the fact that it's their hardware doesn't matter. the fact that it's in the TOS or AUP (same thing really) does. However, an ISP isn't allowed to look at your personal files without permission, so they can never discover a zipped mp3. as for businesses not having rights: they have rights, and should have rights. but not necessarily HUMAN rights. The fact that it is their property doesn't allow them to do just anything with it they want. They are not the police. This also works for (e.g.) real stores: if they suspect I've put something in my bag, and not payed for it, they are not allowed to look in my bag. They will ask if they can, but if I say no, they'll have to get the police or let me go.
I work for an ISP in the netherlands, where we have... privacy laws. Everyone has a right to privacy. it's about time the US had some of those laws too. but americans despise laws. laws are bad. laws may cost big business money.
>Think of it this way, if 99% of the apples in the bunch are rotten, would you spend your time digging around for the good one, or would you just pitch them all.
I'd only chug them all if they were mine. but these were someone elses apples, so it's not theirs to throw away.
>Customers with Websites that do not comply with these simple rules, or who seek to take advantage of the Company unlimited storage or traffic plan...
we have unlimited storage, but up to a limit. That's not very unlimited, is it? it's even worse than having a limit. they can change the limit at will. basically, if they don't like you, your website, or its visitors they can cut you off.
Errr.. e.g. DJ Jurgen definately makes his own music. It may not be my style, and I may not like the music.. but he did write it. DJs do more than just play records.
>It makes a lot more sense than thinking that our complex ecosystem could arise from nothing more than the hydrogen + nuclear fusion that formed the rest of our solar system.
it may explain how life came to earth.. but it only moves the problem to a different planet where life didn't get by panspermia. the problem isn't adressed at all.
Oh... there's probably some countries that won't let the US forget this for the coming 50 years. especially with the eternal 'look who came to the rescue in WW2' attitude coming from a lot of them..
even if it is an option... it will make a user think twice about installing something that isn't M$ certified.. I know (and probably you too) that software is never guaranteed to work.
it could put people off...and you can bet M$ considered this...even if it is not the first goal.
not exactly the same: France only tries to regulate the internet for the French, where the US tries to regulate the internet as a whole. The ruling was not: remove the offensive content, but rather: make the offensive content unavailable for known french persons. I don't agree with either, but it's an important difference.
candy and chocolate ARE taxed higher than water: water is a basic product you NEED for washing and drinking. You need the stuff to live. Candy and chocolate are not needed, and are taxed at the higher rate.
hmm.. I can copy a book, and bind it in hardcover if I want. for personal use this is allowed. True, the manufacturer is not obliged to provide me with the hardcover for a low price... but I am allowed to make it myself. I just can't sell it.
hmm.. I think I heard somewhere that in New Zealand (and maybe other countries) ALL DVD players sold are zoneless by law. Anyone in New Zealand got the MPAA letter? That may give the MPAA even more troubles..
SMS is a bit less expensive, and 'intersect 5th and main' is precise enough to block it. a simple WAP email would do too, and makes it possible to send to multiple recipients at once. and all accessible easily, there's phoneshops on just about every corner. If hooligans can do it, so can geeks.
hmm.. I wouldn't exactly put museums as educational. there are museums of the weidest things, and although I would probably learn something from going to say the dinky toy museum or the piggybank museum, I would hardly call it educational.
ah yes.. the old 'europe is socialist'.. let's face it.. from a european point of view, both major US candidates are ultra-right wing. so be it, and I'm staying put right here in europe.
this law is not completely unique, I know of one other law that states that 'if it looks like , it IS '
dutch gunlaw. probably european too, but don't take my word for it.
a toy gun that is indistinguishable(sp?) from a real gun is considered a real gun for most purposes, and requires a permit. That's why toy guns are sick colours and have a large, red cap on the barrel. a toy gun that looks like a real gun can easily be used for a holdup.
