  1. Re:No 'watching' though on DoA Creator Says Online Is New Arcade · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think the big difference though, is the 'crowd'.

How about LAN-parties? You get together with a bunch of fellow geeks, you play your favourite games and the one with the most frags or the best tactics gets the attention.

People talking about this player and that player, and what their strengths are.

At the last LAN-party I attended, I had just changed my nickname. I kept this new 'identity' secret for a long time. For some reason, I did pretty well, sometimes even better than the Clansmen. They kept wondering who this strange person was. Ah. Sweet glory.

I do not think that the comparison of video games and other entertainment is very unfair. The article stated that other forms of electronic entertainment are either barely playing even or even declining, while video games are on the rise. IMHO, that is quite an interesting point. Apparently, the game industry is the only form of entertainment, which is actually gaining in popularity. In this time of economic decline, that is no small feat.

  5. Half-life versus Unreal on Unreal II Demo Released · · Score: 1

    > Hell, Im still playing Half-Life.

This is actually an interesting point. When Unreal (I) was launched somewhere in 1998, it was an awesome game. It was atmospheric, it had some storyline, which was not too good, but not too bad either, and the graphics were stunning. It would probably have been the most popular FPS-game, if HalfLife would not have been launched around the same time. HL blew Unreal away in almost every aspect: its graphics were much better, there were some _very_ good mods (I still play CounterStrike) and the atmosphere was unlike any other game.
To me, it seems that history is going to repeat itself. Or worse: U2 looks fine, but does not have particular innovations, whereas HL2 will have a kick-ass AI (dynamic facial expressions *DROOL*), even better graphics, etc.

The thing most people care about is price and availability.

Actually, in the Netherlands, these is currently an investigation going on concerning the record companies artificially keeping their prices very high. In 2 years, the price for a new CD has risen from EUR16-18 to EUR20-22. The record companies have never come with an acceptable justification for this steep inflation, although they mumble something about the introduction of the Euro last year.
Last thing I heared, CD sales were dropping hard.

  8. Wearing headphones does help! on The Tyranny of Email · · Score: 1

As a programmer in a small IT company, I often find that the comradely atmosphere actually hampers my work. Normally it is no big problem, but when I can really use no interruptions whatsoever, I put an audio CD in my cup holder and put on some headphones. The trick is to choose the right kind of music. Goth-Industrial will not increase concentration or productivity. Ambient will.

Back on topic, here's my 2c. An early comment was adding undelete functionality would help migrate Average Joe to Linux desktops. Do we actually *want* this? OK, I'm being smug now, but everyone with half a brain (or less) and a lack of sufficient computer knowledge should *not* be migrating to Linux (yet). Linux is not ready for them and they are not ready dor Linux.

I do like the idea of being able to undelete files and it will surely come in handy for many sysops.
