A large portion of criminals are dumb. For the ones that aren't and still get caught, sometimes it's due to clever police-work, etc, but oft-times just plain bad luck plays a factor.
There are trolls, and then there are shit-disturbers. The trolls are there to get a reaction. The SD's are there to cause trouble. In the end, many of their methods are the same, but many of the trolls have somewhat better spelling/grammar.
An example of an SD would be many of the posters on the recent "shooting videos", who come online and say that we need to "declare war on all the cops, shoot them first." To most people, a war of escalation obviously isn't going to end well, but these people come spewing hate and bile that they seem to actually believe it.
One of the problems seems to be that if you want to grow somewhere that has an extended growing season (a.k.a lots of hot sun year-round), it's probably going to be in an area that is rather arid without a lot of irrigation.
One thing I look at is fix-it boards. For example, I was recently looking for a washer-dryer. A certain company had a *LOT* of people asking on fix-it boards how to replace the element on the dryer, and noting that it died fairly early on or repeatedly.
Try googling "[product] how to replace" or "[product] how to fix" and see what people are commonly asking about. Maybe it's a simple thing and even if it breaks now and then you don't care, but it gives you an idea of what commonly breaks down. Note that this may be due to the part being fragile/defective, a common part that needs replacement in that type of item, or a lot of people being dumb able handling that particular part, so some filtering on your part would be needed.
I didn't say I agree with it, I was just stating the mentality behind it. Personally, I find it retarded that various ports of SINGLE-PLAYER, previously DRM-FREE games - e.g. Final Fantasy series etc - have to do a phone-home check before you can run them on an Android/iDevice.
The dumbest part is that one of the first thing that happens when a pirate version of the game comes out is that all the stupid DRM shit is stripped off anyways, giving the pirates a better copy than those that legitimately purchased it.
In the cases of some PC games, the DRM has been known to make the game crash, or even break systems. I seem to recall that there were various cases of Starforce/SecuROM breaking optical drives, for example.
It's not "you haven't updated it in awhile", it's "you took away a core component required for it to [fully] function"
In various cases - after less than two years - they took the servers that allowed multi-player offline. In the "good ol' days", this would have been OK, because people were still capable of hosting their own servers. These days, you can only play on "official" servers (which are now offline), so you've either lost the ability to play a fairly key component of the game, or in some cases can't play at all.
The ask is that you be allowed to either a) Modify the game to play on non-official multiplayer servers (also reverse-engineer things to be able to host your own server)
Or, in cases where the game doesn't work at all because it requires an authentication server which no longer exists b) Modify the game to remove the shitty DRM which doesn't allow play without authentication
The DRM is getting bad. You're even online-authentication it on games that are pretty much intended for single-play (simcity) or ports of games which are only single-player (Final Fantasy series on iPad/Android). If you have no internet connection, or the master servers are down, the game will refuse to even launch
No, but there's plenty of incentive to offer lower pay and say "sorry, we don't negotiate, take it or leave it" (and then perhaps when they don't take it, farm the job off to a TFW or H1-B, etc).
Also, what some people might call "negotiation", others might call "showcasing."
Yes, you're offering $30/h for this position which requires X, but I've been doing X longer than your average candidate and also do Y and Z which offer value to your company (which is worth something).
No shit. Women like Pao really shit upon their gender as a whole. Some of the best PM's and manager's I've had have *been* women, with one of the specific skills they seem to excel at being negotiation (for resources, with vendors, with suppliers, whatever).
Men might be a bit more "aggressive" in some lines of work, but being aggressive alone doesn't make one a good negotiator.
Saying women can't negotiate (due to some bullshit excuse like "they're socialized not to") craps upon all women, making them sound like meek little mice in the face of the other gender.
Hmmmm. One one hand: separatists... on the other: Poutine (and Montreal in general is quite friendly). To be fair, the separatists aren't much of a bother to anybody but the rest of us Canadians, so I'm not sure whom to apologize for there.
I do apologize for Adams, Dionne, and Bieber though.
My personal favourite (to hate) is "region encoding" on DVD's/BD's Whomever thought of that deserved to be chained to a wall and have one optical discs launched at his/her genitalia for every movie that had that crap installed.
Because OBVIOUSLY, if you are jail-broken, it must be to cheat at their stupid games
No, it's more that if you have a jail-broken device, you may be using an illegitimate/copied version of the software (or movie, or whatever). Getting paid apps for "free" was actually one of the big reasons for the popularity of jailbreaks on early iPhones.
