Kids (and adult gamers) don't want to have to switch devices to check their Facebook and Twitter accounts, watch a movie, listen to music, etc.

in 2004 a company released, a portable gaming device that soon had a built in web browser, that had the ability to watch video and listen to music. Some Slashdot nerds said back then that the media ability was a waste and that it should have focused ONLY on games. So you're saying that the company involved, whos name might be Sony, and that the device which might be called the PSP, was a good idea all along?

Yes, but you are not the "average person".and don't realize how much of an outlier you are.

All of them. Or more accurately as many as you can.

Or are platformers a genre for major labels only?

No, but if you want to publish it, it would help if one was an already established developer. Many of those so-called "indie" dev houses did JME games before they did their big hit. As i've told you, the easiest way to break in the industry will be to work for an already established company. If you don't want to do that, just give it up already.

But the REAL problem is that my monitor (which is actually a small HDTV) doesn't properly respond to EDID requests over VGA, so I had to do some xorg.conf editing.

The problem is that the binary drivers don't always survive kernel updates So people who rely on nVidia's proprietary binary drivers can't always update their kernel or they lose their graphics until nVidia puts out an update.

There's an easy button way for Nvidia's drivers to survive a kernel update on Fedora:

    Install rpmfusion repositories.

    yum install akmod-nvidia

Do that once, and you never have to worry about kernel updates....or the F16 to F17 update either, messing with your Nvidia driver.

Throw some cash at poor schools to match that places like New Trier spend. If the kids in New Trier (which is a public school mind you) deserve what they get, don't all kids? There are schools that DON'T have gifted programs...let alone the enriched stuff New Trier has, even today.

Most kids, aren't nerds. And while we might love to see our pet hobbies in schools. a la "All kids should learn Python!", this is no different from a concert Pianist saying "all kids should study piano because it makes them smarter"

And lets not forget class differences...model rockets is one of those usual upper middle class son of an engineer" hobbies we see so many Slashdotters have. It's like all those articles where Slashdotters reminisce about their C64's and they don't even realize that most people "didn't" have a home computer in the 80's.
