(i say better because NO BROWSER should ever be part of the OS. its an add on not a neccasity.) anybody who says they want as basic computer and asks me gets redhat. (and depending on how basic they want i usually give them 7.3. cause 8.0 plays microshaft style and breaks alot of shit.) and most people who use there computer dont do jack shnn with it. hell i once had a guy about 2 years ago come up to me in circuit city (yes i *gulp* worked there at one point.) and tell me he wasnt running windows. i asked what he was running and he couldnt tell me so i had him bring in his box and guess wha ? he had deleted every desktop icon on the box. thinking that got rid of windows.

and the moral of the story is: if you dont play games you dont *need* windows. and most people dont have a damn clue what windows *is* exactly anyway.

thats wrong. if you switch from SuSe to Gentoo or Gentoo to Redhat , you can VERY EASILY copy/keep your (standard.) configs. if your having a problem finding it do '$ locate x.conf' wala copy your old config over the new one. [dont forget to make a backup]

(obviously this only applies to things that are availible on EVERY distro. (and are standard) such as xfree configs , sendmail, or .bashrc etc....)

copying a redhat specific config to slackware wont do you much more good than it would for you to copy a windows XP config to a windows 95 box. or a 3.1 config to a 2k box.

obviosly the "well engineered" projects will make/keep standard configs/backwards compatibility (to a certain degree anyway.)

oh and one more thing ---- once LSB becomes more common and people *cough* REDHAT *cough* stop bastardizing everything then what will your reason be ?

"ii) I have a running Windows system. Why should I kick everything I have on it?"

probably the same reason most people do - it sucks. face it windows is good only for people who turn their PC's off at night and use them one hour a day. (and gamers) windows allows you NO GROWTH. they think they should control your whole damn system. when you update , how you update, what you update.(even if it breaks the hell out of something) do they control everything yet ? nope. will they ? probably , has long has people like you keep paying to upgrade to the next security bug.

and no i dont do windows. havent touched windows in over 2 years, and probably never will again.

oh and let me ask you something.
when you first started learning on a computer did you automatically "know" everything about it ? or did you have to learn about it ? did you sometimes get frustrated ? okay if you are like most people you got frustrated, confused etc. so why is it you expect to learn a completely new OS/setup and not have the same problems ?

next time you post something like this either be informed or put something like *mac lover: dont know linux* as the header because those statements you just made are pretty sweeping, very broad and by-and-large WAY WAY off the mark.

i will give mac credit, they have a good GUI and more "default install" software for what this guy is looking for, and if he is a microsoftee he will probally handle that transition much better than the one too linux.

    a) running.
    b) accessable (by human or machine)
    c) connected

if these so called "secure applications" or "trusted applications" (i call them pieces of sh!t like all other MS code) run. are accessable to a user (trusted or not, getting access as a trusted user is a whole different issue) or accessable to the system. or have access to the internet/network then they are vulnerable. and if you think microshaft is soooooo good at coding securely (i truly belive this is just one big patch to cover all the holes in IIS outlook etc... but thats another rant) that somewhere in the system they have the ability to code a "hackproof" layer , well your high. or your an MS employee. and just for shits and giggles i'll explain:

you have a system (a PC for the sake of argument) that is running on a 90% uptime cable modem. so it accessable to the internet. right ? ok. whats going to keep a piece of code frmo hitting this system and exposing/exploiting some POS code MS put on the system ? hardware ? hardware is usually controlled by software at SOME level (BIOS, OS whatever) so it is accessable. (albeit low-level) so what exactly are they accomplishing ? making it harder to get to the actual "guts" of the system from the outside ? not really. all you would have to do is craft some sort of machine code to "open" the secure hardware. (and dont give me this "impossible" cruft because NOTHING is impossible. it might take time but mark my words someone will do it) once you are past the hardware you now have access to the guts of the system. and i dont care who coded it. there is NO SUCH THING AS a piece of "unhackable" or "uncrackable" software. period. if it can be done it can be undone.

but thats not the big point. i can debate how secure this is til i am blue in the face. the real question is what does this accomplish ? and at what price ?

generally speaking the "hardware" will cost more (if they build DRM onto something its going to cost more.). the fair use rights go to hell. if I make an MP3 of my band then send it to a friend who cannot play it or burn it to a cd because its not "trusted". and if it is trusted and can be run by the OS, well that defeats the purpose of this whole thing. (if i can run anything i want then the system is flawed. period. cause all i would have to do is run my speaker-out to my A/V reciever and then to my A/V cd/dvd burner)

and your analogy of running any software you want is only half right. the way i understand it is untrusted apps or media will only have certain abilities. copying "trusted" files with an "untrusted app" isnt going to work. and vice-versa

but if you want to trust them go ahead. just dont expect me to.
