But it's a boring question. The vast majority of players want a clean game experience and, for better or for worse, trust Blizzard to use the info they gather to step on cheaters and leave everybody else alone. 90% of the server population will play on the no-cheat realms. That's why Blizzard created this software in the first place; they know full well that the number of people who'll be truly upset and cancel their accounts over The Warden will be vastly less than the people who'll be upset and quit over widespread cheating.

Way to butress your claims, I'm sure people are finding you real credible.

Most mental health professionals agree that sexual atypicalness isn't really a problem alone, but becomes a problem when the person in question makes it a problem for themselves. There's nothing wrong with your facination with 'Bastet or Cthulu worshipping gothic pagans with dominant tendencies who in the height of passion also enjoy shots of their significant others' blood', but if you keep projecting and rejecting this part of yourself like this, you'll never really be at peace with your sexuality.

Because there aren't any Linux media hackers in the world who'll do a rip app to fool media apps into thinking it's outputting to a DRM-protected one-of-these and instead it just gets dumped to a data file for P2P.

I mean, what are the odds? DeCSS was just a fluke.

Or, to be less snide... yes, clearly this is an attempt to create a DRM-enabled display standard, the idea being to prevent people from intercepting the unencoded, unprotected signal coming out of your video card. But, as always, the client is in the hands of the enemy. All the information needed to snap this like a twig is already present on the box.

The only way DRM will ever work is government-enforced computer controls and white-listing of 'approved' software, with unapproved software being locked out (yes, there are ways even around that, but at that point it's too much trouble for John Doe to set up the whitewashing needed to run an unapproved box that looks clean to Big Brother). And even that will just force uncontrolled boxes off the Internet (as we know it) onto grey or black wireless networks outside the reach of governments.

It's a small thing, but the thing that most impressed me recently in MMORPG design was City of Heros' boss/lieutenant/minion breakdown of the mobs in a group, along with populating each group with, rather than the 1, 2, or 3 or so mobs common to the EQ paradigm, 6 or 10 or 15. Minions were little trashy things, no match at all for the PCs and only dangerous in large groups (which would occasionally be provided), while bosses were nearly a PC's equal or more. It was a very nice change from the pacing of many MMORPGs, where you daren't pull more than one or two mobs at a time. It seemed much more 'heroic' to me to engage large groups of foes and triumph. I think it could work very well for a fantasy or S/F-themed MMORPG just as well as it does for City of Heroes.

On the other hand, though, they had reason to know they were publishing an edgy game in a time when their industry was under heavy scrutiny by the Powers-That-Be. Is that fair to them? Of course not. It's unfair to the entire industry, and I'm not any happier about it than you are. However, as part of the industry, I think Rockstar behaved quite irresponsibly and has now certainly set the cause of video-games-as-legitimate-cultural-content back years, if not decades. If it's a choice between 'hot coffee' and 'no hot coffee', while it's not Rockstar's fault that they exist in a climate of cultural paranoia, I still wish they'd switched to decaf.

Hm, I got modded as a troll for saying what you just said.

Frankly, the reason I think Vanguard is going to be much less successful than people like rellix think is the near-total unquestioning devotion and intolerance of alternative perspectives that V:SoH anticipators display in threads like this.

It's established fact, to the point of being banal, that McQuad was the person at Verant that wanted to retain slow level grinds, item camps, hell levels, competition for a limited supply of spawns, etc, etc. You can like this and support it in V:SoH, or you can dislike this and prefer, say, WoW's design. But pointing out that the people who put that stuff in EQ are the same people designing V:SoH isn't a troll. It's just a fact.

And if you find that fact angering or threatening, maybe you need to reassess your opinion of how good V:SoH is likely to be.
