Um... you make it sound like the Laws are comming out the thin air. Any _bad_ law was voted on and passed what ever government body is required to at what ever level of government. So mabey you try to stop it before it becomes law. And in a legal sense you can Sue for your children or spouse.
And your right you shouldn't have to sit around waiting to be taken advantage of. So you should get the law changed in the correct matter.
The courts should only be used in the worst of laws. And if the law is that bad someone must have been hurt by it.
p.s. They can take my Xbox but they can never take my freedom
Or every wacko in the Country will come out challenging every law on the books. I agree certain laws suck but I don't think it is to much to ask to find someone who actully has been harmed.
It seems like the resellers are pissed about the apple owned stores. I don't know if charging their own stores less is against the law but if it is, thats nuts. They own the store and the product. Well you be the judge.
TellOnApple.org suggests Apple shareholders demand Apple Computer answer these questions at its upcoming shareholders meeting on April 22, 2004 in Cupertino, California:
1. Is Apple Computer the subject of any governmental probes or criminal investigations?
2. Do the company owned retail stores pay the same price for Apple products as independent Apple resellers when purchasing the same products directly from Apple?
3. Do the uncovered invoices show what the company owned retail stores actually pay for Apple products? Do the company owned retail stores actually pay $2.70 for Apple Care Extended Warranties while most resellers pay approximately $118 to $244 for the same product?
4. Are the company owned retail stores actually profitable if they paid the same price for Apple products as independent Apple resellers?
5. Is Apple misleading shareholders as to the company owned retail stores profitability?
6. Apple has always stated that there was a level playing field between the company owned retail stores and the independent Apple resellers. How does Apple explain the pricing, promotions, and allocation discrepancies between the two?
7. Have Apple sales at the independent Apple resellers increased or decreased year over year? If they have decreased, is Apple simply moving sales from the independent Apple resellers to Apple direct?
8. Five down, 95 to go was Apple's main reason for opening the company owned retail stores. "Apple has about 5 percent market share," Jobs said in 2001. He noted that most of the other 95 percent of computer buyers "don't even consider us." Why has Apple's marketshare decreased instead of growing? And what benefit is there to Apple to eliminate the independent Apple resellers?
9. Has Apple ever intended to put the independent Apple resellers out of business? Would this bring any benefit to Apple or Apple's customers? Is there a future for independent Apple resellers?
10. When Apple first opened its retail stores, it publicly recognized that working with its existing lineup of independent resellers would be a priority. Why has this changed?
11. In Apple's ethics document posted on their website, Apple states, "In some cases, the law may also view our resellers as our competitors when we are actually competing for the same types of customers in the marketplace." Why is Apple competing against their independent resellers? Why is Apple offering special prices to consumers, which can be lower than the independent resellers cost?
I don't think so, If you remember the Lexmark Printer case. They got ruled against because they added a chip to their ink cartridges for the express purpose of stoping people from using 3rd party ink cartridges. When a 3rd party started selling them Lexmark claimed that they violated the DMCA because the chip on the ink cartridge was copied. I think that in a lawsuit between Microsoft and Codeweavers that case would be sited. I also think that if Codeweavers was in trouble all the large companies that stand to loose alot would help their legal fund (ie. IBM) And also Lexmark wasn't found to be a Monoply. So I think they can in theory they can require Active X or what ever but since they are expressly checking for Wine I think it falls in similar circumstances as the Lexmark case.
Well for what ever reason Microsoft did this, I am guessing it is alittle late to try to stop wine. I am sure the guys at Codeweavers have already started thinking how they will either trick Microsoft (in the case where you own the software) or replace Microsoft. Hell Codeweavers could just tell people the names of the Windows files they need and I am sure people will be trading them on a p2p somewhere.
I disagree with the part about useless eye candy. I think useless eye candy is great so long as it doesn't take away from the ablity to work. For example I have a Thinkpad Laptop with a graphics card in it. In my normal day to day use I don't even use the 3D ablity of this card. However If I could have it do all kinds of cool eye candy stuff with out slowing down my computer then all the better. I mean hell I paid for it.
