novels here are much, much cheaper. I usually pay 20-25 guilders per novel. The same as a CD should cost, but cds are almost twice as expensive. And the book-companies havent been boasting about how soon their books would cost less. Add also the fact that record-companies closed off grey import (importing of legal CDs from other countries) which WERE reasonably priced (AND gave artists their share) and you can see how much of a monopoly they are.
through Napster I have already found a few small bands, that I have bought the CD's of. But for me there is a very important reason to use napster o download so-called 'pirated' music. for me it is a form of civil disobedience. I don't mind paying for my music. What I do mind is paying TOO MUCH for music. in the netherlands CD's cost about 40 guilders, which is about 18 USD, whereas the record-industry has been shouting since the introduction of CDs that they would soon be the same price as vinyl (about 10 USD). This never happened, and consumers have been lied to consistently. That is why I use Napster, and why I will not buy CDs that cost more than 25 guilders. Also, I payed tariffs on blank cassettes, tariffs for content that COULD be placed on those cassettes. That means I already payed for that content, and I'm gonna bloody well get it too.
McDonald's coexisting?!? they won't.. they recently forced a name-change on a small cafetaria, and even tried to order the guy to change the colours of his store-front cause it had red and yellow on it. He had named his joint after his daughter, and used to be called MEK burger. (yes, that's also how it was capitalized). No way he was going to get any money for the lawsuit, so he caved and changed the name..
aiming probably isn't that much of a problem. Laser light is coherent, but still the area that gets hit gets larger as distance increases. I think I once read somewhere that a laser pointed at the moon from earth generates a light spot about the size of a football-field (soccer field for those who think football is played with your hands). It's probably safe to say that the sail gets hit over the entire surface rather than a defined spot. the propelling force will be perpendicular to the sail, and the craft can be directed by changing the angle of the sail, much like a sailboat.
Not everybody has a credit card. From a dutch viewpoint nobody needs one, so not many people have one. Want to pay with plastic? you use either your normal bank-account, or the chipknip which is also hardly used by anyone. Much to the chagrin of the banks who lost millions on introducing it.

today or yesterday it was announced that some ICT companies in the netherlands will get some extra room to hire people from outside the EU, so that may just be a good shot if you wanna come to the Netherlands. Speech is free, the beer is good, coffee is just about a national drink, job security is good. Most people know english quite well, so language shouldn't be much of a problem either. at age 18 you're fully adult, so none of this 21 year crap for buying alcohol. And then there's coffee-shops, but that's another story (that has remarably little to do with coffee)
I did put it a little black-and-white... but here in europe companies can't just disallow their music(all music) because some entirely legal thing isn't to their liking. Especially record-companies. If a radio-station pays their dues for music, they can play music, whether BUMA/STEMRA (dutch organisation for collecting cash for music) wants them to or not. And luckily it isn't so easy for european employers to fire their employees, but that doesn't have anything to do with this.
so users on your network are prevented from using napster to trade music. but napster in itself is nothing, and an MP3 is not by definition illegal. It may be legit to block napster at work, since napster is not necessary for work, especially if it takes up 95% of available bandwidth. But the reasons you cite are not very logical unless you also forbid employees to use cassette recorders and pens (they can copy an entire book using just a pen, some paper and a little time!)
perhaps because they want to grow hemp(Cannabis Sativa) rather than pot. hemp grown for fiber can't be smoked (well... you CAN smoke it, it just doesn't do much in quantities less than 1 m^3) and the fiber is quite useful to make things like clothing, ropes and paper (the american constitution was written on hemp-paper). hemp is an extremely fast growing plant, several meters in a year. This makes it a very interesting agricultural plant. Unfortunately growing hemp is heavily restricted, so asking some governmental organisation for info about laws on growing hemp is not that far-fetched as it may seem.
As a sidenote: the family of plants that hemp is in (Cannabiceae) contains 2 species, that are both used in drugs: Hop for making beer, and hemp for smoking. Yes I'm calling beer a drug. And I drink the stuff too. At this moment.
A government is supposed to look out for the country, and rather than their own power they are aimed at the country's power. And a democratic system gives some control over who's in government. It may be important to note that I'm mainly speaking for a dutch perspective: There are many political parties to choose from, including (but not limited to) liberals, democrats, republicans, corporate flunkies, religious nuts, racists and treehuggers.
>Who do you want to keep track of you: Business or government?
That's indeed the question. I just wanted to make a point the other way. People cannot influence companies or the persons in charge of a company, whereas a government is chosen (keeping to the US and EU). Personally I would sooner trust a government than a company. At least governments are supposed to look out for their people, where companies only look out for themselves.
What I am worried about is not mac versions.. MS has done some mac software. What I am more worried about is that people like Loki won't be allowed to port bungie's games to,linux any more...
