I'm a Lightwave animator, so spare me the 'Linux will solve all your problems' crap.
to me (and this does seem to be where the argument started) that implys there are no alternatives to lightwave on linux. thats wrong. i never said you were wrong, and if it sounds that way oh well tough nookies. what i said was simply that our sig comes off as saying there is no good rendering software for linux - and thats wrong
right, if your biggest issue is photo/DR stuff go get an SGI box would ya....oh and IRIX runs on SGI's better boxes.... and i dont give a good hoot nany weather you agree with me or not. you just imply there is no alternative on linux, - WRONG !
no actually i couldnt care less if you use/like linux. my point is very simple your sig is making a statement that is untrue.
you might not like the rendering software thats out there for linux. but thats not what your sig implys.
and yes i am a zealot. which is why i will make this statement. 'people who dont get_it shoudlnt use_it' simple, you obviously think because you have a webserver running the most bloated and commercial flavor of linux that you know linux. thats like saying because i installed openBSD i know openBSD. un-true the only thing you know is what you like, thats it. i never stated anything as a fact. you did, and you implied something that is not true.
and damn it kinda makes you wonder how weta does all that stuff on linux using an 'inferior' renderers.
am i the only person who is sick of people trying to make everything "stupid" so everyone can get_it ?
i mean REALLY (or Really , really, ReAlLy , r3a11y etc....) if someone is so damn dense that they cant type ls and find what the are looking for (or god forbid use a file browser : konqueror.) then maybe just maybe they should stay the hell away from our favorite OS ? and keep themselves in the stupid pool (AKA windows land) ?
and really im not sure who is worse the person who thinks that everything should be dumbed down, or the one it needs to be dumbed down for. in all reality most people will get_it they just need a small walkthrough just like they did when they first started using windows.
i think linux should patently avoid working with windows, and make windows work with it.
the windows clients rely on servers for there mail, web etc.... well most of them are unix based so windows should be the ones trying to work WITH something. problem is they dont - instead they try to make everything proprietary so everyone has to buy there slow unstable crap, like exchange.
and be it that i bash windows and promote linux - yet my karma sucks hard. i would assume windows promoters get modded up. yet us "zealots" get modded down. *just a thought*
1.) there are plenty of rendering programs for linux, that cost just as much as lightwave.
2.) GIMP *takes a while to get used to but is just as effective
3.) what new hardware doesnt work with linux ? i have a radeon 8500 and it works better in linux than in windows.
4.) windows offers a better web experience ? on what friggin planet? IE doesnt even handle SSL v2.0 correctly, get a grip. *and dont tell me you use mozilla or netscape because they both run on linux*, and flash and java work just fine on linux. -and java works like crap on windows. dont agree ? go use it on solaris.
5.) not asking you to gain popularity points. your the one trying to bash something with your sig. not me.
6.) you try running a real linux distro (READ: gentoo , slackware etc...*namely not redhat or debian) and tell me it doesnt do most things better than windows. and dont give me this i have one at work cruft. 'cause you've already proven my point - you dont know anything about linux, yet you had too make a comment about it. and i being the open-source advocate i am had to point that out.
have you ever used linux ?
you can have a window manager running and still you a prompt. has nothing to do with a mouse.
see enlightenment.org... thats the window manager i use. for better screenshots try themes.org
oh of course the typical winslow user bringing up money... always a good defense for you glutons.
and what do you need a gui for ? afraid of the big bad BASH prompt ? or wait its not an actual shell on windows..... afraid of the big bad DOS prompt ?
and if you want to use a gui Kdevelop, qt designer both work fairly well. and if you actually want to program not script you could use c/c++
actually i would use it too go forward in time and dicover a way to get the hell of this rock. then go back in time and kill the guy who came up with it so the glutons (TM) who run this hole dont spread like VD.to other planets......
i must give it too you my friend you have balls to post something assuming you know what people will want 50 years before they are even born.
smart people who are loved or have money will always be wanted in ANY time. imagine being able to revive all the great minds at once ? or the great political leaders to get our gov't out of this muck and mire it is in ? how about bussiness men to help guide large companies that are failing ? econimic leaders ? ? ? ?
