I think that the more specific the moderation statitistics, the more prone the system would be to abuse from reverse engineering. The more specific statistics would allow people to develop causal relationships between their actions and the weight of karma value increases and decreases.
A vague value scheme (one of 5 or 6 words to descibe your karma) gives an overall impression, but does tell you whether meta-moderating or getting a post modded up as under-rated will boost your karma more. It does not let you find out that maybe only replying, but never meta-moderating, is not as efficient only meta-moderating, or whatever.
If the algorithm for assigning karma is "closed-source", it would make sense that the values returned from it should yield as little possible information for deconstructing it.
Of course, if it was open-source, I'm sure the community could find ways of optimizing it such that abuses could be nearly eliminated.
I don't see how people can determine whether or not there are plot holes until the final chapter is concluded. Sure, there might be something you don't understand or that you think is wrong right now, but that could very well be explained in the third movie.
Both movies have dealt with "synthetic reality", and if the Zion world is indeed a second-level matrix, nothing that has been shown could not have been arbitrarily constructed by an n-level reality.
I remember reading an interview with the one of the Wachowski bros about a year or so before the Matrix Reloaded came out. He said the reason they filmed both movies at nearly the same time and the reason they were releasing them with only a few months separation is that the fans would be very upset if they didn't because of the way Reloaded ended. Going into Reloaded, I was expecting the cliffhanger, but what was more surprising (for me) was that the end of the movie left the storyline at a place where it is possible that nothing shown so far took place in "reality", if it exists.
Doesn't Apple use the lowercase i convention in its naming schemes (iMac, iPod, etc)? Initially I thought it was odd that Microsoft would create a product with a name that sounded so much like an Apple product. When I heard someone at work mention the story about the iLoo, they didn't mention MicroSoft right away, and I assumed it was Apple.
This kinda reminded me of someone at work who uses the "prevent copying or forwarding" option in Lotus Notes whenever she wants to bad-mouth someone at work. Last time she sent me a ripe e-mail, I hit the PrtScn button and pasted the picture of her email in a response email. For some reason she stopped emailing me. I sometimes wonder if she thought the option would also somehow magically keep me from letting people read it over my shoulder.
I received all three movies on DVD as a gift over a year ago.
They were packaged seperately and there is a "suprising" lack of content inside the dvd cases (just the DVD actually). The picture label on the DVDs appear valid, as does the outside of the cases. There are numerous icons on the cases and the DVDs (Paramount, Dolby, the DVD Video icon). There's even a barcode on the top reverse-side of the case.
Some oddities: Red letters on the back of the case saying "Sony Playstation 2 compatible". While the language is English, the subtitles are "English, Chinese, and Malay". And finally, when I put the disc in, it doesn't hit any sort of menu, but immediately starts playing the movie.
My guess has been that these are just VHS versions copied onto DVD (because the sound is absolutely horrendous). The real challenge is going to be trying to buy the real versions and switching them without the gift-giver becoming wise.
This convinced me that the problem is real, that it is hampering the advancement of learning--and that it could even lead to the unseating of the US as the center of the learned world.
Many submitters have posted similar comments about the possible shift of technilogical/scientific knowledge to somewhere other than the US. Anyone got any predictions on where the next big technology/science concentration will be? Will it shift to Canada, which still seems to embrace foreigners to its country? Does Europe have anything to offer? How about China? (Looks like they may put a man in space this year).
Also, what do you think are the ingredients for a country to be a successful technology powerhouse? "Loose ethics" in their laws? (cloning-banned countries will probably not be at the forefront of cloning technology). How about diverse acceptance of individuals in scientific professions (Think of how many great foreign scientists might be turned away by the US, or how many great women scientists have not been allowed to contribute in certain fields in some Muslim-dominated countries). Others examples?
A reliable independant source told me that the Raelians expect to have created a baby hurricane in the next few days. Aliens gave them the technology to control the weather so that they could water their "Clone-fields".
Marduk sent the four winds to cleave Tiamat, according to Zecharia Sitchin (the 12th planet). Supposedly the Earth formed from one half of the planet Tiamat and the asteroid belt formed from the other.
But from the article, I think that they're saying that we have a couple planets too many (not actually missing one), if our computer simulations are to be correct. Computer simulations using the theories of Solar System formation are saying that a couple of the outer planets should not be there, which implies that our current theories are wrong (or slightly off).
I agree. Especially around the eyes and nose, the Ents reminded me of Labyrinth muppets when I saw them.
One thing I wondered is why the Ents were all shorter than the rest of the forest. Do the ones that are more "tree-like" than "ent-like" grow taller because they don't move about?

I'm told, by the person reading over my shoulder, that the Aboriginies of Australia believed they came from the water (though they can't direct me to a source of reference). Anyone Aboriginie (sp) slashdotters out there have a reference?
I clicked that URL too. Boy, I'm gullible.
However, I clicked it with Mozilla on my Linux box, so all I got was the first page w/picture, and no sound.
Being glutton for punishment, I decided that it was probably "optimized for Internet Explorer".
I tried with iexplorer on a win98. Now that's funny!
I know a few people at work tomorrow who are going to load their pants when I tell them to bring that URL up. (Unless of course they already knew about it like some of you./'ers apparently did.)
My girlfriend used a headhunter to apply for a not-IT job, and was turned down. A short while later she had an opportunity to talk to the would-be employer and they said they would've loved to have hired her, but the headhunter was way too pushy.
The headhunter called the prospective employer numerous times every day trying to pressure them to make a decision and lied to the employer by saying that his client was currently weighing a couple of offers, "So they'd better hurry and make up their minds". The prospective employer told my gf that they would've hired her if she hadn't used that headhunter.

Your preposition is dangling?

How about moving it to Cuba, covering it with an artificial lake, and destroying part of the receiver in a fight with Boromir?
Yes, puns are bohring
You can try the imitations, but A1 is da best. I think Al Gore invented Steak sauce too.

That quickly turned me away from headhunters.
