What? the PS3 supports the higher quality MP4/h.264 settings, high profile, not baseline. The problem is, most of the h.264 out there is encoded for the Apple devices which don't support that. For example the PSP supports CABAC but the iPod devices don't, the PSP is also a Main Profile device.
You used to be able to dual boot with linux *AND* play games
Yep, that was awesome. Though, as you know, the partition schemes allowed were annoying. You either had 10GB to GameOS and the rest to Linux, or 10GB to Linux (not really enough) and the rest to GameOS. Couldn't split it in half like I wanted.
No, that's not the case. On the PS2 X actually had limited hardware acceleration. It ran Enlightenment better than the PS3 did, I know because I actually did it. You could also code directly to the metal for full access to the GS.
How many times have i said this: PS3's don't update themselves. If you have a PS3 with a firmware capable of using OtherOS it will not update itself into non-capability of using OtherOS unless you as a user specifically confirm to do so..TWICE. And it warns you that you will lose OtherOS if you do.
You can't accidentally update a PS3, when upgrading from 3.20 and earlier it requires you to confirm...TWICE, and tells you what will happen when you do.
Wine doesn't run on PS3's because WINE Is Not an Emulator and requires an x86 CPU. And even if it did run on PPC, the display output on the PS3 under Linux is unaccelerated framebuffer.
I play for the competitive thrill and to win, you play for fun and immersion.
Hey, that's pretty insightful. I never thought of it that way before, I guess I do play for the immersion. I like it when players actually communicate tactics and whatnot and not just slurs and insults. I like it when we use actual leap-frog you cover me while I move and then I'll cover you when you move techniques. I like it when someone acts as spotter. "hostiles coming up past the burnt out truck". I like it when we do a good "breach and clear"
I'm not interested in playing against handicapped players with an unfair advantage, I'm interested in playing against the best with the best input devices possible.
I'm wondering what will happen when the PS3 gets it's version of FreeRealms. I've played the PC version and quickly realized that for some of the minigames (specifically the kart racing) a controller would be a handy thing. I suspect PS3 players will quickly dominate the racing. The other parts of the game will probably work okay on whatever control system one uses, the MMORPG combat in it isn't as skill/UI happy as say WoW is.
I can't enjoy the mind-numbingly slow experience given by console FPSes unless there is a change in the standard input device.
You know, if you're carrying 80 pounds of weapons and equipment for reals, you probably can't turn 180 in an instant and make 100% accurate head shots at 200 meters. The "slowness" you describe is probably more realistic anyway, especially in something like SOCOM where you don't have a regenerating shield/health.
On a side note, I'd love a KBM setup for a console, but I understand the reason it is not allowed.
What do you mean "not allowed" haven't you ever heard of this little doodad
Also, both the C64 and Amiga were originally designed to be video game consoles. (that's why the C64 has the Ultimax mode) They were turned into computers later into their development.
Further more, both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have you tie saves to user accounts. In this case it's more of a side effect of their online services, but it's still a good feature and one that the Wii should use: it means that you can't accidentally delete a different user's save games.
And don't forget the ability to copy saves to external storage. Heck, I can play Castlevania: SOTN on my PS3 and then copy the save to my PSP and continue on. Or copy my PSone/PS2 saves to my PS3.
And the Wii has a perfect system for this with Miis. Pick an "active" Mii and tie save games to that Mii - it's a simple system that I expect children could easily pick up and it would allow individual players to have their own save slots. Even if they kept strict limits on saves per user, this would be a big improvement.
That is such a great idea, I hope they start using it.
They haven't taken anything away, the system update that removes OtherOS support in the Fat PS3's is completely voluntary. In fact, it asks you to confirm that you want to do it..TWICE. if you have a PS3 with Linux on it, all you have to do is not update the firmware. Youll be shut out of PSN if you don't though, that is a drawback, but if you're that gung ho about Linux your PS3 probably spends most of it's time in OtherOS anyway. And yes, I did have YDL on mine, but it was my choice to update my firmware. I could have chosen not to.
