm sorry, but fuck the RIAA. they are rich, i am not. they make money off of shady business practices like marketing lude material to children, i dont. i can't buy alot of the stuff i listen to on cd, and of the things i can, a fraction of the $$ goes to the artist. the RIAA is EVIL, pure and simple. if you like large companies screwing you in the ass, thats fine, i dont. let me guess, you think MS isn't that bad? i mean, they wouldnt be so wided used if they werent doing something right!
taking a shit on you is what they're doing. i bet it feels nice.
well with 'normal' people, pressuring linux on them doesnt seem very effective or logical. how many linux users do you know started using it because someone preached it to them? the users tend to find linux, not the other way around. that goes for pretty much any OS besides win & mac.
i'd say linux with a kde desktop is pretty useable for normal things like web browsing, email, etc. its when people try to administer the machines when complexity might become a problem. but perhaps that means i'll be able to get a govt. job AND get paid for using linux!
dude, linux doesn't crash. dont you read michael's minutes!??!

wonder if it will be as pleasurable to use as gnutella is (groan)