Because 2% is still lower than 17%, and some countries will still be happy to take your business residence for tax purposes at that rate. There isn't a benefit to (overly) high taxes, but there is a certain point where they're too low to be sustainable. half of 17% is better than none of 30%, but that only works when nobody is paying 30%...
The thing is, corporations shouldn't be allowed to run afoul of the law and screw their customers over, only to say "oops, we'll fix that" when they're finally called to task. That encourages them to screw us over this with no penalties other than to cease, but the damage is already done.
How about Bell cuts a nice big cheque back to any customers affected by this, AND stops.
Yes, the law be equitable only in this situation:
You are a prostitute, and are heterosexual. Somebody wishes to engage your services. You say no, because you don't swing that way...
Otherwise, frankly, what happens in my or anyone else's bedroom is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS, because it doesn't involve you. Also, if your religion regards their relationship as a sin, I suggest you stop eating shellfish, working on a Sunday, and any gazillion things that are all old testament and have nothing to do with being "Christian" (the religion that supposedly follows a guy who basically preached love and acceptance, ya know).
How about, rather than an always-on camera, one that can be activated by certain flight crew members in the event of an emergency. It might not help if terrorists have already seized a plane, etc, but if somebody catches on before everyone is taken down then at least there will be a visual record of what happened.
You'd think that was true - and it was for awhile - but it isn't now. Many of the eTailers in Canada have pricing that's pretty close to the box stores when you consider shipping, but then you're getting an item that's sight-unseen and the hassle of possible returns. U.S. eTailers had better prices, but international shipping, - as well as the bend-me-over brokerage fees that UPS/Fed-Ex charge - dramatically raises the price of any cross-border online shopping. With the Canadian dollar in the shitter, that extra %20 makes it even worse.
So, unless you're ordering something from China (that you're willing to wait longer for, though pay much less for many things), there's no bargain there.
Where Future Shop f**ked up was the have box locations but stock-wise they're pretty much an online-store. Their video selection locally was pitiful, and everything was "if you'd like, you can order online and have it shipped." That does save you the shipping, but levels the playing field for Amazon-et-al dramatically in terms of wait-time etc I tried them for some computer stuff, and even online their selection was pretty bad. I mean, if you're going to have an online store... why not increase your selection a bit?!
Most of the people I see with those have jobs related to the Alberta oil-sands. Watch those disappear quickly now that the bottom is dropping out of that market.
Would that same attorney work for free to help them out when they did quit or move on to a new job? It's not necessarily just the contract that can be costly, but the court time/costs in fighting it.
Yes, but that still doesn't cover a lot of places. Here: City of 100k, 400km (248mi) from the nearest 1,000,000+ city, My house: 8km (~5mi) from city center Bus service: 7:00am->9:00pm hourly. Weekend service ends sooner. Some holidays with no service. Uptown (where much of the shopping is) requires a transfer in town.
Hardly a McMansion, and not far from city center, but also no way to get by without a car when you work late/early hours, are on-call, and/or don't otherwise want to walk through thick snow in the winter.
There *IS* a corner-store in my neighbourhood. If I just need a loaf of bread and some tomatoes I happily get some exercise and walk... but for anything more than that - frankly - you need a car.
(yes, it would be nice to have better bus service, but no luck with that thus far, and sometimes we're lucky if they clear our streets properly during a heavy snow let alone bike lanes).
Even in bigger cities, weather is sometimes restrictive for travelling by vehicle, let alone by bike or on foot. Further east you're lucky if you can get out of your house in some places.

So how is it then when "Target Canada" or other such companies go bankrupt, that "Target USA" isn't liable for all the debts they left behind?

I think this is a pretty good example of UK cops keeping a suspect under control without letting things get out-of-hand.
In the USA (and possibly Canada) the guy may have ended up with a beating if not a tazing and/or bullet-holes.
Note that while they do point a tazer at the guy, they manage to take him down without harm. Heck, an off-duty cop even tells them to let up a bit.
I'm also fairly sure that planting the taser on the "suspect" after you've pumped him full of bullets would be considered a no-no...
In many places, crimes against a police officer are tried more harshly than against regular citizens
I think it's more than fair that crimes committed by police officers - who hold a position of trust - also come with stronger consequences.
It's both.
Brutality is when an officer beats or kills somebody without cause.
Corruption is when the system (rest of the police, courts, etc) covers for him/her.
It's not "you haven't updated it in awhile", it's "you took away a core component required for it to [fully] function"
