"yes. there's a difference between Apple "integrating" things and Microsoft "just locking everyone else out"."
Apples entire business plan revolves around the concept of locking everyone else out. Remember the clone wars, and how about the iPod/iTMS with proprietary DRM that Apple won't license.
"Yeah, we are back to the assumption that Corporate America likes to make that every single song, movie or piece of software would have been legally purchased if they had not been illegally downloaded. Obviously that is false, but it makes the "losses sufferred" sound really impressive."
Yes, Corporate America also has this outrageous notion of quantifying shoplifting losses at their retail price, making the assumption that shoplifters would actually have bought the stuff if they couldn't steal it.
In practice it would be difficult to get 1Gb/s in 100MHz of bandwidth. You need extremely good linearity in your link to get such a large constellation. To beat the noise figure problem you need either short distances or high transmit power. 1Gb/s links are being researched usning 60GHz carriers and a lot more bandwidth. 802.16 will more likely be used for 4G when low power solutions become available on the market.
Wireless internet is not a necessary service. Why not have the govt. set up free restaurants and movie theaters while we're at it, to take your analogy to the next step. Free daycare and free parking sound good too. How about free electricity and fuel. I need those more than WiFi access.
No, what PA wants to do is give out a free service, and stick you with the "progressive" tax for that bill. This is Communism, and is not in line with the principles under which the US was founded.
Great idea. Lets put RFID tags on prescription medication that people use to help them with paranoia. Aren't these people going to be the most paranoid about the RFID technology allowing the govt., space aliens, etc. to track them?
What is there to contest? Bush won the vote, both popular and electoral. What you can't understand is why the (slight) majority of Americans don't agree with you, so you assume something must be wrong with the voting process.
Canada's prices are not going up because they are set by law. What happens if reimportation is allowed is that drug companies make less money, and therefore, there is less incentive to invest in companies pursuing drug research. The only way Canada pays more is if the govt. decides it is in their country's best interest.
There's no negotiation in Canada. They set prices by law. Your comparison to Canada is more like if everyone was on medicare, and if medicare refused to pay more than x amount. When the govt. is the only health care agent, they effectively employ everyone in the healthcare field. You accept their terms, or find a new profession.
It takes the concept of seeking out only what you want to here to a new level. No one wants facts, they just want to here what they already believe.

You can't fight big companies.

" How does Governor Ed Rendell spin this bill on behalf of his Pennsylvania constutents?"
Here's one more "essential" service your tax dollar won't be wasted on.

So if I shoplift Walmart and sell for half price, I'm a legitimate competitor to Walmart?

Democracy is tyranny of the majority. I hope now that Kerry lost, people will understand what this means.
It's really urban vs. rural. Check out county by county votes.
Apparently, there were a lot of ballot initiatives, and rather than deciding ahead of time, people spent 20 min voting trying to decide on the spot.
"The Federal Income Tax is illegal?"
There was no federal income tax until the early 20th century.
How much power does it burn per month compared with a TiVo?
" With 40gb/60gb, you could store quite a few compressed dvds on there. I want an iMovie!"
Go here then
"I wonder if you can hack it to do videos." Or you could buy a music player that actually does play video
Santa's elves better not make their own iPods, or there will be lawsuits.
"the first ship will be the VSS Enterprise"
Given that this is a commercial venture, I can't think of a better name.
"the first ship will be the VSS Enterprise"
Given it's a for-profit commercial venture, what better name for the ship than Enterprise.
says it all

"But then again, it's all free in Canada - I spend $800 a year to have the right to any emergency or critical care in Canada. That's not too bad IMO."
Nothing is free. Either doctors are paying by accepting lower salaries, or taxpayers or paying more, or both.
