Just to agree there is a famous quote from a churchman Martin Niemoller which goes something like
When they came for the communists I said nothing When they came for the socialists I said nothing When they came for the jews I said nothing When they came for me there was no-one left to say anything
(from memory -the full quote is a bit longer)
It basically means that if you close your eyes to "badness" because it does directly affect you eventually it will and there will be no-one to protect you
(Martin Niemolloer began as a supporter of Hitler - not a nazi but a supporter)
one thing I find telling is the attitude towards overall design
In gnome2 there is a definite approach that the architecture and feel should be "designed" so that it is sensible, while JDE seems to just bolt on feature after feature as in MS
For an example please see the vfolder thread on the free desktop mailing list.
I have a theory
1. I get about one or two a day to my home email address. I know nobody that uses outlook/outlook express.
2. I am subscribed to several Linux mailing lists (tag,RH, gnome etc)
3. I have had a few with spoofed addresses like webmaster@gnome.org and various other linux notables that post to these lists)
So there must be quite a few work only subscribers that use outlook to peruse these lists.
Bloody outlook - even gets you if you stick to linux sites
dont like to flame but does the thrase "fuck off and die" mean anything
Clue - answer to any critism is NOT "can you code"
Linux is moving out of the geek realm
Oh - why do I bother!!!
excuse my ignorance - but can anyone nme me one QT/.KDE app which is classed as best of breed
off the the top of my head I can quote the following gnome (not gtk) apps which are commonly regarded as clearly THE best linux apps in their category
evolution
galeon
gnumeric
Have to say I think you've been a bit unlucky, both with the rooting and response on forums.
Personally I ave always found the majority of linux people to be helpful and friendly even when I was a newbie
Programs
The vast majority of programs tend to be command line or system programs, which is why they dont appear in your menus. Examples are ls(list files), locate(fast find), find, grep (search for text.
Swap
Linux uses swap differently to w9x and probably mac but similar to NT derived kernels.
It swaps programs in and out of memory and the swap partition so that programs execute more efficiently.
all programs are in one of/bin,/bin,/usr/bin,/usr/sbin
libraries live in/lib and/usr/lib
a few good lists to subscribe to

If you have the full set of discs you should have a docs cd which has several guides and books on the cd, several are very useful

Co-incidentally I have just done a re-install of my RH7.3 box with self-compiled gnome2 and exim
Took about two hours, most of which spent waiting for rpm's to install
(reason being wierd things were happening, and in todays climate better safe than sorry)
Basically what most people are seeing as Linux problems are KDE problems, thankfully I use gnome.
/etc or ~
/usr/share
/etc is a bit strange, but bin for binary(executable) lib for libraries sbin for system binaries boot for boot up files makes a lot of sense
In gnome all config files are in
with the exception that some specific types of configuration data files are in
On the subject of cryptic names I dont really see the problem
admittedly
Oooh - this is a seriously sore point
Access 97 has a critically data deletion bug
When a access97 db is developed on a machine with access2000 installed it uses libraries from 2000 (go figure)
This results in data DELETION on any update query when run on a machine without access2000 installed
Try finding this on the knowledge base
(OK if you type in type library you may find it - obvious????)
And microsofties say linux is cryptic?

The entire article has a false precis
Orwell was not writing about the threat of technology - he was writing about the abuse of technology AND media
The book seems fairly spot on to me
Can anyone see any politician who espouses any ideas outside the current "consensus" even getting airplay nowadays?
Easy - here
crap - you use kde too much
How many excuses can KDEers think of (yes I know this will be moderated to oblivion cause I do not worship at the alter of KDE)

Could not be more wrong Gnome2 was released exactly 5 days after it was scheduled to ship
What the reviewer has done is done is very simple
Ignored release notes
Ignored Various READMES
Ignored known gotchas
The reason galeon wont work is that the mandrake rpm sounds like it is compiled with nautilus1 support, and nautilus 1 has been clobbered
The one thing loud and clear through all the development process is INSTALL GNOME2 IN A SEPARATE PREFIX!!
Personally I cant think of anything missing with my install of gnome2 (parallel with gnome1.4)
If people cant read release notes they should just pull down ximian RPMs
