And I would hardly call what ESRI uses to store data, MSAccess, an "enterprise database".
I think long term research between the Toshiba idea and Pebble Bed would be required to determine which one is better, if that can be determined. However research into Fusion is really what is necessary for the long term. A H3 Fusion reactor would produce no significant radiation, however that would require mining the moon.
Since YAST has been open sourced, why not use it and modify it for your use rather then your present system? For that matter, why Anaconda to Debian that Progeny has and is developing?
I don't understand why they do not send a mylar blimp, (folded of course) that they could activate (inflate). I am sure that they could come up with something to operate in the thin atmosphere, but stay aloft with little effort.
When you can download an album or a song for.99cents a track and burn them without issue, and without going to the store, what benifit do you have going down to Sam Goody if the CD's they sell you there are DRM?
No, this will drive people to use iTunes even more.
Your B5 reference was the first thing I thought of when I read this article, after of course the shiver finished running down my spine. For the patriots here, I offer this quote:
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Ben Franklin 1759
If this helps lower the cost of high speed access, I am all for it. If AMD were not making chips, we would still be paying $600 for a PII 300. Competition is good.
Science
Daily is reporting today that UCLA chemists have found a new method for
producing Carbon Nanoscrolls. It appears to be a cheaper alternative to Nanotubes. Edit: I see a previous AC poster mentioned this briefly. Well, this expands on it a bit.
UCLA chemists report in the Feb. 28 issue of Science a room-temperature
chemical method for producing a new form of carbon called carbon nanoscrolls.
Nanoscrolls are closely related to the much touted carbon nanotubes but have
significant advantages over them, said Lisa Viculis and Julia Mack, the lead
authors of the Science article and graduate students in the laboratory of Richard
B. Kaner, UCLA professor of chemistry and biochemistry.
You can get a decent internal reader that will fit in a 3.5 bay for $20 - $30, and it will be SO much more useful in the long term. This way, you will not have to burn a disk for a 1mb file you want to share. 32MB SM cards are as cheap as $10. Not as cheap as a CD, but a LOT smaller and more convenient for smaller files
Since the visibility of a OS in the offices of the members of the board is key to its acceptance within the company, do you think that developing and promoting a desktop Linux, easy enough so that even CEO's can use it, should be a priority for the Linux community, and should getting CEO's to try a fully developed Linux desktop environment also be part of that priority?
Frankly, it is just not that hard to fix a hardware problem considering everything is modular. As for a software problem, well, there is always Format:c
Did anyone else notice the "MS, We have the way out" ad at the end of the article? Was it there before? Makes me wonder if MS isn't looking for these types of articles and buying ad placement after the fact.

Mozilla 1.0, OpenOffice 1.0, now Vorbis 1.0. This year should be considered a watershed year for open source software. It is great to see things coming together like this.

This may sound hard to believe, but some people actually prefer legal music and software.

What was so lacking in other file systems that you felt compelled to write your own? How do you think yours compares with the others?

Any plans for a new novel including Beowulf Schaeffer?

Real men and women only program in assembly. ;)
It is a shame that Stars Supernova has not found a publisher. It is ready to go, and seems as good if not better then MOO3.

To mention Kevin Mitnick in the same vein as Dimitry Sklyarov is obscene.
I am more interested in the LEP products that Cambridge Display Technology is working on with DuPont and Seiko Epson.
Ummm, what about K12? http://k12ltsp.org/
