  1. Tux MasterCard on Who Should Help LinuxFund Distribute $126,155.29? · · Score: 1

I have one too. All in all, the cute Tux picture has garnered exactly 3 conversations about Linux and probably 50 comments by women saying, "cute penguin!"

It's my primary credit card, so even if they're donating a small fraction of the total, I figure I've probably kicked in a couple of hundred over the years. I'd have just blown it on gin, so they might as well have it.

  2. Re:False Alarm on 2004 Election Weirdness Continues · · Score: 2, Insightful

Just as an FYI: Franklin County is way more liberal than the rest of Ohio (it's one of the reasons I live here). Everyone worked hard to get out the vote, there are just a lot more democrats here than elsewhere in Ohio. The question wouldn't be whether or not we have fewer Bush supporters than the rest of the state, it would be if we have the right amount fewer.

Let the Republicans do whatever they want. Don't fight them on any issue. Let them pass any legislation they want, appoint any judges they want, spend any money they want, cut any taxes they want. Let them have free reign of the government. They want a chance to prove their system works? Give it to them. In fact, whenever they ask you to support them on an issue, go willingly, go gladly and give them everything they want.
Wait a minute, isn't this what they did for the last 4 years?
  4. Re:Hmmmm on Firefox Browser On An Upward Trend · · Score: 2, Insightful

I don't write web sites for a living, so I may be off base here, but recently I've had better luck using a standards compliant browser (Mozilla) for most of my development. When it works there, you know it's probably going to work in Opera, Safari, etc. A surprising amount of hacking it to IE can be automated using things like http://dean.edwards.name/IE7/ (IE7) and other free tools.

    YMMV.

  7. Article has an interesting conclusion on Gamers, Upgrade your Systems · · Score: 3, Interesting

Actually, the article has a suprising (at least for me) conclusion: strategy / RPG games may benifit by upgrading your video card (they're really starting to take advantage of that stuff) whereas first person shooters require more CPU (due to increased AI). The FPS games used were Battlefield 1942 and Ghost Recon.

This is fairly contrary to what I've heard in the past, which was always the opposite.

  8. Another Black Friday definition on Retailers Swing DMCA To Stop "Black Friday" Sale Info · · Score: 1

Black Friday may be named because it puts retailers 'in the black' but if, like me, you'll be at work that day supporting cash register software, Black Friday has a whole different meaning. In context of panicked store managers trying to make sure that the 400,000 price changes came through last night to every register while the server struggles under the load of cashiers pounding out promotion after promotion, Black Friday sounds a whole lot more like the Black Plague.

    Holiday, my butt.

  9. Dive Into Accessibility on Constructing Accessible Web Sites · · Score: 3, Informative

Mark Pilgrim has a wonderful site at http://diveintoaccessibility.org/

It's set up as a 30-day transformation process, with each day containing a new change. He includes has a few example characters, each with their own unique set of disabilities and/or web-browsing choices, and he explains how each of these people would benefit from said changes.

  10. Who needs blacktop when we have grass? on Self-Cleaning Glass · · Score: 1

Excellent! Now we can plant grass without those pesky side effects like helping prevent flash-flooding of urban areas. No longer do we have to cover the earth with concrete, now plants can have equally harmful properties.

  11. make your flash optional on Online Marketing for an Indie Band? · · Score: 1

I can't see flash. I can't see your website. I like indie music. I don't use P2P networks, so I'll never hear you.

That'd be a first good step: make yourself accessible first, all purty-like second. Even a link that said, "crappy, text only version of the website here" would be fine.

The previous poster who mentioned student run radio is correct: there are a lot of college radios stations (some web enabled some not) and most of them have indie kids running the rigs. If your stuff is good, getting the sounds to them is a excellent first step.

In most larger cities there are also radio stations that bill themselves as playing "alternative" music, and they often play some indie music late at night. Worth a shot.

Good luck. Good music is tough to find, help give us more!

  12. A.Gods was great, but Neverwhere?!? on Gaiman's American Gods Wins Hugo · · Score: 4, Insightful

I've been a fan of Gaiman for a few years, and can remember being excited at finding Neverwhere ("a whole novel!") a few years back. But it just wasn't that good. The whole thing felt a little flat, and while it did seem to want to be a bit like Alice in Wonderland, it just didn't come close. See Coraline for a better attempt.

American Gods, on the other hand, was a fabulous book. Lots of Gaimanesque details and twists, but felt like it hung together much better. Anyhow, differences of opinion I suppose.

Congrats to Gaiman. It is well deserved.

Sure AllTheWeb may have more links, but when I did a search on my name, I found several hits on pages that haven't existed for many moons. Every search engine has this problem, but Google has long since flushed those pages. And in the time between the page vanishing and Google noticing, they've got it cached. :)

Of course, as has been mentioned a few times above, competition is a Good Thing (TM).

  17. Alas, it really wasn't as good as I'd hoped on Review: Spiderman · · Score: 1
The dialog just wasn't up to snuff. The special effects are great, the nods to classic comic book days kept me smiling, but the dialog removed any sense of caring about these people. It was tough to tell if they edited too much out, or if it was just badly written but I came out of the theatre feeling let down.

Now part of this was that I went in to the theatre expecting a very good movie. Don't get me wrong, parts of it were. I'd recommend checking it out, and while I don't plan to see it again, if I do I'll enjoy it. Just don't go in with your hopes up too high.

On the other hand, the preview for The Hulk got my heart racing... (guess I'm just a sucker)

Tunnels & Trolls was the first RPG game I ever bought, and through the next 12 years of playing was always one of my favorites. I can still remember coming back to my dorm and trying to convince my non-CS friends how stinking cool this class was. :)
Anyhow, I wondered why I suddenly started getting e-mail about my 1-bit ALU project (we all linked to each other's projects). Heh, an untimely Slashdot post. Go figure. Good way to start a Wednesday...

  22. def: going gargoyle on Wearable PCs Under Linux · · Score: 1

"going gargoyle" means putting as many electronic toys upon your body as possible. I know the term was used in Snow Crash, but does anyone know where it originated from? In S.C.(if memory serves me) a guy hooks himself up so that everything he observes (not just sees) gets uploaded. He's called a "gargoyle."
