Converting the data is not that big of an issue compared to making sure that the thousands of homebrew apps that are used in the fashions are brought up to spec.

And while I do realize that Gates is pretty much out the door at MS my bigger point is that, IMHO, he has been little more than a business man figurehead for a long long time. Jobs is probably in the same possition. His days of innovation are probably long behind him.

All kidding aside, I don't know how much Jobs or Gates can be considered engineers or developers any longer. Does anyone really know how long it's been since either of these guys has done hands-on anything? My guess is that Gates hasn't coded in well over 15 years. I wonder if the boy could even do a group policy edit if he had to.

As a new EVE player (a little over a month now) it would be fantastic not having to be at my laptop every time a skill training expires. That's the whole thing about EVE; it's great that you can train for skills while off line but the time it takes makes it a regal pain in the ass any time you need to switch to a new skill but aren't at your machine. I actually take the time to plan my skill training around my real life schedule.

I understand that it's part of the appeal of the game and takes away from the grind a bit but still, I want to play when I went to play, not when my training tract says I should. I find myself putting time into lesser skills because they have large time cycles and I don't feel like I'm wasting my time.

  19. Re:Star Wars tech? on 30 Years of Star Wars Technology · · Score: 1

Sure I would say The Time Machine is sci-fi on two fronts.

First is the most obvious matter of time travel. I guess this could be reduced to mere fantasy so I won't push the point.

But secondly, as you said, it's partly about the industrialization of society at the time and Wells' outlook on where it had a potential to lead. This is the same reason that Neuromancer (which someone brought up earlier) can be sci-fi; it's a story of what the future might be because of the technology. Star Wars doesn't address the technology itself, it hardly even uses it as a vehicle for anything at all.

  20. Re:Star Wars tech? on 30 Years of Star Wars Technology · · Score: 1

Science fiction should involve science. Star Wars doesn't do that. It uses future technology as a backdrop, sure, but doesn't actually involve the technology in and of itself. That's science fiction when the technology is involved.

I have to agree with you here from the tech aspect. There was no real tech. A car hovered because they said it did. No explanation was given. It's on the same level as a fairy tale with fairy dust.

For that reason alone I disqualify Star Wars as sci-fi. There simply is no "sci" to it at all. Even terrible pseudo-science films like Dante's Peak and Deep Impact are miles ahead of Star Wars.

Hypothetical question. If some artsy filmmaker made a low budget Watchmen movie that was really low budget, Im talking about uses visual symbolism instead of special effects, less than half a million budget, etc etc, that was absolutely in keeping with the spirit and meaning of the source work would you go watch it? Would you watch it over a Hollywood version that was visually cool?

I can't speak for the entire Watchmen thing as I'm not into the whole comic book deal but I will tell you that I found the ultra-low budget Call of Cthulhu was just the thing to helping me get my Lovecraft groove back on after a long time away from the old gents works.

And it's not that I've ever seen Lovecraft as low budget but I guess most people do simply by his association with the word "pulp."

Now, would I rather see a high rent version of the same thing? Only if it was spent on actors who can act. Eye candy doesn't mean anything if I can't get into the story. Eye candy is only good if it goes unnoticed instead of being the focus of a film.
