Ads were "an annoyance you have to deal with in a free society," lawyer Anthony J. Dain is quoted as saying. Bearing in mind that advertising something on the TV or radio and crawling into someone's house through an open window and pinning a flyer on the fridge are not the same thing...
You said:
Free speech doesn't allow you to run protection rackets, so why this? It's the same thing, if you think about it: sending popups with a promise to stop if you're paid. The only differences are in degree and scale.
Advertisements may be a form of "speech" protected by our amendments (and I agree with you there), and paid for to promote products on television but our computers are more interactive than a remote control and for a variety of reasons.
However, computers are like our homes. You should not just walk on in and post a message on my couch, refrigerator, nightstand or bathroom mirror. They are personal, just like our homes, arranged to be just like we want them and left that way. The naivete of most computer users equals that of a new home owner, but on a longer time line. they don't know how to protect themselves all the time, or perhaps at all in the correct ways (barring the illusion of security) and it's up to many people to have some ethics not to violate others privacy, rights to a secure home (or computer) etc.
So if you know someone that' being violated, don't complain about the perpetrator(s). fix their problem and warn them about those said perpetrator(s) and tell them how to protect themselves./personal_rant
I'm sure you've never taken an economics class but let me break it down for you.
Consumer(s) = individual(s) of a large/small demographic who buys good. i.e. they consume.// we're all consumers
Customer = said specific consumer of which is more personal, human, than the aforementioned generalization.
(this next part is oblig. b/c of some nut jobs) citizen = member of a country, society; consumer, customer, human being etc etc.
What everyone fails to acknowledge here is that the market-droids or other execs use "consumer" as just a way to simplify what we are. We are consumers. It doesn't change the fact that we are customers (of bartering, by purchase or other method) of any company and it doesn't change the fact that we want to be recognized as human beings.
Lax concern for peoples easily hurt feelings isn't their problem. You're in control of your emotional state (for the most people, bi-polars and schitzo's exempt) and you're in charge of your education. If you become offended at the notion of being called a consumer then I suggest you get some more education by whatever means you deem fit at that period of your life by university or independent study. Face it, we are ALL consumers. ALL OF US. YOU CAN NOT, NOT, BE A CONSUMER. This is a fact of life and their non-nonchalant, trivial use of the word hurting your own feelings really shows character of what you don't know.
Ignorance is not a plea, and by whining about it because you demand "respect to the people" (which is valid in many situations) won't change the fact that you may need a little more of an education to realize that it's a general blanket statement to cover the entire buying population.
sans some obvious mis-moderation, I'm not trolling or trying to be condescending. But this kind of reaction of "I'm not a consumer, I'm a xx xx citizen/customer" from people gets old, and truly shows how ignorant you are.
Your implication was quite clear regarding your opinion of something being professional when it's clearly not.
However your supposition of fiction to mean truth regarding "kids overrunning/."... is hardly worth the effort to even validate with an arguement considering you seem to suffer from "i have a lower UID so I must be cooler" disease. Congrats. Now check yourself into therapy
you consider this a professional page? regardless of/. being a part of OSDN, it's hardly professional. Compare NYTimes/Washington Post etc. Article blurbs/intros to/.'s and you'll see a difference. If you can't, you've no clue how journalism works.
A 503 Error doesn't mean the server is down. I means that/. has a server to tell you that the service isn't available at the moment. I'm willing to bet the server never went down over the past week of 503's, but rather they're still working on smaller upgrades since their major one a couple weeks ago (remember that friday night at 9pm est people went nuts over?).
riight. I'm sure the/. crowd will get off from headlines like these:
"Gr0up sludge, one on one amoeba action" "Granny protovirus get plugged by the AIDS virus" "Hot Hot Hot Group cheerleader white on red blood cell action" "Click here for the best sicle cell (midget) poRn in town!"
No thanks, I'll stick with my regular multi cellular action - aka - real woman.
this is one of the biggest issues I have with CS players. when I ask what command your alt-fire is, I get "Right-Click" from 99% of the people. CS people have no FUCKING CLUE what the hell a bind is, or even scripting for that matter (you know, when one button can do 4 functions in order and cycle them over and over again).
These kids don't have a fucking clue what they're doing and bitch and moan when they get owned by a legit skilled player.
"0mfg n00b h4x0r, gtf0 teh s3rv3r" - is not a way to validate your poor skill.
good god man, learn what the command is and how to set a bind in the console on the fly if you need to. here's a bit of a clue:
I did this to two of my former (RE: FORMER) bosses and each time, it was a little more complete recording of his activities. They were fired for being slack-asses and I was given a bonus for keeping the "mis-use" (or in other words, extreme non work usage of the computers) of the systems to a minimum.
Not only was I given a bonus, I am now the a lead for our MIS department in charge of corperate security. Under the current regulations, we watch the watchers, and get paid VERY well to do so. Trust is involved, and we have it. However, we are close with the CEO and CFO, so we "keep tabs" on them, but are under strict orders to keep it quiet - unless it is illegal, however we don't monitor their systems at all. They, after all, pay us and that's how they want it.
you know, before Lucas and Co. decided to ruin the origional franchise, people had LD copies of SW. I want to find a few and put them on DVD as well... you know.. becase my tape copies are almost 20+ years old. There's only so much you can do with a 20+ year old tape.
I WANT MY LD AND MAKE SOME DVD ISO'S FOR PEOPLE OF THE BEST VERSION OF STARWARS EVER!/rant
that being said, if anyone has an LD of StarWars, I'll do the conversion for free. email me for details if you're interested!

It's a culture where citizens are trained to value only what's shiny and new, and to dispose of the old and used. How any relationship can survive in that environment is a mystery only philosophers and Slashdot commentators might dare address
This is what I've been trying to figure out for years! HOW!?!!??
So Mektu.net has tried coating videogame controllers with chemical rubber - it seems to improve grip, and possibly even your score.
My girl improved her grip without the rubber so I don't know wha.. wait.
This is a game controller? Eh *tries to recover* who said love wasn't a game?

Microsoft has currently installed Sol on our computers even up to a decade ago.
Hit WINDOWS KEY + R type in SOL ENTER
Sol is right here, no need for travel!
.. because I'd love to buy one of these. The only thing americans wont buy this for in many cases is the higher price.
...however in the general, such a generic label is accurate. no matter how offending it may be.

When did the switch happen?
With handwriting and voice recognition technologies, is using a QWERTY keyboard with nine out of ten fingers something worth knowing anymore?"
I only have 9 fingers you insensitive clod!

well I have to say that brings back fond memories of prom night.
