Interesting you mention this: There are literally hundreds of stones all around northern Europe/Asia which clearly is covered with some sort of writing. On the other hand, no one knows how to read it.

One crazypot was claiming that he could read one in Finland in old Turkish (which is streching the truth a little bit but hey!), he was claiming that these stones were erected by Hun/Turk tribe leaders around the world, noting down what they've done etc.

On the other hand, there are stuff already like these mail archives and at least this one was encrypted finally in 1893.

I live an apartment. Interestingly enough the people who live in houses around my apartment have a spacial bin from the council where you can put your green waste in and they will compost it for you. For this service I can let them have the money they earn froms elling the compost (if it covers their costs). This was fine when I lived in a house. I year ago I moved out of that place and moved into this one. I share a closed enclosure for my rubbish and there is no way of binning the green waste properly. I don't produce much (a single geek can produce so much kitchen waste) and my habit of eating these days is reasonably healthy (lots of salads and stuff). I hardly have to empty my bin in a week (I don't produce a lot of unrecycleable stuff either, cans get recycled as does glass).

I can't handle the idea of worms in my kitchen either. It is a good idea to have for people like me.

Science should not be commercial. If you allow that then you will find out that only the science that actually creates a profit will get funded and only the type of science that favours a business. As a result no more research on causes of lung cancer (against Tobacco lobby) or alternatives to painkillers (against drug manufacturers lobby) and you will never ever get research for the basic stuff like General Relavitivy and the stuff that matters.

Probably most of the cost is because of accounting reasons like paying for 'already built and subsidised' Deep Space Network, computers already bought and sitting on people's desks, network connections already plugged in and only using electricity as a cost etc. No way it would cost for anyone to run something where they listen to and collect data from only a couple of days a year. It's the beancounters' way of calculating things. Most of the stuff won't be freed because they can't use for anything else, some stuff has more 'value' like DSN time but that is virtual money, it costs NASA exactly the same amount of money regardless what it is used for.

Why would you do that, so down the line? Obvious time to test is when you finish building the equipment, still in the manufacturer's lab, before shipping it out. This makes sense especially if the rest of the rover is not going to affect it. Once you have the pieces on the bench, you install them, run through the health checklist and you are done. if some poor sod mixes the boxes, though. Shit happens. It is no big deal because nothing is compromised. Once you run your perl scripts to re-parse the calculations you are done.

BBC does and can continue producing both sides of the spectrum. A lot of stuff coming out of BBC would be at home in other channels but I don't see a commercial broadcaster replacing Today or PM on radio 4.

There are a couple of talk-based DAB channels but I hardly tune to them. The reason is not I don't tune to them because they are crap, the fact is BBC is better. Commercial companies must compete to produce intelligent programs, you can't achieve that by destroying BBC.

For the masses, who cares? Make a six hours of football and six hours of soap channel and you're done!
