  1. Re:Wow 10000!!! on PowerSchool Software Helps School Districts · · Score: 1

Yeah, in a 'dumbass' moment I kinda glazed over that "apple selling" part. I was too focused on the "platform-independent" part... my bad! :-)

I understand that my school district doesn't *necissarily* compare to everyone elses. In fact the fellow who responded that most school districts are under 10000 people makes that point. Rural areas account for a far greater percentage of the U.S. than urban, however population density in these areas is far less. To me, this would explain the statistics in the followup post. I would assume that the majority of districts are smaller than my local one. In my county, the city and county schools were merged to create a FAR larger beast. My comment stems from the fact that, based on the qouted specs, this system wouldn't work for my local district. Nor would it work for a single city school system like say... New York city. There are plenty of >10,000 student districts out there this system wouldn't help.

I get your point, and I appreciate your lengthy follow-up. (I'll spare you mine :-) I was simply stating my opinion based on *my* personal experience. No harm, no foul...

On another note, I wonder if the extremely small size of your district would make it impractical to implement such a system. Or better yet, unnecissary since your parents (presumably) would have had no problems contacting your teachers directly (or vice versa) for the information it could provide...

I don't know about your local school districts, but I live in a medium-small sized town and 10,000 students in a district is on the small side. Give me something that can handle each school as a module and update to a County based repository and I'd be impressed.

PS -> If it's platform independant, why is this in the mac section?

A release party!? Sweet! To bad I couldn't attend. Although, I can't wait to see the video.

What do you mean there's no video? I thought this was the release party for iMovie?

Back when I was in NA (Narcotics Anonymous) for some serious shit, we call this transferance or blame shifting. Come on guy... Get off your soap box and get a life. How can you compare this to something like cigarettes or drugs? Cigarettes and the like are addictive (period). It is a chemical addiction that can affect anyone. Yes, there are psychologial implications with these as well, but NOTHING compares to a physical need. I'd compare it to your need to eat. Basically all you are doing is shifting blame for YOUR personal weakness. I'd back your argument if this was something that everyone that ever played your game was susceptible to but I played them, and frankly I never got hooked.

  7. You'd rather play with Dolls? on Judge Decides X-Men Aren't Human · · Score: 1
OK, I read the article and it all comes down to whether or not they are classified as TOYS or as DOLLS. The ruling declares them as Toys. Fine. So, to all those fanboys crying foul... HAHA you want to play with dolls!

I distincly remember playing with my G.I. Joe and Star Wars toys as a child and vehemently arguing that they were ACTION FIGURES and not dolls. Real men don't play with dolls. So X-Men fans, you should rejoice that you haven't yet another stigma to try and shrug off.

  9. To Whom it concerns on Is Mac OS X Slow? · · Score: 1
I've used a Ti Powerbook, Win 2000, and XP side by side for months now (and linux too). I can happily report that the Mac is NOT slow. It's generally as fast, equal to, or slower, but it all depends on what is being done. My feeling is that it all balances out.

One thing that I will note that I find interesting and annoying. Is the fact that my Windows machines tend to BECOME slower as the install ages. I guess I would attribute this to cruft but I can't conclusivley find anything. I have the XP box pretty slimmed down and definitely NO roll-back functions are running. But the Windows installs DO get slower with age. My Mac, just happily purrs along...

P.S. Don't bother infering my preference from this post. I'm not a mac FREAK, nor am I a Windows bigot. My computer room is a commune where everyone works together.... for my benefit of course. (Does that make me the tzar?)

  10. moving away from binary? on AMD Makes 10-Nanometer Transistor · · Score: 1
Oh wow! So three gates on a transistor! Now we can move past binary onto trinary. This will invalidate lots of old code, but I'm sure they can emulate! Of course Microsoft has been running trinary in Windows for years. The three states are ON, OFF, and CHOKE.

The ultimate system, in my opinion, would use a multistate transistor with ON, OFF, and a dimmer function for everything in between.
