  1. If more likely, evolution will select for those who are susceptible to psychological attacks... sorry, targeted advertising.

I would compare the current system more to digitized slavery than psychological attacks. In the eyes of big data human beings are only worth as much as the marketable data they provide. We have become dependent on a wide range of social media platforms and other miscellaneous services that are offered as "free"; all the while the companies behind them are profiting off of everything we do.

  2. Rise of the Chinese Empire on VW Says China To Become Global Software Development Hub For Autonomous Tech (reuters.com) · · Score: 1

First GLOBAL cellular infrastructure development (Huawei's 5G), and now GLOBAL autonomous vehicle architecture development. In all seriousness, China is making some very scary moves. This is the first point in history where the US has a serious contender to the "global superpower" throne... the next decade will undoubtedly decide the fate of this title.

  3. ... where your existence is reduced to an advertising ID that determines every interaction you make. As you get older, everything from the ads you see to the media that you consume is crafted specifically to your current age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, religion, etc.

    Is this inevitable?

  4. Run out and buy one quick - they'll be more collectable than Beanie Babies. And the marketing drones who thought this up will get nice bonuses.

Indeed.... FaceBook is the master of social manipulation.

Obviously the first applications should be self driving Buses, Long Haul 18 wheelers, Garbage Trucks, etc. etc.

Those would indeed be the most logical applications of self-driving vehicles... but they would also cause the biggest economic disruptions. Bus/truck drivers & garbage men are notorious for aggressive union activity; imagine the outcry if they feel like their professions will be threatened by autonomy?

It would be the "NYC taxi drivers vs. Uber" situation on a much larger scale.

The Pirate Bay is free -- $50 is almost basic cable pricing territory. What a joke.

Exactly. One of the issues streaming services will face is that it's a lot easier to pirate their media than traditional cable services. $50/month is more than enough to make a [somewhat] ethical person cancel their sub and turn to the dark side!

  7. All of these comments are petty arguments over politics and race, when the real issue here is that technology has been getting developed specifically for intrusive use by the government. Where do we draw the line? Obviously, the crime this kid did brings little sympathy...

When you've already tossed "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law" overboard... Your concern about civil rights and government intrusion rings more than a little hollow.

Civil rights, and the overarching governments, will undoubtedly change with the weather. Technology is a much scarier adversary- once you start a particular path of innovation and development, there's no turning back.

This type of innovative thinking deserves an award!!!

  13. What About "Content Fatigue"? on As 'Subscription Fatigue' Sets In, the OTT Reckoning May Be Upon Us (adweek.com) · · Score: 1

Perhaps the bigger issue here is "content fatigue". We live in a day & age when the production model for all digital media (movies, music, video games, etc.) is quantity over quality. With streaming services now producing their own content (Netflix exclusives, Amazon Prime exclusives.... you get the picture), there is now this silent race to constantly push out as much exclusive media as possible. Give the new Disney streaming service a couple of months- I guarantee you that they too will have their own Disney exclusives that require a subscription to access (if they don't have these already...).

Personally, I would rather consume quality content once in while than consume a constant flow of bullshit. Modern-day movies and TV shows use special effects to fill the gaps in their half-assed productions. I am a millennial, yet I still find myself enjoying classic movies from the 1970-2000 era more than the mass quantities of exclusive content that I get through Netflix and Amazon Prime.

How about creating a streaming service that only offers top-rated productions, both modern and classic, as well as the occasional, well-directed exclusive movie? I would definitely subscribe to that.

Yes, I've had several iPhones and even a MacBook at one point. The issue with Apple is that they now push the illusion of selling a "luxury" product and use that as an excuse to drastically overcharge consumers. A computer is a productivity device- it's value is purely defined by it's ability to compute. 10-20 years ago the high cost could be rationalized by Apple's proprietary OS, but Windows now dominates the workstation OS market and is a far better option.

If Gucci started selling laptops with last-gen i3's and 4GB RAM, would you buy them for $2,000 just because they have the Gucci logo on them??

  15. Let's do some basic math my friends!!! on The Most Powerful iMac Pro Now Costs $15,927 (vice.com) · · Score: 1

Why do I hate Apple so much? Because they are literally raping their fanboy customers. Let's do a comparative breakdown of this so-called "$16k Build" based on NewEgg's prices: -256GB DDR4 RAM: Around $1,000 -16GB GPU (Radeon VII): $700 -18-core Intel CPU (Intel i9 9980XE): $2,000 -1TB SSD and 8TB HDD: Around $300 -Other components (case, motherboard, fans, etc.): Around $1,000 -28" 4k monitor (good brand): Around $500 .... At most, that's $5,500 in hardware (and that's WITHOUT the enormous discount Apple is getting). Even if you DOUBLE the hardware cost to account for a decent profit margin/assembly cost/distribution cost/proprietary OS, that's still not even close to the $16,000 price tag. You would be better off buying 32 Supreme bricks for $500 each (https://www.ebay.com/itm/DS-New-Supreme-Brick-New-York-F-W-2016-FW16-Box-Logo-100-AUTHENTIC-/263035238535).
