Well I am happy there isn't a broadcasting flag anymore but what about firewire ports on cable boxes?
If you look at the ruling "FCC Eases Digital TV Transition for Consumers."(PDF) it states that all digital cable boxes must have a firewire port. This port is used to control the box and record from it. Now this has been in effect for a while now, although it takes alot of effort and showing your cable company this pdf article to get them to give you a box that has a firewire port and that port is enabled. My concern is the ruling seems to also removes the FCC's power in this area as well.
And the worst part is MythTV just started supporting recording over firewire...
I must say that I find this very strange. Infact I am almost speechless. First of all evolution does not negate the existence of G-d. All it does is negate inaccurate account of creation in judaeo-christian religious texts.
The thing I most find disturbing though is the fact that these people most likely have nice cars, live in nice houses, have indoor plumbing. These are all things that are possible because of science. I think everyone wishes there was an after life but I think these people are no more sane then Scientologists.
Well one because we can't fight the all mighty dollar. For every person who would actually talk to their congressmen and senators the RIAA and MPAA give those same congressmen and senators enough money to buy 10 people's vote.
But I don't think they can stop this kind of thing for ever. And i2p isn't a total safe guard. Given enough want by the government they can track you down. i2p is just a way to make the cost of finding you sufficiently higher to deter most people from figuring out it was you.
Another thing is that in the case of a child molester or terrorist I would argue that the government would need to show probable cause before they just tap your network. So although the music and movie downloaders are doing illegal activities there is no real probable cause to tap my internet over yours. But in the case of child molester or terrorist there should be other suspicions that give them probable cause for a tap.
Now you could say that using i2p is enough probable cause but I don't think that would stand up in court. There are lots of reasons for wanting anonymity and so long as not all of them are illegal then you can't really outlaw it. Thats why bittorrent hasn't been outlawed and why you can still buy bongs in the USA when weed is illegal. So although you still can't do illegal things with i2p, just using it shouldn't damn you.
Then they will make a polymorphic protocol that makes it hard to track. Some one will figure something out and we will all be talking about that crazy law that didn't work.
Just wait till everyone is using i2p. Then the RIAA can't really do anything about it.
On that note I agree with the assertion this letter raises that the RIAA and similar groups are only intrested in the law when it suits them. When it doesn't they either disregard it or spend tons of money to buy our congressmen so they can have it changed.
Bah you know what let them "lead" the tech industry. Because the only thing that will happen is their wages will go up. When their wages equal somthing close to ours then they loose their edge.
Frankly the only thing I want to see is USA being self sufficient. With that who cares whats going on.
Also although we are getting screwed by wages I think the next gold rush will be space and we are ahead of everyone else in that area. Although we aren't ahead by as much anymore I think we still will be a leader in this area.
Funny this got posted now but lastnight i was watching an episode of Penn & Teller: Bullshit!. The episode focus was on Safety Hysteria. One of the items they mentioned was our fear of Brain Cancer from a Cellphone. Anyway the jist of the experts was that the waves produced from the cellphone where two big to damage DNA. Hench no damaged DNA then no cancer.
I belive you can patent improvements to existing ideas. Also why would they loose a patent war? True they might loose some patent battles but over all the amount of patents they would have would give them bargaining chips to license other patents.
I don't think that really could happen at Microsoft. Although they are big there are alot of companies out there that can compete against them for hiring. If they where to add a clause like that into their contact I would belive it would cause them to gain very loyal workers but the best and the brightest will never go for it and just get a job at another company for just as much money. So Microsoft will get tons of idiots who will never leave.
I mean I know what Ajax is but where in the world did that term come from? And it doesn't seem like until that story on slashdot no one was even using the term.
I would however like some links to sites that talk about how to do this kind of code and do it well because from what i know about javascript there are alot of pitfalls.
You know I was thinking about this today before I even read this story. I was wondering why the EFF doesn't just register all the possible patents that come from any open source program. I bet if they did that and then turned around made the patents "open source" (free to use) but restricted the use to anyone not one a special EFF blacklist. That way the EFF gains alot of leverage and I bet they would slowly built up enough patents on important software advances to really hurt the big companies trying to screw us over with patents. I say use thier own laws against them.
I am so sick of everything being about "Protecting the Children". Why is it we spend like 90% percent of our lives trying to protect 10% of someone else life? This is all the parents Job anyway to monitor what their childrens what and play. The greatest irony is that the older generations live in a time when lynching African Americans was okay. So even though it will warp my mind to play GTA 3 watching ethnic minorities being brutally murdered apparently has no long term effect. Oh you say your faimly memebers in the older generations never witnessed that? Well take your pick of horrible things that happend around those times like the Vietnam war or World War 2.
Don't get me wrong I don't think kids should see everything on TV but it isn't my job or the Government Job to do that.

I don't really agree that using XML is overkill. Infact I think xml is great for just about everything. What causes most problems is the code used to process XML into something you want to use. When you use XML it gives you the ablity to later have another application use that same data alot quicker. With a flat file you would need write up a way for your new app to interpret your old file format. I do agree that coders have to be aware at the overhead of the XML processing libs they choose to use however it is just as easy to regex simple xml.
Is it just me or do you think they are going to be the big Linux desktop of the future? I mean Redhat does have the name that everyone knows as linux. However Novell has slowly been buying all the cool linux desktop stuff. They bought Xandros and Suse and those are two huge players in the Linux Desktop market.
We seem to be going in circles. The government is set up in such a way that laws can't be created with out the representation of the people being involed. If these people inact bad laws. We as the people should not elect them again. So the proper time to bring up "what ifs" is only with the legislators. Either when you are trying to get a law passed or get one struck down. Courts deal with facts and should not have to deal with fictional possibilities resulting from the law.
Uh no one did, and the courts ruled correctly. I don't have a problem with this case I have a problem with the Idea stated above that anyone should be able to challange everything even if they are not victim. In this particular case I think it was a valid lawsuit.
Doesn't matter if they didn't read it, thats their fault and the fault of the people who elected them. The courts shouldn't have to correct things that people failed to read. The point of the courts is to strick down laws that blatantly against the constitution. Now the Patriot act my fall into category but like I said before I don't think it is to much trouble to have someone who WAS actully harmed to be the petitioner. Otherwise your just arguing theory and "what ifs". In a way though I understand your feelings that you think the court needs to help out because you feel that we have lost control of our representatives. To some extent I agree but I always find it odd that the people who say that part of the government (the legislative) isn't working turn right around and want another part of the government that really shouldn't be involed unless absolutely necessary.

I'll just use my CherryOS system to hack into their computers just like in that movie... Hackers.
I wonder how strong their plexiglass computer is.
Why does the movie suck?
I hope the 10 people who can actually afford this enjoyed the article.
