I agree with you in some respects. I am SOOOOO not the typical open source zealot.. but I must say having to rely on one company for patches, not being able to do it yourself and just buggy software in general... closed source sorta bothers me. BUT it is released a LOT quicker than opensource. I have been enjoying Internet Explorer over netscape for a long time because that opensource model for mozilla failed a long time ago. Just my opinion. But it has taken too long and I have stopped thinking of netscape as a solution. So many cool open source projects going on out there... but most of the cool ones I am interested in have been going on for YEARS and look no closer to completion than they did a few years ago. So on one hand you have slow to finish open source with publicly viewable code.. faster to fix. On the other you have closed source... its a companies ass if they don't produce it quick enough.. so it comes out quick... is for the most part quite usable... however sometimes buggy... Too bad there can't be an inbetween... where it comes out quick and can be fixed by the public. I guess it all has to do with the amount of people willing to work for free associated with open source.

Well mission critical is debatable.. we host websites for about 20 companies and my whole need for getting the server back up quickly is so I don't hear the phone ring off the hook with "WHy is my website down?!". Its a large hard drive and yeah FSCK took way too long when it was on the old box.

I didn't recompile a kernel specifically for reiserFS I just made a new box, installed mandrake 7 with reiser and migrated all the websites to the new box.

We have a tape backup of everything just in case. But its quite nice to have Reiser. And as one guy pointed out apparently it is supposed to be faster. But again I wouldn't know because I don't have any way to push it to test. And another guy mentioned hardware level preventative measures to stop morons from touching my machines. That will come in handy... if i can get in there on a sunday morning at like 3 am when none of our clients are watching :)

I also turned off the captured ctrl-alt-del because we used to have an NT box and my boss would pick up the wrong keyboard to log in and reboot my server. Damn NT.... anyway KVMs and separation helped.

So after all the "oops... i turned off the wrong machine, Larry"'s I get from people, turning on the machine and having it back up in a few seconds is crucial. I haven't noticed a performance hit but we aren't a big company and our servers are not taxed too terribly much. But thats no reason to not do better. This Filesystem looks like it offers stability and performance. I am glad to see it happening. :) Thanks.

Would slashdot get in an uproar if some lawyers trying to challenge that failed? There is a line on free speech and what is decent and moral. I am not a religious bible thumper either. God can bite me. But I think we all need to refrain from becoming rabid at everyone trying to enforce a little bit of law.

Games say mature on them.. 17+ so the law just says "yeah you aren't sposed to sell it to younger people... and we back this rating". Maybe them saying 18 in this case is kinda dumb since the rating says 17 i think. Anyway there is a right and wrong. And we need to fight against the wrongs and let the rights happen.

They see that they can sell stuff online really quick by using a Microsoft product. They don't think about all the downtime they will have to deal with. They don't think about the instability or insecurity of the platform. They just see dollar signs. Fortunately those who think like this lose their money eventually and their company crumbles.
Closed source code is why this happened. I would be interested in finding out how this info came to be. I mean it being closed source, they could have kept it secret forever. It obviously was intentional because supervisors have to look the code over. This sort of thing would never come to pass in Apache because we can look at the code before we compile it. I really wonder about society today when they let a company rape them and hold their hand to the next raping.

The player, the producer (encoder) and the server. Absolutely no costs involved.

We looked into different things when some clients of ours wanted streaming audio and video on their websites. Real costs soooooo much that it isn't worth bothering with. I mean its like 700 something for the producer.... Why bother?

At that point to relieve some stress why not joke about them with your fellow friends. And why not wake up and read a cartoon as funny as userfriendly each morning. Isn't it our right to decide? So Microsoft steals the MacOS idea and turns it into windows and pisses off jobs (who doesn't). Gates responce is "You stole it from Xerox so we can steal it from you."

This is the standard excuse they seem to be throwing out. The only difference between Microsoft and these people they steal from is those other companies are creating beauty and innovating. Microsoft is just buying and incorporating.

When I was a CAD Operator we used Microstation and you can't just switch packages because it is on a better os. And lemme tell you... it would be nice if that could happen because it running on Windows NT is horrible. I had to reboot multiple times a day because of memory problems.

But you see, Microstation has these 3rd party extensions like fieldworks and draftworks by intergraph that make up more than 50% of it's total functionality for what we were doing. This could not be applied to another cad package and I am not sure if you could simply move Microstation to another OS. I don't know if the Intergraph parts would still be functional. Once the CAD community starts demanding, I am sure change will happen. But it still may be some time. I mean in a professional business like CAD, there is no time to deal with silly issues like memory leaks and faulty Operating Systems. Its time to wise up and just use what works.

Also to the person that said Microstation was on the mac. Do the intergraph plugins work there too? That would at least be somewhat better. Then again I am not a CAD Operator anymore. hehe.