Like they say in South Park "Simpsons did it". I recall Mr. Burns going to the Mayo clinic and finding out he has every disease known and unknown to man, it's just that they are all existing and trying to get through the door together it's just that they are all existing and trying to get through the door together in something the doctor's call "Three Stooges Syndrome".
First if you use IVTV it does record mpeg. But besides that nuv is just an encapsulation for various diffrent encoding formats. So even though it says nuv the underlying encoding format is usally either mpeg2 or mpeg4. Now if you want to view them on other platforms mplayer has a patch to play nuv files. Also you could use winmyth to play them on windows. And if you want to easily convert nuv files to divx you can use nuvexport.
Or you could play them through mythweb with mythstreamtv.
Thats why said it is the near future. Wine is reaching a point where most of the functions that are used in windows programs have been mapped to their linux equivalent. Thus wine will work almost perfectly for every app unless they do something that is atypical. And just because you couldn't get wine to run doesn't mean it doesn't work.
I know lots of people (including me) who run everything linux except one Windows PC for gaming. There is no reason you would need KDE to make this work. I am not really saying that they are idiots for porting KDE. However I don't see a whole lot of use for it. And looking into the future, wine is getting to the point where the norm will be that Windows apps will run by default and only programs that do strange stuff will have problems. So I stand by my claim that there isn't really a use for this. They might as well have ported KDE to a toaster oven atleast then you could have pizza bagles.
There is a diffrence between a story that could possibly happen but has a crappy budget and one that has a crappy budget and has no chance of happening. For example Dr. Who had like no budget and did fine. I think the story lines are pretty good. However with Star Trek the orginal series I felt like there were to many wacky planets. I mean it had some good qualities, it did spawn TNG but overall its more fantasy then scifi
I like all Star Trek shows execpt the first one. I don't see why everyone loves it. I mean it was okay but come on going to the planet of the Nazis or what ever. The places they explored made no sense. Hell even with the crazy time travel Enterprise is still more believable then the orginal series.
First the CAN-Spam act does stop spam. The problem is it stops spam from people who follow the law. That usally means though they are a legal bulk email provider (like when you sign up to a news letter from a stie). The people who could care less for the law aren't following the CAN-SPAM act and thats why SPAM is going up. So before we throw the baby out with the bath water, we really need to understand that just a law won't stop spam.
I think the intresting thing will be when people break the broadcasting flag. Although there will be cards out there with out them. I think that the next source will be the break of that. Because then every TV show you record can still be shared and All the past ones are on DVDs and we can already rip them. The only thing that may change is the distrubtion network. It will go from bittorrent to exeem or what ever. And eventually there will be no way to tell who is downloading what because of encryption. And who do you think will win? I envision a future where people make fan base shows (much like current flash cartoons) with 3D software that makes it look real. Then we don't need any NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX. We will go back to a time when we entertained each other around campfires telling stories.
Yeah I know, I hope the book doesn't have these in it, there are alot of hacks for firefox that makes it faster but they also are irresponsible because they put undo strain on websites.

Not that I don't agree with the idea the firefox is taking a chuck out of IE's market share but how exactly does O'Reilly releasing 2 books on firefox equal a "end of lazy IE-only scripted webpages"?
I guess you could call it unique. Alot of companies like IBM and Sun though let their workers work on open source software. Truth be told I think that is a better way to go about it. If you only let them work on open source software you don't have to be worried about what it does (and thus don't have to watch it) because your not going to sell it and you get PR points
20% of their time is their own projects. The work week is 5 days long. 1 day constitutes 20% of their work week. It doesn't take a google Phd to figure out that most likey they have a day you can work on it.

eh well any virus in a fake windows download most likely won't do much under wine if it even runs

Yeah cause so many KDE users are saying if only my windows box ran KDE I would drop this crappy Linux Kernel

You would think mirrordot would spring for the extra cash to to get a subscription so they can see the story early and mirror links

With such convincing arguments and irrefutable proof you present it is a wonder why this post has not been modded higher.
No because your still wasting the web servers resources.
