  1. Hacking for fun on A Sony Camera Running Linux · · Score: 1

I wonder what image manipulation software (if any) exists on the camera. If it was easily hackable, I could have a lot of fun doing things like a "randomly add elvis/JFK/ghosts in the background" easter-eggs :-)

  2. Bumper sticker on Visitors To US Now Required To Register Online · · Score: 1

My grandparents had an amusing bumper-sticker that more or less summarized this:

"I love my country. It's the government I'm afraid of."

  3. Guitar-related games on Guitar Hero III the First Game to $1 Billion In Sales · · Score: 1

I remember awhile back there was a guitar game coming that was set to use a real guitar (pitch/tone matching?) rather than a plastic "air guitar." I'm wondering when that will come out, and how it will compare to Guitar Hero or Rock Band sales-wise. I've heard before that being able to play the drums in RB expert mode is nearly the same as being able to do so with the real thing, and it would be cool to see a game that sells well while at the same time being educational and entertaining.

  4. Automation for what? on Obama Proposes Digital Health Records · · Score: 1

It depends on what you're trying to do. If you're trying to increase convenience/efficiency of something, then going "digital" may increase employment. If you're trying to cut back on redundant steps (which may or may not go with the above), it may cut jobs as well.

It seems to me that companies would need humans to interact with this system. They'll probably need people to run their own systems too. So you might gain some "expert in interfacing with gov't system X" types in favor of losing some "expert in running our system Y" types.

  5. Getting everything on Obama Proposes Digital Health Records · · Score: 1

breaking into a system becomes much more attractive when you can get everything in one place

It depends on where things were in the first place. It seems to me that with all the different providers/methods, you're still going to have hundreds of thousands or more important records in a given place, and without a strict set of security standards the individual companies may be less secure.

Of course, having a strict security definition and actually having people *use* it are two different things anyhow.

  6. Standard, but flexible on Obama Proposes Digital Health Records · · Score: 1

Seems to me that there's a standard, but it only mandates certain parts, and the rest is all done in different ways by different carriers...

  7. Keylogger on Trojan Found At Torrent Sites Insists "Downloading Is Wrong" · · Score: 1

Just to clarify,a keylogger is different from a keygen. The former being used to record what keys are being pressed on a user's keyboard, etc, while the keygen creates serial #'s etc for various software.

  8. Doesn't work in IT on Abused IT Workers Ready To Quit · · Score: 4, Interesting

The issue in IT, at least from my experience, is not about missing deadlines or other planning, it's about work that springs up suddenly or constantly. These tend to be because of many factors:

    a) Budget: A lot of small or mid-sized companies can't afford a huge amount of redundancy. If a server goes down, there's not a drop-in replacement for it. If you're smart there are backups, but one still has to get them up and running.

    b) Time=Money: a little different from (a) Time is money. In environments that require near 24/7 uptime, downtime means money lost, which means that you're required to get things up and running ASAP, whether it's 3:00pm or 3:00am. Often again going with small-mid businesses, you may be able to afford all the expensive resources to keep things up (this includes redundant staff)

    c) Other People: Plan all you want, but when your development team's latest project breaks a server at 1:00am, or marketing needs a last minute push, or a million other things... and you're the only one who can update or fix a live server... you're going to get a call.

It's funny though, because my previous job in a union shop with strict hours was irritating in the opposite way. I wasn't even *allowed* to work overtime except with large amounts of paperwork, so that means cramming what you would normally do "after hours" in a rather open schedule in a small and very stressful "window"

  9. Re:Cash on Blu-ray Update Sent To User Via Credit Card Records · · Score: 1

Much as I hate the sue-happy mentality that often pervades in society, in cases such as this it seems that it would be the most appropriate measure to send the message that such behavior on behalf of the police and store owners is not acceptable.

  10. Microwaves on Hippies Say WiFi Network Is Harming Their Chakras · · Score: 1

Hmmm. I wonder if they could build a device that captures there microwaves, focuses them, and slow-cooks some pot-brownies or something of the like. If I build it in a pyramid shape I bet I now know who my target audience would be...

  11. Re:Who is paying for my electricity, anyways? on New Energy Efficiency Rules For TVs Sold In California · · Score: 1

And you pay for space in landfills, etc, but there's only so much room there. Electricity, too, is a finite resource in a given area at a given time, so unless you're powering your devices via your own Solar/wind/etc source then excessive consumption not only costs you more, it affects the overall grid as well.

  12. Re:How about cable and sat boxes that can power do on New Energy Efficiency Rules For TVs Sold In California · · Score: 1

I've seen devices that "know" when an RCA/S-video/etc cable is plugged in. I'm guessing this might be adaptable to whether the device on the other end is on as well, depending on whether there is any noticeable change in power usage?

  13. Re:Next Edict... on All of Vietnam's Government Computers To Use Linux, By Fiat · · Score: 1

I'd be happy if it would open the excel sheets my HR department has and print the damn things properly. I can't figure out why (all the paper/margin settings are correct) but it always prints the entire document in a 1.5"x1" space...

  14. "Exported" on $30B IT Stimulus Will Create Almost 1 Million Jobs · · Score: 1

    unless it's been exported overseas.

This is actually a good point. Is there anything to ensure that this clause won't simply be used to foreign labor VS creating (reasonable wage) domestic jobs? I hardly think it would help the economy as much or create a lot of local employment opportunities if it were used for more outsourcing...

  15. What games on The Best Gaming PC Money Can Buy · · Score: 2, Interesting

Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but I haven't seen a lot of "heavy" new PC games that would require an "ultimate gaming rig" these days.

That's not to say that some good games/additions/etc haven't come out or aren't on the boiler, but what's out-or-coming that would require or make use of a souped-up gaming rig VS just a decent machine (with a decent graphics card)?

In that case, how about an airtight container in the freezer?

  18. Re:How to store teeth today? on Tooth Regeneration Coming Soon · · Score: 1

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled, I stuck them in a little tube with some rubbing alcohol. They lasted for about a year before somebody broke the tube on me, but they looked OK at that point. Maybe a regular preservative alcohol would work OK?

  19. Wisdom teeth on Tooth Regeneration Coming Soon · · Score: 1

Well, apparently my buddy had all four wisdom teeth removed... twice. His also came back once.

Too bad for me though, I've had all four of mine pulled because they were coming out crooked, and thus far no regrowth so I'm probably SOL stem-cell wise.

I've heard that in Canada, vets can make more money as well, as there are less restrictions on them than on human doctors (which are funded under gov't medicare).

I actually have a few friends which work as vets or vet assistants. The job tends to mix the borders between "oooh, cute and cuddly fuzzies" with "oooo, fluid-leaking ripped-up and mangled barely-alive animal."

A friend of mine recently saved a small rodent from heart failure, so they really do work will animals of all types, sizes, and shapes as well. However there are often "specialist" vets that deal primarily with large animals/livestock, etc, too. It's always seemed like an interesting career path to me.
