You don't feel comfortable paying for an online service? Are you paying for internet access? Do you pay for MMOs? The 'silver' package is free. Doesn't cost you anything. The current xbox live purchasing system is idiot proof. There are about 3 "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO BUY THIS?" warnings, as well as the option to require a password to require content.

Word of advice Jim, Name your variables with the longest names you need to understand the code. The compiler doesn't care how long it is; variable names aren't stored in memory or accessed during runtime (or ever). I've been sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out how a programming language that stored variable names in memory would even work.

Actualy people 200 years ago would easily understand the concept of highways. Hell, we've had trade routes for thousands of years. Ever hear of caravans or carriages? They used roads to travel between cities. Not to different from modern highways, no?

Also, why is a 3D engine required for AI? Wouldn't it be easier to get AI to think about abstract data, without the overhead of a 3D engine and physics simulations?

    Hey Jim,

you said "a hardcore gamer makes a good designer"
then "a hardcore gamer can't spot imbalances"

I'd say those were mutually exclusive...

Even though a good game tester "plays out" a game, it doesn't necesarily mean the tester a is a "main game designer", or even good game designer... Or even intelligble, for that matter.

    CrazyJim,

I've been a fan of yours for some time (everyone else should be too). And I have to say, I want to see you write this book. I think, if properly written, "Human Farm In It" could be the next great sci fi epic. I found out that it could make you many thousands of dollars, if properly marketed. Please Jim, write this book.

I agree that these warranties are useful but make sure you read them carefully. Dell only sells extended "Limited" warranties.

I bought a dell system last year and stupidly forgot to get a Network card with it. So I just went and picked up a card from a local computer store and slapped it in. 8 months later, a cap on the NIC exploded/caught on fire and melted my PCI cards and scorched my motherboard. Could have easily burned down my house, it happened while I was away. I called Dell and they said that because the damage was caused by the NIC (That I purchased from someone other than them) I would have to replace the motherboard, sound card, and video card on my own, even though I had purchased the extra 3-year "Limited" warranty. Although they happily gave me a rediculously inflated price quote for replacement parts.

$600 later I decided to go the /. way an only build my own systems from now on. Never got anything in the way of compinasion from Dell or AMC (the maker of the NIC).
