Amm... Linux was started in 1991 (?). It didn't get 'popular' until around 1995 (?).

OK then, 11 years, and it still doesn't have a standard GUI, none of it's browsers are w3c complient and/or don't support Javascript, and STILL can't run Win32 apps. Eat it.

Now, Linux is based on the *idea* of UNIX, so while Linux may be just "Linux", it is also a UNIX box.
ie: you're comparing 2 different worlds, the Windows world and the UNIX world.

Huh? OK, it's a cheap copy of UNIX that doesn't comply with UNIX standards and is not trying to corrupt desktop standards. Thanks for clarifying that.

Now, traditionally, Windows was always a toy operating system in the eyes of anybody who ever worked on a UNIX. And, in many ways, it is still just a toy.

Ah, I see. You don't understand Windows, therefore it's considered a "toy" OS, as in OS dilettante dabblers. IMO, it's just the opposite: Linux is the toy, and Windows is the established standard. What is the MCSE? I guess people spend money to learn about toys, huh? And why isn't there a Lunix equivilant? Maybe because the only way to learn it is "playing" with it in their parent's basement?

That's right, suck it and like it. OSS will never compare to Microsoft products for 3 reasons:

    1. Compatibility. Everyone writes programs for Windows, period. Yeah, sometimes the Mac zealots cry until they get a game or two a year after initial release, but that's the only exception. Remember the Loki debacle? LMFAO! It made Enron look like an honest mistake!

    2. Future. Microsoft is here to stay. Even *if* Microsoft somehow dissapeared, their products are still here, and will be for quite some time. If you don't believe me, look at Netware and any company that still runs it (every major banking firm still runs it as well as most companies that have been around before the .bomb craze).

    3. Past. Microsoft has been around since the early 80's, and DOS (which is what Windows is based on) has even earlier roots. The source for Windows originated from the early MacOS (80's again), and MacOS has it's roots from the Xerox GUI, which is early 70's. When was Lunix started again? 1995? 1996? 6 fucking years and it has yet to run one single Microsoft app! WTF kind of POSIX complience is that?
    I rest my case.

  21. FIRST NETWARE POST on ICANN Bucharest Meeting Comes to a Close · · Score: -1, Offtopic

It is official; Netcraft confirms: Netware is dying

One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Novell community when IDC confirmed that Netware market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that Netware has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Novell is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.

You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict Novell's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Novell faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Novell because Netware is dying. Things are looking very bad for Novell. As many of us are already aware, Netware continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

Corel Netware is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time Corel developers Jordan Hubbard and Mike Smith only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: Netware is dying.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

Netware Admin leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of Netware Admin. How many users of ConsoleOne are there? Let's see. The number of Netware Admin versus ConsoleOne posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 ConsoleOne users. Corel Netware posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of ConsoleOne posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of Corel Netware. A recent article put Novell Netware at about 80 percent of the Netware market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 Netware users. This is consistent with the number of Netware Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of Word Perfect, abysmal sales and so on, Corel is going out of business and will probably be taken over by Novell who sell another troubled OS. Now Novell is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.

All major surveys show that Netware has steadily declined in market share. Novell is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Netware is to survive at all it will be among OS dilettante dabblers. Netware continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Netware is dead.

    Fact: Netware is dying

I've been playing with Gnome 2 for a while now, and I must admit it is starting to feel like a stable release.

There are a few things that I have mixed feelings about though. The default WM is switching to Metacity, which doesn't have the power and configurability of Sawfish, and that is symptomatic of the general reduction in configurability.

Someone, somewhere has decided that configurability === complexity, and that a bewildering array of choices is too many for a newbie. This appears to have been translated into a general 'dumbing down' of the interface.

I can no longer tell Sawfish to remember my window sizes. The Gnome Panel can no longer swallow applications, so all of those WM applets are now useless to me. I can't run the Afterstep clock applet!

I guess it is the applications job to remember what window size I last used, and to remember it without me telling the WM to do so, but they don't - not even Nautilus2 remembers it's window sizes - every time it opens a new window which is slightly less than 1/4 of my screen size.

Overall, this is probably a good thing. People should be writing their applications to remember UI things, and having the WM remember those probably makes them lazy, but I can see a bit of pain in my future with Gnome 2, until these issues are solved and Gnome 3 is released, perhaps.

At least Gnome 2 does seem somewhat snappier than Gnome 1.4, and the styling is better, especially with anti-aliasing available throughout.
