IIRC, you could use the WCII graphics tileset (and maybe the sounds) in FreeCraft, but all actual code was FreeCraft. (There were native FreeCraft tilesets, of course. But they weren't very good. I only used FreeCraft with native tilesets even though I own WCII and Starcraft.)

I'm not sure how that translates legally, but I always thought FreeCraft was a dangerous name for the project.

I haven't looked at the site in a while. They had been making lots of improvments and in some ways the multiplayer games were cooler. You could see a "replay" of the game a la the Civ games.

    My time isn't. :(

Well, if you download this KnoppixMAME iso you can simply boot it up and play the ROM images right off your hard drive. You don't have to install Linux or configure it. It will auto-configure to your system.

Your only two possible time-takers would be if you're not familiar with Linux:

1: and have more than one HDD partition you might have to click on more than one desktop icon ("is it hda1 or hda5?")

2: It may take you a little bit to figure out how to launch XMAME. I didn't RTFA so I don't know if they have a nice GUI frontend or if you need to find it and load or ROM or if you need to run MAME from a command prompt. But you will have to find the ROMs on your HDD from your desktop first, becaus your HDDs aren't mounted until you browse them.

  3. Correction & FTP & SSH on KnoppiXMAME 1.0 Released · · Score: 1

All you have to do is "su - ; apachectl restart", and you're good to go.

Assuming you're at the $ prompt in X you'll need to do this:

    sudo su -

And since it's Debian-based you can use Debian's:

    /etc/init.d/apache start

from the # prompt. Or you shortcut it with:

    sudo /etc/init.d/apache start

    FTP

While we're on the subject, ftp is a bit trickier. This is one way:

    knoppix$ sudo su -
    knoppix# rm /etc/hosts.allow
    knoppix# rm /etc/hosts.deny
    knoppix# passwd knoppix
    knoppix# /etc/init.d/inetd restart

You'll have to confirm the removals, and you'll assign a password to user knoppix so you can log in as that user. You could also create a new user to log into FTP from.

hosts.allow and hosts.deny are symlinked to the read-only image, so if you want to roll your own you'll still have to delete the links and then create new ones from scratch or with cp.

    SSH

    knoppix$ sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start
    knoppix$ sudo passwd knoppix

The start command will create new keys in KNOPPPIX, too. You have to assign knoppix (or root or a new user) a password to be able to log in, of course.

These things can bring an otherwise decent PC to its knees in a hurry.

People complaing about the 1GHz and 2GHz PCs being slow for IE and Word and such, and they're right. Sad.

I also understand that compared to you, I should not call myself a sysadmin ;)

Aw, shucks. But I don't run the whole thing. I just admin 4 /26's on a single router and a few switchs with a hundred or so PCs, a few servers and a couple dozen printers. (For some crazy reason everybody wants their own network printer. I keep telling them in a business a networked HP 2000C is way more expensive than a networked HP 8150DN over the long haul. They even have a 4500C for color, but they still want their own printers, and then they want them on the network. Silly users. But I digress.)

Another thing is that you probably have absolute power over your 8 PCs and DSL, but even though I know I'm the most important person to the end user there is a bureaucracy that demands all sorts of silly things and limits my discretion. There's ups and downs to every situation.

But I wouldn't voluntarily install any adware/spyware/virus magnet like Kazaa wherever I work. Even at home it's banished to an old Pentium 166 with Win95 that's only turned on when I want to use Kazaa. Okay, okay. I put Kazaa Lite on my main PC. But not at work.

    2) Incrementally and slowly add more and more restrictive claims. Auto-update, DRM, etc.
    3) If the people start complaining too much, roll-back to previous claims, which isn't much better.

I think that the problem is that most of the people who were making the insane dollars they were don't want to take on a $30K-$40K job, even if basic administration or technician work will pay the bills.

I was in a similar situation three years ago. In 2000 I had quit two jobs and was looking for something that paid at least $50k and was otherwise palatable for me. I had an interesting and stable job offer, but it was "only for $28k" and I refused it.

I ran though all my money and doubled my debt before I decided I couldn't hold out anymore and got a retail job.

A month or so later I finally landed a tech job again at $30k, way less than I had made two jobs ago and way way less than I thought I was worth. But by then my ego was nonexistent and I was thrilled to be back in the industry.

I later went back to the employer I had been steady with before 2000 because they made it worth my while and were more stable than my $30k job.

An ego is a very expensive thing to have. I'll have all that debt paid of within a year, and next time I'm out of a job I'll take that $28k tech job instead of turning my nose up at it. If you plan ahead (i.e., don't drive expensive cars or carry CC debt) you can easily pay your bills with $28k or even much less.
