and I'm sure that when UT2K4 comes out, I'll get two copies of that too. (When friends come over to LAN I like to have an extra machine setup so we don't spend all our time trying to get the games to work.) I'll probably pick up one or two of the NWN expansions as they come out as well.
Sure I miss playing some of the shiny-new games my 'doze running friends play. But it's not worth the trouble of paying $200 to MS or pirating XP (or even the iffy support of WineX) just to play a game. Critical mass is building in the Linux world and soon we'll see the game developers doing more ports. Already the list of what's available on tuxgames.com and what is coming soon is encouraging.
Let's see, lied to by deans. Refusal to accept transfer credits because of "improperly filled out forms" (even when the transfer credits were taken on the advice of a dean AND that dean helped me fill out the forms). No chance of appeals because Dean Robinson "is the appeals board", and gives not a rats ass about students.
Awesome school. Wasted three years of my life and tens of thousands of dollars out of my own pocket there just to be told sorry - you are going to have to lose over 50 credits from CSU. Now I'm back at CSU and bored out of my mind. Still two years from a degree and a great deal poorer.
No one there cares about students (least of all undergrads). That school deserves every bad thing that happens to it.
I'm glad you had a good experience there.

Let me try to get a grasp on your argument here, Tim... Last time you wrote an article about how XML sucks and were bemused that people thought you were saying that XML sucks. Now you write an article about how XML doesn't suck so, um, you want us to think that you really think it sucks again, right?!
Whew. Thanks for straightening that out for me. I was worried for a moment that I'd have to stop hating XML again.
I think everyone was aware before either of these articles became part of the collective, that like any other technology, XML isn't always the best solution. I think this is more news because the author of a widely used technology is actually stating this obvious fact. Go ahead and ask a company what their product isn't best at or where another techonology or product might do better and I bet you'll hear a lot of stammering (unless they have a much more expensive product to sell you...). So good for Tim for airing these thoughts.
Tonight on "SoulFire", a malformed HTTP request header sends our lovely Daemonettes into a (kernel) panic! Is it a malicous attack by the raging Mozilla monsters? We thought they were destroyed before, but they have risen again like a Phoenix from the ashes. It couldn't be the insidious Internet Exterminators with their sneaky sidekick Eula (since everyone knows I.E. crashes before doing anything useful). Go on Safari with The Mod_Perl Squad as they save the day again - Konquerors of the Common Gateway Kingdom! Don't worry, this show isn't over - the fat lady hasn't sung at this Opera yet!
That was terrible. Seriously, I know the CG part of "CGI" stands for "computer graphics", but I have know idea what the hell the "I" is for. Everytime I've heard someone reference this it's just been called CG.
One DVD with 4 eps was at the video store. The entire series was no where to be found.
What I think happens is that these are licensed copies, but just not for the American market. Like I can go to Canada and buy drugs for a tenth of the price in America, right? For example, the boxed set of Absolutely Fabulous is around $120 for the first three seasons in the US, but around $60 for all four from the UK (ebay, again). Is this pirated too? It doesn't seem too likely to me. Just priced for the market it is supposed to be sold in.
Anyway, for better or worse these kinds of market pressures only help the consumer. In a perfect market economy there wouldn't be artificial barriers to pricing. Why would I pay $30 for 4 eps when I could get cable for a month for that price? So I'll buy it and assume it is legit until someone proves otherwise.
But I do thank you for your reply. I'll make more of an effort in the future to double and triple check the authenticity of my purchase. I do want to support the artists who are creating the stuff that I enjoy.
Seriously - get some self control. Sounds like a guilt trip catholic thing (I'm a recovering christian myself - 13 years in catholic school *shudder*). You have to be comfortable with who you are. If you hate pornography, hate it for its exploitive nature and for all the people it has hurt (families via communicable diseases, "objectifying" women, etc.).
(Offtopic warning...) This illustrates exactly my beef with christianity (and probably lots of other religions) - that it's all about the intrinsically selfish and hypocritical desire to live forever in paradise. "I won't do X because I will go to hell," or "I won't surf pr0n because mom will catch me." That's akin to saying "I won't rob a person because I will go to jail." Does that make you a good person? You are still a thief, but the fear of retribution makes you appear good. That's good for society (as Marx said, religion is the opiate of the masses), but let's not fool ourselves. (Note that I am not saying all or even most religious people are bad. I have wonderful friends that are religious and we agree to disagree.)
