  1. Credit card on Nintendo Puts a Bedtime On Wii U Content In Europe · · Score: 1

One would think that if you're buying with a credit card (in your own name) that there's some age validation there.
I'd expect there's some weird regulations going on there. I doubt most companies want to prevent you from giving them money (unless they're the RIAA/MPAA in which case control > money)

  3. Indeed on Stay Home When You're Sick! · · Score: 1

Most of the types of sick days I've had are things like these.
If you're coughing up a lung and spreading germs everywhere, stay the hell home (and sleep).

But there are lots of other things that make going to work not cool but doing work OK.

Those with allergies aren't contagious, but may have some fairly terrible symptoms (which often results in both sleep loss and waking discomfort). Sometimes the solution is to wake up, take a benedryl, and hit the sack for a few more hours until it takes affect and the symptoms abate.

As mentioned by the parent, being in close proximity to a toilet is also usually a good reason to stay home.

I've had a few times where I've called in and either worked remote or come in late, but still managed to get plenty of work done. Sometimes taking a whole day off is worse, because then you've got even more work waiting for you at the office.

  4. Re:Sorry to be frank but what did he think on Hit Game Makes £52 In First Week On Windows RT · · Score: 1

not the garbage that gets shoved out on iOS

There are plenty of crappy games on windows, but many tend to have a bigger advertising budget. Sometimes this allows them to make a bunch of sales before people catch on and they end up in the bargain bin.

Tablets/phones do allow for more low-budget games, and the "market" or "store" apps tend to allow for more visibility of the games-list in general. However, I've played GLWB (predecessor to GBWG) and it's very enjoyable, and the series can hardly be qualified as garbage.

That said... I hardly know *anyone* who has a modern windows mobile device. Those I do know are mainly office types and not gamers. Perhaps the market will expand, but at the moment it seems that MS is a bit late to the show. They need apps to attract buyers/users, but producers need a solid base of user in order to make money off their apps.

  11. Horsepower vs selection on Hackers Discover Wii U's Processor Design and Clock Speed · · Score: 1

Some games require more horsepower, especially moving forward in time.
Having insufficient horsepower means less selection, which means the console is a bit less useful (and IMHO less fun).

Nintendo releases a lot of fun games, but traditionally a lot of fun non-Nintendo games haven't been available on their consoles due to lack of horsepower or related issues. Already since WiiU has come out, a bunch of games that have been available on other consoles have been added to the catalogue.

  12. Wiimote on Hackers Discover Wii U's Processor Design and Clock Speed · · Score: 1

    Precision yes, speed not necessarily.

A shooter game with a wii-style remote in a guntroller on a 50" TV may actually do quite well compared to a mouse on a 21" or less computer screen. While the wiimote itself might be less accurate in many cases, it may also be a faster "twitch" response (and in many cases, more fun IMHO).

Now if you talk about RTS, I have yet to see any console controller that does well for these (although perhaps the touch-screen may prove useful).

  13. Screwdriver on Ask Slashdot: Server Room Toolbox? · · Score: 1

    Of note for the screwdriver:

Having a "ratcheting" variety is quiet helpful for when you need to get into tight spaces and for saving wrist-strain in some cases.
Extra-long bits are also quite nice to have
I'd also keep around a few extra pieces of rackmount stuff. It seems you can never find proper rackmount screws when you need them.

Oh, and try to keep all your bits the same. It's usually not quite so much an issue in a DC, but if nothing's more of a PITA than a piece of equipment where you have 4 different types of bolt/screw bits and keep having to cycle through screwdrivers.

Well, it would most likely leave the law in a similar place to the U.S.
The RCMP *shouldn't* be getting involved in non-criminal suits. You won't be going to jail, but that doesn't exempt you from civil suits.
If the music companies can get your contact info to offer a "pre-settlement" or otherwise take you to civil court, that's probably where it's going to go. If you can be sued for several hundred G's, or just bankrupted with lawyer fees then it's nearly as ruinous as serving a short stint in a cell.

It does say that a recent court decision forces ISP's to reveal subscriber identities. I'm not sure which decision that is, but it would sure be nice if there were a link to it somewhere.

I do have some faith that the Canadian court system is a bit more sane in regards to penalties, but who wants to go to court?

Still, if a movie is worth seeing I usually prefer the theatre/Netflix anyhow, and any music I've downloaded online has come from Artists self-promoting for free (and good artists get more from me by donation than they'd ever get if I bought through a label) and ocassionally from iTunes.

  17. Fun any funny games on Gameplay: the Missing Ingredient In Most Games · · Score: 1

I remember the fun I used to have with a lot of old games, where the developers weren't afraid to mix it up a bit and throw in some targeted humour.
Nowadays, most games are a bit too general, and a bit too PR. They're often stodgy and inventive.

The "Mass Effect" series, despite some shortcomings and issues with the ending, was worth my money. The gameplay was engaging without too much grind, and the dialog was great with quips from Joker etc. It reminded me a lot of the "good ol' days" with games like Space Quest et al, but with more action.

Other games can be nice to look at, but there's often little that makes them stand out other than the shiny factor. Games often become fronts for "item stores" or other such things.

With ME4 upcoming and the initial trilogy story-arc ending (apparently you don't play as Sheppard), I'm hoping that the devs will find a happy medium between bringing a bit more closure to the ending of ME3 and not dragging into sequelitis.

Remakes on very old games may come along nicely, where a new paint job but tried-and-true gameplay may win out. The trend towards 3d games may help this as model packs etc can be updated for a minimal cost.

  18. New music on Researchers Find Megaupload Shutdown Hurt Box Office Revenues · · Score: 1

There's always a good portion of music that's crap. Nowadays with online libraries, you get to see more music in general so it's somewhat of a percentage game.
The biggest change though is what's essentially the death of the single. Not many people are going to plop down $10+ for a single song, or $10-20 for an album which only has one or two decent songs.
iTunes etc allow you to by single songs at a reasonable price without the need for "singles" albums or crappy filler.

My music purchases are probably up with the advent of digital online music, but purchases of physical media is down. If possible, I buy from the artist as directly as possible, or otherwise from iTunes/amazon/etc.

With the advent of things like the piratebay actively doing promos, and the move away from Big Labels' control of the distribution or even promotional channels channels in general, there's a fundamental shift in music.

Hopefully in the future this means that - while an artist might not be able to sell $10million worth of an album - they will be able to sell a slightly lower volume for a slightly higher cut (or at least a less draconian contract).

  19. Android ROM's on Researchers Find Megaupload Shutdown Hurt Box Office Revenues · · Score: 1

I recently had to fix/update a Galaxy S2 from Korea (to allow it to work in Canada). There are plenty of ROM's for english-speaking countries, but finding one that matched the Korean model (and not being able to read Korean well myself) was damn hard.

The annoying part is that when I finally did run across some older posts with ROM's (which are perfectly legal, mind you) for the damn thing, clicking through the link brought me MegaUpload and the "this domain has been seized" warning.

So there's a legitimate use that was killed in the "war on piracy." I'm sure there are plenty of others, as MU was a great+convenient way for sharing patching and other large files

For my personal stuff, which includes looking up movies, web browsing, playing games, etc etc, I prefer my SG2.

A bit part of the problem isn't that BB's aren't cool, it's that the separation between "work" and "personal" devices is becoming a lot thinner. What are the business advantages of an iPhone/Android over a blackberry?
