  1. Re:Very smart move on Strict German Computer Crime Law Now in Effect · · Score: 1

Godwin's Law is: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one." Since Germany is the topic, and no comparison to Nazis or Hitler was involved, then no invocation of said law occurred. No, this is not a case of Godwin's law. Germany managed to start one world war without the Nazis!

This guy is really one of a kind. I mean, most people I know who use windows don't give a damn about the legal status of the software they're using! I mean, talk about free software to the average windows user and they will tell you that all their software came free of charge anyway.

Even on a job (for a company which doesn't exist anymore anyway) when I was setting up a computer I was given a set of CD-Rs and the hint to google for office activation codes...

There sure are better alternatives to PHP in the OSS sector! PHP IMHO is a nice toy but nothing I would use in a commercial project.

A soon to be totally OS sollution is of course JAVA with Apache and Servlets/JSP. Just take a look at Sun's website, they have a lot of information, examples and tutorials available. Also, Java is totally plattform independent and easily installed on Windows, if that remains your development system.

Another, more recent sollution would be Ruby on Rails, which has some realy niffty features.

And no, not a dumb question at all! One hint: If you got the time, just download the OSS you are considering ang play around with it, that's probably more usefull than my dumb answer. ;-)

Otherwise you'll have years and years to wait for a reply from anything, especially given the nearest possibly populated planets are what, hundreds of light years away?

Chances are, FTL is impossible. Fact is *we* do communicate with radio

They use it to take pseudo-colour images of things like x-ray and gamma-ray bursts

    Detecting x-rays and gamma-rays with a radio telescope? I don't think so

It's true there are lots of possible research projects with more or less emidiate benefits for humanity, but I don't think radio astronomy is the reason they don't happen. There are other areas already mentioned (and the US are not the only country spending ludicrous amounts of money on their military) which eat up heaps of money without much noticeable gain of knowledge.
