Embracing it? Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I don't see them as 'embracing' it. I think what they're doing is a half-assed attempt to make a business, then when it fails blame 'piracy' for it. I mean seriously: If they were really embracing it, they'd make a more serious effort to provide what we really want. Instead, they're still locking it up as if we're all thieves.

I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but if the interent were truely embraced as a media delivery channel, then none of us would be interested in owning a DVD player anymore. The internet is an awesome medium to tell a story on. To be honest, I'm stunned that none of the big name moviemakers have jumped on board and blown us away.

    - I'm an artist. I use a tablet to draw with right now. The ability to draw right on the screen would totally rock. Right now Wacom sells LCD tablets that plug into your VGA port, but they're in the $3,500 range.

    - I attend lots of meetings and drag a laptop around with me. I'd prefer a TabletPC so I can jot sketches along with notes. Right now I use paper and a scanner to do this, I'd like to skip the paper step.

    - I wouldn't mind having a Tablet PC around the house. The tablet form factor is much easier to tote around than the 'laptop-that-doesn't-really-sit-well-on-your-lap' approach.

I don't know if I represent a 'whole big market' or not, but I can tell you that office-life would be easier with them. I'm certain these will start appearing in my office within the next 12 months.

If your customer is willing to add expense and time to block popups or commercials, then it means that you're service isn't as 'in-demand' as you think it is.

I can't help but think about Turner's comments about PVRs. I think it's funny he's willing to call people thieves for skipping commercials even though they spent $200-400 for that capability.

Okay, popups aren't the same. The thing is, though, if they're so disruptive that a user is willing to install an app to put a stop to them, then you're not really providing a service to your customer. (You're also not doing your advertising clients any good...)

Demanding that customers view your popups are not the proper way to handle this situation. Be creative. Cater to the needs of the user.

I'll give you all an example: Affiliate programs. I do lotsa research on the web before I buy expensive items. If somebody can provide me an honest point of view of what their experience is like with a product, and they help me decide to buy it, I'm happy to refer them to whoever I buy the product from. I'm even willing to provide a review for the items I buy so I can make a commission on future sales.

It's a little bit different than popups, isn't it? Cater to the seekers, not the passers by.
