  1. Re:Utilities the reviewer was most impressed by .. on Initial Reactions to Fedora Core 5 · · Score: 1

I tend to disagree - I find those utilities very limiting and rarely have I used any of the daemons they've got those tools made for in the way that they thought I should use them. I've had to hack up the config files just about every time - Samba doesn't work when it's only a few options. There are more for a reason. And CUPS and NFS, and PAM especially.

Ultimately, those utilities and the OS's reliance on them are one of the biggest drawbacks I think.

Sudo isn't supposed to ask for the root password - it's supposed to ask for the user's password because its intent is to verify that the user really is the user who was granted permissions by visudo. The program that would escalate you to root, requiring the root password, is su.

And I'm sure that it works that way on Fedora too, by the way. That's not a distinction between Fedora and Ubuntu.

I generally always have my Treo with me, but if I were going somewhere I didn't want to have the PDA and only wanted a phone, it would be trivial to pop out my SIM card and put it in a spare phone I have in the closet and go out knowing that my phone is disposable. Of course, if I were to lose it, I'd have to buy a new SIM card presumably, but that's a whole lot more convenient than losing my Treo.

Personally, I like a lot of the Palm interfaces and applications. As much as I prefer linux for about about everything else, I think I'd act with a less hesitation to make a permanent switch (or at least a time-consuming back and forth) if I could run a Palm emulator.

In the nineties, it wasn't about just any domain name. Keyword domain names were worth millions at least. Someone had the foresight to get sex.com (which you can't deny is and was an incredibly profitable keyword on the web) fast and lost that opportunity. He fought to keep the domain and pointed out the errors in NSI's policies and even when demonstrated to them he was the rightful owner, they did nothing to undo their mistake.

The real perpetrator in this case is NSI for essentially violating their agreement with the original owner to keep his domain in his control, but you can't deny that the original owner wasn't a victim.

This doesn't mean that MA can't switch to OpenOffice if they think it's the better solution for them. This does mean that they can use ODF files and *expect* everyone else to be able to open them. If someone can't because they're running Office, then they can just upgrade. This puts the expense of using Office and upgrading Office on the people who are forcing it down everyone else's throats. I don't use Office, but I do recognize a problem with exchanging documents with those who do. I generally save as Doc files for them and try to verify on another person's machine that it will open correctly. It's good to know that I may be able to just send them ODF files from now on.

I've been with Voicestream and now T-Mobile for years. I've taken my phone all over the world and used it on carriers in other countries with prepaid SIM cards when I've been away on longer trips. It's not locked and works on any GSM network in the world and can be serviced by any GSM provider's service.