the uses of this kind of technology are limitless.... whereas your thought on the subject is obviously not.
and no i do not assume they would want me.
but if i have kids they may want me , or their kids and so on.....
and i fail to see how wanting to extend your life is short sighted ? or even greedy ?
i mean is my being in a block of ice somehow harming your quality of life ?
and actually in my opinion i would want more people around me who want to live as long as possible and enjoy life not the people who are nay-sayers of things that are beyond there comprehension.
and hasnt man been trying to forgo mortality for about has long as they could comprehend it ?
the fountain of youth rings bell.......
i agree that SOMETIMES solving deps can be a pain...... but forget apt-get try using the emerge system for gentoo (gentoo.org)... it rocks..... but it also needs a GUI
right.... and i agree that for a "windoze" user windoze will be easier to use.
but what about a non-user who is just getting started. if you take 2 10yr olds and start one on windows and the other on linux i am willing to bet the one on linux will be , more comfortable with computers, more prone to using new technology, better at trouble shooting simple tasks, and have a better understanding of how computers really work. plus he would probally be more adept at using windows than the windows user would be at using linux.
the point really is "ease of learning" not ease of use..... ease of use is learned. i am better at a BASH prompt than most people are with a mouse. so to me BASH prompt is easier to use.
and i have no doubt that if you were raised on M$ cruft that it would take you a while to get used too linux. and vica versa
see the other posters comment about only needing to run Xconfig once......
but as far has usability linux kills windows in my opinion. just because someone knows how to use windows but not linux doesnt make linux harder to use. it means they have to learn it just like they did for windows. and mac (if they are that old).
and try red-hat 7.2 or 7.3.... usability wise i think it beats windows hands down. and i might add something else... for somebody who knows NOTHING about computers (never used one) linux will be better based on three things 1) speed - its faster than windows period 2) stability - no "frustrating" crashes OR reboots 3) cost - almost ALL software for linux that the average user would need is free now ill admit that somebody will have to teach the noob how to use the box..... but face facts somebody had to teach you how-to use windows
(i am not talking about opening a web browser. i am talking about configuring a box - and no you didnt just "know" how to run sysconfig)
yeah cause it is SOOOOOOOOOO hard to bookmark rpmfind.net...........
have you ever even USED linux ? or did you just read about it on cnet ?
sorry to break you the news but for the average user redhat 7.3 is easier to install and use than ANY version of windows, people like you seem to think that because they would have to learn the new "names" of software (ie openoffice instead of office , evolution instead of outlook) and a few differences in where to click that they aren't going to "get it".
and how often is it that linuxboxes crash and burn with new hardware lik XP or ME do ? the only time i have EVER had a hardware issue was with my video card... (and all i needed to do was run up2date and get a newer kernel).
and since we are on the subject give gentoo a year and there emerge system will be the best system for updating software period.
but the point was the comparison (all be it poorly worded) dvd-r's (or burners if you will) are a "tool" that allow for legit uses but also have the drawback of being able to copy a dvd movie (with some trickery mind you).... DeCSS is a tool with legit uses , that can ALSO be used to help you copy dvd-movies.....
not to mention the cheapers the dvd burners get the more likely some one will cmoe up with a very "user-friendly" dvd-copying program......

and VB is so much better than perl
LMAO

wait ... i think i have it ...... yes it is its cold fusion ..... ....
......
... im bored as hell i guess.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH FREEZE BRAIN
WARNING: DO NOT COLD FUSION LATE AT NIGHT OR WHILE OPERATING LARGE MACHINES.
and no i dont have a damn clue why i posted that
and cold fusion is still just a theory. (i think)
funny i thought it was miami-dade county ?
;-)
eh, well maybe im confused
well when blender goes Open it will be better than lightwave so pffft !
No. microsoft doesnt give licensing money back to you. never have never will .....
oh my ......

now slow a$$ driving soccer dads in mini vans are posting to

i would say by far and away the majority of linux users have a broadband connection.
and also that people who have a dail-up still download mp3's and pr0n so downloading an iso isnt that much of a strech.