How about forgetting all that crap and be a good person and help others. If there is a god and he/she/it is the type of god I would be willing to believe in then belief won't matter as much as living a good life. If being a christian versus a buddhist versus whatever matters to an all powerful entity then they can go screw themselves, and I'll go pack my shorts and suntan lotion now.
Yeah, this is off-topic, but I couldn't figure out what the point of this story was... I'll admit to not even R'ingTFA. It's been a while since I've had a good religion rant, so thanks for bearing with me. I'm seriously interested in hearing what other people think about my rant. Do I just not get religion? Inform me.
Too bad you are AC - I'd be curious how I can tell what version is "offical" versus "bootleg". These things sure as hell look "official", not that a pirate isn't capable of making something look real, but what is a consumer supposed to do?
Well, at any rate, I went to the video store and saw a price of $30 for 4 episodes or $30 for the whole set (26 eps) on eBay, supposedly new and legit. What would you do? I paid for and own all my music and that's a lot better than I can say for most of my friends. My apologies to the copyright owner if I bought an illegit copy, but go out and make the real thing cheaper and easier to find in this country and we'll talk.
The "Bebop" is the name of Jet Black's spaceship. Cowboy is a generic term referring to bounty hunters. There is no "America" in the future (2073 IIRC) the show depicts because a good portion of the world was severly damaged during an early experiment with hyper-space style trasportation (the "gate accident" is how it is referred to). That's not to say there isn't stereotyping in the show. In particular people of African or even Asian descent are often stereotyped in what could be considered a negative fashion. It's not as bad as some anime, IMO.
Check the show out if you can - it's a stellar example of what anime can do.
A friend of mine got me hooked on Bebop after showing me a few of the eps on DVD. I immediately went to eBay and bought a complete set of DVDs (26 eps on 3 dvds for about $40 on regionless disks from HongKong, with English audio) a boxed set of the series music (4 cd's, some great tunes) and a copy of the movie (about $8, regionless, English subtitles from HongKong).
I am a bit biased about the movie since I dig the series so much, but it is really an impressive feat of animation. IMO the best I have seen in any anime, Ghost in the Shell and Princess Mononoke included. The story is pretty good, but somewhat akin to the X-Files movie - which seems just like an extended episode with nifty effects thrown in. Don't let that fool you though - I think I this thing can stand on its own, and I can't wait to hear it with the English-language voice actors who are fabulous in the series.
If you get a chance to see some of the episodes before the movie you should do so. You'll appreciate more of the in-jokes and understand some of the oddities (like Ed:) ). Chronologically, I think the movie happens somewhere during the middle of the series so it won't give away the end if you haven't watched it all. If you have, don't worry, it will just enhance your appreciation of it.
and finally I gave in and bought the iBook. I
haven't had it long enough to say that it was
a great or terrible decision, but so far I am
pleased. The weight and size are right on. The
speed is plenty - you can get a faster laptop,
but this isn't ment to be a gaming machine. In
fact because it can't play the latest games means
I'm more likely to do work on it, which is
why I bought it. And with a price point of well under a grand (mine, the 600, was on clearance for around $850), it's far gentler on your wallet than anything I've seen smaller than it.
On top of all this, it just feels right. The
design is clean with a keyboard that is
comfortable to use and a mouse pad that doesn't
suck (any more than any other laptop mouse).
The speakers sound good, the screen is great, and
the battery life kicks ass (4 hours, easy).
Currently I'm sticking with OS X 10.2 - it runs
Perl and Python just fine and that's what I spend
most of my work life doing. At some point I'll
probably get frustrated with a proprietary system
and put Gentoo on the thing.
Anyway - good luck on your purchasing decision.
Don't discount the iBook too quickly, it's a
solidly built work-horse, and it's sexy.:)
This project seems really cool, and I want to run a node, except I have no desire to dedicate a piece of hardware to it. Is there any plan to release a package that can be installed on an existing workstation to provide the mesh functionality, yet still allow the user to use the workstation for other things?
I tried to find the answer to this myself but the downloads section of the site is a bit confusing.
I wish more states would reach this kind of settlement. Wouldn't apply to me, though - the last MS product I purchased was a copy of Win3.1 with a 486dx2-33 in '93. I'll admit to using a, um, perhaps less than legit copy of 95, then 98 for a bit, but I've been 100% Linux for over two years. I've also purchased no less than 10 Linux distros in the past five years (alternating between Redhat, Mandrake, SuSE and Slack as I see fit) - so don't think I'm doing this just to save money. I also have (legal) copies of all the Linux games out there so I can frag my win using friends and laugh at them when their "stable" 2k and XP boxes crash. Oh - and while I'm at it, I don't purchase any MS hardware either - no mice, keyboards, etc.
