    From reading your post I don't think that Lindows is actually aimed at you.

    You say that they "hide the guts of the machine" including the compiler. When was the last time you saw a "typical" Windows user using a compiler? I don't recall it myself.

    Lindows is aimed at the new computer user and first-time switchers from Windows - not the typical Slashdot reader.

    If you're referring to the number of years between Win 98 and Win XP, then yes new versions of Windows come out every 3 years.

    I assume you've not taken into account Win 98 SE and Windows ME, both expensive service packs to Windows 98.

    Could be fixable by making it that the original content of the post cannot be changed, only added to.

    As the faq says you may not edit or delete posts, only clarify it. Why not have a facility so that when (as often happens) a user wants to clarify or add additional information, it can be added to their existing post instead of making a new post (provided this is logged on the page for all to see)?

    IMO it's not patently stupid.

    Many people I know have adapted to Mozilla et al, but this is mainly due to my introduction and my pushing of these apps. Forgive my assumption, but because you read and post on slashdot I assume you are fairly technical yourself.

    Consider the standard "consumer" who uses a computer: I've mostly found that they can be and very often are very inflexible.
    They want IE Favorites and not Bookmarks in Mozilla
    They want to use Kazaa instead of giFT.

    It's also been said here before, many times in fact, that SCO's Linux product was released and wasn't even pulled when they first announced that their IP was in the Linux code.

    It's no excuse that their code verification process didn't pick up this fact - IANAL, but doesn't this mean SCO have released their IP under GPL?

    Caffeine can cause health problems, IMO.

    In "regular" doses then yes it probably is relatively safe. But for those of us who "use" it regularly, it can have the following side effects / issues:

    Heart twitches
    Headaches
    Frequent use of the bathroom
    Addiction / Cold turkey
    Shaking & nervousness.

    Please note these results aren't scientific - just a matter of personal experience.

    OT, but bear with me.

    is anyone concerned about the image of the tech community and finding more realistic ways to demonstrate the creativity and resourcefulness of nerds?

    I can only speak for myself in this respect, but no. Why would I be bothered about how the mainstream view the "tech community" - if we all started worrying about how others see us, would the world be a better place? Would it be fun, being drones dedicated to furthering what you, or some other person, see as worthwhile projects?

    I personally don't see a tennis shoe with voice recognition changing society, however, what nerds/geeks/whatever you want to call them do is create something/code something which they like, which amuses them, with pleases them.

    My question to you is, why should we care about how the "mainstream" views us?

    I think the OP is referring to the fact that if he buys music in form of a CD, or from AMS, then he is free to use it and listen to it forever - whereas with the MS service, it appears, like Pressplay and the rest, that you need to keep an open subscription in order to listen to them.

    Not as far as I know.

    A customer (easyCinema) purchasing goods from the seller (a studio) would form a contract.

    IANAL either, but contracts cannot be forced on either party. I own my own company, and I could very well refuse to sell to one customer for the same price as I sold to another customer.

    It does happen occasionally, believe it or not, within the UK.

    Apparently if a cell tower is down due to maintanence, the other towers in the area do treat voice as a priority, and also when the networks are very congested, it can happen.

    My advice would be:

    Linux is just plain fun. Sure, it's not great if you need to get a lot of work done, but it's an amazing teaching tool if you want to truly learn computers.

    Not too sure how you come to this conclusion, unless its specifically related to your line of work.

    I personally use a Linux distro on my home computer, and the computer I use for business - I get a lot of work done. Through Crossover I successfully use MS Word (I prefer it over OpenOffice) and it's a great platform for manipulating our internal/external databases and also our order processing.

    IN the end, an operating system be it Windows, Linux or Mac, etc etc is simply the platform. The tools available for said platform define your productivity (to an extent).

    Yes - they did get officially fired for other issues.

    I don't know the case personally or have a background knowledge in what's happened here, however, I've seen things happen before:

    1. Employee reports something which TPTB don't like.
    2. Employers string together reasons for dismissing said employee, often petty.
    3. Unemployment
    4. ????
    5. Lack of profit.

    Child porn is the exploitation of those classified as children (under 18 in most countries, less in other countries).

    Downloading child pornography even for free is showing the masterminds behind it that there is a market and a demand for it.

    IMO it's a good application for this technology. Rent a DVD from a store/mail order and simply return in the prepaid envolope which gives you credits towards future rentals.

    Wouldn't necessarily be great for those titles which "disappear into the Previously Viewed" bin - they can sell these titles for a knockdown price. How much would you pay for a bargain DVD which doesn't play?

    Internet Explorer: Agreed - I can't see it benefiting MS with the exception of market share. Unless, however, there is a master plan in place to charge all those corporations/individuals royalty fees in future for embedding the IE rendering component within applications. (note that this would open up a completely new can of worms in terms of current licensing which I'm not discussing here).

    And with regards to WMP, I think one of the other replies says it all. Its a platform which is available on 95% of the world's desktops (give or take a few of us Mac & Linux users) and I'm sure their masterplan is to liase with the recording industry and create a secure computing platform (not my words) for the playback of music.

    If cheap CPUs are being subsidized by the sales of Barton MPs, aren't people who modify their CPUs performing the equivalent of, say, buying Windows XP Home and stealing Windows XP Server?

    I prefer to see it as the equivalent of buying an XBox (loss leader) and buying no games, but installing GNU/Linux on it. Anyway, last I heard, the MS Windows operating systems were all sold at a huge profit.

    You could also say that it's like buying a lossmaking piece of Microsoft software, and using Wine to run it via Linux.

    Most modders/overclockers realise the risks involved and problems which can happen. This is a risk which we take, just like the fact that our warranty will be of no use.

    If you can get an XP to run as an MP and fit two in a system board, and get it to work, then wouldn't it be worth the cost savings to an individual modder?
