I haven't read Return of the King in a while, but I did read the Two Towers about a year ago. I was under the impression that the combatants at Helm's Deep were not aware the Ents were coming. It was a relief they did, but the combatants thought there was no one coming to their rescue (or at least that's how I remember it.)
I always told them "No" when paying in cash, but when paying with credit card, I always wondered if they wouldn't just somehow get the information from that and submit it to their "catalog" database.
Maybe some entrepeneurs(sp) or small businessmen will pipe in here and let me know if that sort of information (e.g. billing address) is accessible when swiping the Mastercard, VISA, Amex, etc. Billing address is asked for quite often when buying online.
Is there any law (U.S.) that says they can't use any of that information, if accessible, for tracking purposes? Maybe they figure that enough people pay with credit card or check (which also has you address on it) that they don't need to ask because they can get it another way. Just a thought.
Better yet. How about taking all of the contents of the junk mail (minus the remittance envelope) and tear it up. Then put it in the "no postage required" remittance envelope and mail it back to them. It will definitely get back to the sender. And if you put some extra weight in it, I believe they have to pay a little extra just to get their junkmail back.
I do this with all of my junkmail. My goal is to make them pay twice for sending me anything unsolicited.
I agree with your points about being taken forcibly.
I think my thought pattern around my post was that the indentured servants, although they chose to enter the "lifestyle", they are considered property by those to whom they are indentured (at least that's how it was put on the page I linked. It's on the Internet, so I know it's true). I don't know whether or not the same belief regarding people as property is held in the modern situation (Vietnam) that you mentioned.
I may have been stretching the conventional definition of the word "slave", but depending on the viewpoint from which your looking at it, I think it could apply.
So it cant get on my machine, then it will ddos me
Well if it comes down to being a victim of a ddos, or helping in it, maybe you should purposely allow it to infect you. There might not be an outage if you're just helping the ddos of someone else. At least your machine may still function, internet-ly speaking.
Of course, I'm not really crazy (or even serious) about this idea, but helping an attacker (in this case, the worm) may keep his gaze from fixing on you. Then wait till others have defeated the worm and implement their solution. Run with whoever is winning the battle. I would paraphrase from the great Dark Helmet: Evil will win, because Good is dumb.
However, there is nobility in fighting the good fight. Stand up to the oppressive worm, even if it defeats you. Others may succeed where you may fail.
I think I just wrote this to use the phrase "internet-ly speaking"
I did. They said no. "Not a corporate standard." I guess I can see their point. Since there is not a trained support staff to support the server, the company would be relying on me, or would have to shell out extra dollars to diversify its support staff. If some business-critical function was put in place on the linux server, and I decided to quit in order to take up my lifelong dream of being a turnip farmer, then the company would be put in a tough position. Its much safer for them to insist that the machine be a Win machine which can be supported by the multitude of MCSEs in the environment.
What about indentured servants. Not really relevant to you point about MS, but more so regarding the "no one chose to be a slave". info here http://www.stratfordhall.org/ed-servants.htm
I've had both Cable and DSL (in that order). With my Cable Modem, the Cable Guy came to my apartment and plugged in the hardware. However, he couldn't even get the "signal" light to light up, which meant the modem wasn't even gettin recognized by the Cable company. Apparently they have to enter the some number (either a serial number, or MAC address, or something) by hand a couple of days before the install and someone had inverted a couple of numbers. Since he couldn't even get the modem to work, I told him not to bother installing anything on my computer. He had me sign, and he just told me to call tech support to get it fixed. Apparently the rest of the setup was left as an exercise for the student. A couple of days later, tech support was able to straighten out the issue.
With DSL, I decided to do the self-install method. I wanted to connect my Router to the DSL bridge, but didn't have the password. The only documentation (yep, I had to read the documentation) said that during the software install process, I would be prompted to register in order to get a login name and password. Sure enough, after removing the Router from the setup and installing the software, I was prompted to create a login and password. After that, I could put my router back in the mix and use the login name and password I had created.
There was not an apparent easier way to obtain a login name and password, but in hindsight, I think I could probably fake my way through customer support and have them create it for me by telling them that the registration program didn't work.
What about Luna? Is the Moon still within the Earth's magnetic sheild? It is many times farther out than the ISS. We sent a couple of people there, or so they tell me. Did they have any adverse health problems? I would think that the shielding used on that trip was probably not as advanced as todays sheilding.

But doesn't that make war too easy? Politicians will be more than willing to go to war if they can promise none of their voters or voters' sons will have to die for it. If there is a cost associated with it (voters' lives), then the politicians won't be as anxious to send in "vlad the impaler" and "tazbot".
