The maxim I always use is: The company that holds your account never needs to ask you for your password since they already have it.

I would add: Often the employees of the company don't have access to the password because it is encrypted on their end. But the institution can change or reset your password without knowing the old password. This is usually preceded by a manual check performed by customer service over the phone to ensure you are really you. They might also ask you to come into the bank and provide ID.

Because a common "genetic fingerprint" was found between two species does not necessarily mean they have a common ancestor -- that statement is supported only if you are already assuming the theory of evolution is true.

Why can intelligent design not have used similar mechanisms amongst different species? That would be intelligent choice -- to re-use i.e. a special cell works well here, and also over there. The two species don't have to be related by a common ancestor if you are assuming the theory of creationism is true.

I can see how the link is made for the theory of evolution. However I can also a link for creationism. In my opinion it's a tie -- both sides can share it. The discovery can be used to support or refute either side.

However ultimately I think before the final 1.0 version is released, they should fix this problem because the average home user doesn't know to (or understand) about uninstalling the older version first. This might leave a bad taste in user's mouth when they discover Firefox is acting buggier on their Windows box compared to IE (ack!). I think it is the responsbility of the Mozilla developers to find some kind of automatic fix to this problem if they plan for 10 million downloads (or whatever the big number was) of the 1.0 final release.

The article just feels really weird, like they might not be considering the obvious, in favour of some great discovery instead. I mean, it sounds like a ploy to make the skeletons seem like they're from a different evolutionary species or something.

It's a bit of a catch-22: for one browser to exist, everybody involved will have to make concessions; nobody is making concessions because they are still in a browser war. For only one (type of) browser to exist, I believe human nature dictates somebody will have to win this war, rather than everybody making concessions.

From the article: Along the way, Firefox is fast becoming the browser of choice for anyone fed up with all the nasty things polluting the Web (pop-ups and viruses and spyware, oh my!).

However XP Service Pack 2 has taken a big bite out of many security, spyware, etc types of issues that formerly plagued Microsoft's IE browser. That said, users on other versions of Windows do not benefit from these new features.

Going forward, I would say that Firefox has more of a fight on its hands, now that Microsoft is starting to listen to the browser crowds.

I went strictly Firefox about seven months ago, and for the last few months have not even had the IE icon available on my desktop or in my menus. However since XP SP2, I've started moving back to using IE sometimes, because it blocks pop-ups, ActiveX controls, etc. Of course Firefox still has many extensions available which I (not the average user, but a developer user) have fallen in love with. However from the average Windows XP user's point of view, why would they switch to Firefox when Microsoft just made IE more secure for them and blocked annoying popups for them? It's definitely going to be harder to market those Mozilla features now that they doen't represent the edge over IE (XP SP2) anymore.

And how long can we breed the "best" children before the best become so far ahead of the worst, that the worst no longer have any "value" to society at all?

How many of those people, after a few months of frustration or even less time, are going to either upgrade to a non-crippled Win XP, or even pirate one that allows them to connect to other computers. I won't be surprised if this goes the way of MS Bob (to use an over-used analogy). The main problem with this is some users don't know what they need until it's too late. Microsoft is pulling the wool over people's eye with this stupid Starter Edition software.

Do they offer a Starter Ed. of MS Office, or do they still expect you to shell out full price for the Office suite to run on your crippled OS? Maybe someone else can answer that. I'm too angry right now to look it up

Kudos to them ... they're trying their best to serve the best of both worlds: their own, and the Open Source community. Maybe it doesn't look like it's giving as much control to some developers as they want, but it's better than nothing.