Oh yeah - I walk the walk, baby. (And now I'm off to install Mandrake 9.1b1, viva la resistance (er, something)!)
Since when does going to college teach you how to program? I work as a
programmer, and I'm working on my degree part-time. I promise you that
I learned more by RTFM then I ever will in a classroom. I know lots
of "educated" programmers that can't program their way out of a
hello_world function call.
Programming and the 'real-world' in general are about problem solving.
No amount of letters behind your name (you know - BA,MS,PhD, etc.) are
going to teach you that. All school teaches you is which books to get
the knowledge out of faster. Creativity and vision (that is, being able
to see the problem) teach you the rest.
Personally, I'm doing the school thing purely out of cynicism. Because
people think that somehow it makes me smarter than I was to begin with.
I wish academia were for real. I wish that colleges upheld the proud
traditions of educating the people and wholesome pursuit of knowledge
they pretend to uphold. Unfortunately it is all about connections,
and marketing yourself. It means playing the game and it is dirty.
Don't you read the articles about how scientists lie about reading the
research they site? What is that supposed to teach me? I would love
to be a researcher and working on real problems. I don't think that
such an position exists today.
And since you had the gall to tell someone else to get the hell out of
the field because they are clearly uneducated and inferior in some
mysterious way I'll assume you are just trolling for some flame.
I would hate to assume that you really are an elitist bigot. Please
take your educational FUD elsewhere.
I don't understand. I've never seen a blog and have no desire to create one. I know of no other person (in the flesh of course) who has seen one or created one. Methinks that besides the attention they get from/. and TheReg, no one else on this planet cares.
I apologize if this sounds trollish, but really - who out there thinks that blogging is a big deal? It's hard enough to hear an informed opinion checking NPR and the BBC for information, let alone surfing peoples' random thoughts in blogs for useful information. Someone convince me otherwise.
It seems that no matter what kind of game this is, it deserves the comment "Oh, not yet another *blank*".
Not yet another FPS. Not yet another RTS. Not yet another MMORPG. I'm not just talking about Linux here,
there just isn't a whole lot of variety out there *period*.
Don't get me wrong - I'm a Linux gamer and I'm pleased to see more coming out. I really love UT2K3 and
my copy of NWN is pre-ordered. I hate TBS, so I'll pass on this one probably, unless I find it on the
cheap somewhere. I bought a bunch of Loki games just to support them and look where that got me (crickey -
Postal is a crappy game).
But back to my off-topic - are there any unique ideas out there about game-types? We have our FPS and
our strategy games (TBS and RTS). We have RPGs including MMORPGS, real-time, turn-based, hybrid, 3d and
isomorphic. There are card games and economic sims (I *heart* gazillionaire), empire builders and
even bridge builders. But when was the last time you saw something new? The Sims? Boy are we in
trouble.
Does anybody have a really cool and unique idea you could let us in on?
Let's see on the front page of/. right now is: Has the Quality of Consumer Electronics Declined?" which is followed immediately by: "Apple Hawks Madonna iPods"...
I get your cynicism, but I'd have to say that if I had kids there's no way in hell I'd let them go to cnn.com. Too many pictures of people blown into little tiny chunks in various places in the world. I'll save such imagery for my FPS games, thank you very much.
Seriously though - does Yahoo and CNN really have to show such graphic pictures? Stories about X many people being shot up or blown up are enough to make anyone cry without pictures of tormented loved ones and juicy bits everywhere.
It's not that I don't want to acknowledge that it happens. I just really don't need to see the GIBs. Doh! I'm way off topic!
GUI libraries aren't naturally user-friendly or not user-friendly. Some are
definitely more programmer friendly than others though. The user-friendly
aspect of them entirely is up to the person building the application in my
experience.
That being said, I think python/Tkinter is a great way to go for cross-platform
GUI-app development. I'm actually a Perl programmer most of the time, but
there is something to be said for Tkinter. On the other hand, I've had a lot
of luck with Perl/Tk and building self-contained win32 apps using ActiveState's
PerlDevKit. That prevents your end users from having to install your programming
environment to use your app (especially if you include lots of add-on modules).
That's a big plus that neither Java nor Python can
match to my knowledge (maybe there's a Python bundler... dunno).
The downside of Perl/Tk is that it's harder to learn than Tkinter. And installing
the environment for your users is probably not a big deal if your users are in a
relatively controlled environment. And don't forget that Java just blows.:)