Neither Microsoft or Nintendo has had ANY official Linux support. So far, two of Sony's consoles have been able to officially run Linux. Yes, I have the PS2 Linux kit as well.
You didn't know that there were component cables for the PS2? Gee, the choice between RGB and Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr,
output via those cables is right in the PS2's main menu, and it's mentioned in the manual. There's even PS2 games that support Widescreen and/or progressive scan ( almost always 480p, though up to 1080i is possible)
Though at this point I doubt most of us PC gamers want to be associated with the frat boy stereotype that perpetuates on consoles.
Some of us console gamers don't either. Though frat boy is a bit of a misnomer it's probably more accurate to use after-school or between/after-class same screen shooter/sports multiplayer. I don't play Halo, I don't play Madden, I don't play WWEfoo, I don't play MLB/NBA/NCAAfoo. I don't obsess over the minutiae of the Master Chief or that grunting Kratos guy. I'm also getting tired of the video game magazines catering to the Halo and God-of-War crowd. I blame Goldeneye for the N64, for creating the "dorm room/after school deathmatch" demographic in the first place.
Well, why didn't you get a PS3 when it DID have backwards compatibility? The cost? Well, to appease the people who said the PS3 cost too much they took it out.
From what I read, the limitations were the Eyetoy camera and the PS2 hardware. It wasn't quite powerful enough to do what they wanted with it. They decided to wait for better camera tech to become cheaper and for a CPU with more horsepower.
There are many many companies that specialise in addons for the major sims. There are even companies that make specialised hardware.
Yes there are, but that doesn't mean it's a large market or a very large one percentage wise in the entire gaming market. Sure, there will always be those Tom Clancy/Dale Brown afcionados with the full HOTAS and cockpit setups, but there aren't very many of them. Not enough to sustain a large number of games or companies making such.
The reason you don't see lots of those is becaues "nerds" are a smaller portion of the gaming market. It's not like 1985 when a much higher proportion of computer gamers (even on the C64) had played Avalon Hill hes map tabletop games or pencil and paper D&D.
How about large game worlds? Consoles, with their tiny memory amounts, put real limits on that kind of shit. As an interesting study in this, look at Deus Ex 1 vs Deus Ex 2. DX1 was PC only, running on Unreal Engine 1.
Deus Ex 1 wasn't PC only, it was on the PS2 as well.
Also it wasn't streaming,
Streaming worlds is smart, it enables you to have HUGE worlds with 0 load times between zones, like EQOA on the PS2. You could walk/swim from Fayspires to Qeynos and never see a load screen. Who cares if things out of your FOV don't exist and are regenerated.
The consoles are only 720p devices (1280x720). Yes, they do basic upsampling but you gain no detail with that. Other than a few rare PS3 games (which suffer in therms of textures and so on because of it) that run at 1080, they all run at 720, and sometimes even less.
Ha ha....It's not that loud...but it's louder than I'd like.
There used to be lots of men assisting nurses in hospitals...they called them orderlies. Got rid of them to save money I think.

for the PS3, use High Profile level 4.1
They know their games don't work on consoles so they don't even try to adapt Starcraft to gamepads. And they still make money.
You never heard of Starcraft 64 for the Nintendo 64? Or Diablo or Warcraft II for the PSone? Never play any of the many Diablo clones on the PS2? Tell me that Diablo 3 doesn't look like this game: http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/championsofnorrath/video/6089192/champions-of-norrath-video-review?nonRedirectElement=1
Blizzard could release any of their games for consoles...they just simply don't do so these days.

Ouch! My condolences. If I wasn't the sole user of mine I'd have put a little sign on mine if I'd have kept YDL on it,
Folding@Home has been available for the PS3 for years

They did, the Zego: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zego
And the PS2 based GSCube before that:

Don't even think about playing Alien Resurrection without one.
